Can we at least all agree that the All-American cartridge is not metric?

45acp all the way.
Think of the 1911, the Thompson and the grease gun, three of the most iconic weapons in history, and distinctly American. Even non-gun types recognise them. And the 45 Colt, the famous six-shooters of the cowboy age. There's even a malt liquor called the Colt 45! |

30.06
There are other "all american"cartridges but the 30.06 is (imho) the foremost of them all. |

I'm throwin' in on the 30-30. I know that there are sexier cartridges out there (The 30-06 and 45-70 fer example) but, as others have already mentioned,
the 30-30 is just about as "Ubiquitous" as it gets in American long-arms for the last 100+ years. |

.30-30 Has over a decade of use over the .30-06, and the Winchester 94 was/is the best-selling centerfire rifle in the US. That is not even taking in account Marlins, Savages, Remingtons, and other .30-30 rifles. Its now considered nothing more than a outdated cartridge, but it still still take anything in North America like it did over 100 years ago. Your entire argument assumes that use and practicality for hunting should be the major determinant. I would counter that by saying no cartridge that was not a service round can possibly be in the running. I would then posit that the 30.06 leads the pack for both its military and civilian roles, at a critical juncture in the formation of our national identity. You have made a valid, well-thought point to counter my argument. I commend you Sir. |

The problem with calling the 30-06 the All American cartridge is it was originally the 30-03 with a 220 gr round nose bullet. The .mil found out about the German's spitzer style bullet and made the 30-06 with a German based 150 gr spitzer.
There are other cartridges that are more All American. |
