.30-30
Has over a decade of use over the .30-06, and the Winchester 94 was/is the best-selling centerfire rifle in the US. That is not even taking in account Marlins, Savages, Remingtons, and other .30-30 rifles. Its now considered nothing more than a outdated cartridge, but it still still take anything in North America like it did over 100 years ago. |

.44 Magnum
Properly used it will take the fingerprints clean off. |

30-06 Springfield
.45 ACP 45-70 Govt 30-40 Krag 6mm Lee Navy How crazy you wanna get? |

If there can be only one then .30-06 is "the" All American cartridge. Others that are All American:
.45 ACP (next closest IMO) .38 Spl/.357 Mag 30-30 22lr .44 Mag .45-70 |

In this order: 1. 30-06 2. 30-30 3. .45 Hard to argue with that. Yup! |

30-06 was the first thing that came to mind.
30-30 would also be a good candidate. Americans prefer rifles. No pistol cartridge even crossed my mind. |

Your entire argument assumes that use and practicality for hunting should be the major determinant. I would counter that by saying no cartridge that was not a service round can possibly be in the running. I would then posit that the 30.06 leads the pack for both its military and civilian roles, at a critical juncture in the formation of our national identity. |

In reality it is the 30-30. It has been around since 1894 in commercial form.
The millionth Model 1894 30-30 was given to President Calvin Coolidge in 1927 if that tells you anything. On arfcom it will be common military calibers over the years. |

I was going to say 30-06.
But since everyone else has said that I will say 6mm airsoft. |

It's a toss up. I'll say 30-06 because everyone else is, though my first thought was .45ACP because 1911 and .45ACP are synonymous with classic American firearms.

.22lr - probably more of this shot every year in the U.S. than all other cartridges combined.
That said, there's something "All American" about the 30-06. |
