Ah, 2 seater.

Makes a nice weekend toy but from everything I've heard... Kinda expensive to keep maintained.

Is that the same one that keeps getting sold every couple of years after owners figure out the true cost of Soviet maintenance in a free market economy?

I read an article about how one was bought as a personal jet by the CEO of an adversary air training company.  Didn't have a radar, wouldn't work in adversary roles, was a pain to land at most civilian airports due to noise, etc.  Wouldn't surprise me if he's selling it again, because nobody worth training against uses MiGs these days.

While the MiG-29 would be awesome to own as a private citizen where you don't have to worry about facing enemy fighter jets....

They are really crappy fighters. Their one strong point is their fast acceleration from take off. They lose on just about everything else.

Looks pretty cool.

But their combat record is not all that good. Even when going up against Su27s.

He just bought an entire Hawaiian island instead.

Wasn't planning to, but the way things have been going...

I suppose it would be less mortifying than going into battle in a light experimental aircraft armed with 6 M16s strung together like Rawles wrote about in Patriots.

Now, where does one get still effective Soviet air to air weaponry? Croatian surplus?

"This is the story of how one Shmoo took on the entire USAF in a surplus Mig29."

Nearly the entire fleet of surplus jets is for sale at any time. Very few are nearly affordable to own and operate.  Magisters,  Saitas, L-29`s, and maybe one or two others.

I was wondering whether there are airworthy Vampires or Goblins flying a couple of days past.  There were several through the 90`s.

There is at least one Dehavilland Vampire still flying. I've seen it race at Reno.

When they can get the thing off the ground. Suckers fast but its significantly less reliable than an L39. Makes for an interesting link between the WW2 piston engine Warbirds and the jet racers.

Not a recent picture, it's been repainted black with Swiss livery since this was taken.

Russian pilots flew against each other in the skies over Eritrea and Ethiopia in MiG-29s and Sukhoi 27s in the late 90s. That’s some Area 88-type mercenary stuff, right there.

Now that's something they could make a movie out of.

Might not even be all that expensive. Even if they omitted CGI.

But since all action movie protagonists are supposed to be female nowadays. And there's probably some very not politically correct aspects to the story it will probably never happen.

The Toyota War between Libya and Chad would also make for an interesting story, I think.

I understand that at the end of the Cold War the Russians had kept most of their old aircraft and tanks in a fairly decent (at least by Russian standards) state of repair.

Had the Cold War gone hot in the 80s. Even if the regular Russian military had been obliterated they would have had significant equipment reserves to fall back on.

The image of F15 pilots facing a 'Zerg Rush' of Mig 17s with inexperienced pilots comes to mind.

Of course after the Union fell all that hardware was just left to rust. Or obviously a lot of it wound up in various wars all over the third world. Not cheap to maintain most military grade equipment.

Can you even source parts for them resonably and reliably?

Best bet would be to steal a aircraft mechanic from their military and pay him a good salary to be your personal mechanic.  I'm sure $100K a year would do it

A local business owner here in SC did exactly that. He imported a MiG 19, if memory serves, as well as a pilot to train him and a maintainer.

I sat in a single-seat version here in CONUS.  All the instrumentation was what looked like 1970s-era analogue.

Surely, the Russians have upgraded / digitalized / improved their fleet of MiG-29s but who knows?

As far as maintenance costs, I've read that the Soviets fielded engines that were capable of fewer operating hours (compared to US jet engines) before needing to be sent off to depot for overhaul.  For a private entity not supported by tax revenue, that would be expensive IOT maintain any sort of airworthiness.
