The issue here as I see it - is if you know you are going to get beat to death, would you “resist”? Why, at this point, would anyone in Memphis not resist? Actions of those cops escalated this thing rapidly. As some have pointed out - this almost looked personal. Personal actions build or destroy trust, and that trust is shattered. Grain of salt - This is likely the media frenzy slowburn that is designed to inch us closer to nationalizing the police. |

It was odd to me the body cam from the initial cop who made first contact was conspicuously absent? Did he have a camera? Was it turned on? What led up to them pulling him out of the car? All we got was a cop that showed up after the guy was out of the car. Not trying to justify anything but it is a big part of the incident that is missing. With how the cops and media work it certainly feels like it is narrative crafting by leaving it out. That being said homeboys were more focused on tazing/pepper spraying him and then throwing a beat down on him more than they were concerned with cuffing and subduing the suspect. |

They already have to abide by reasonable use of force guidelines. The only difference is that police have a duty to arrest which average joes do not. As a result of that there is some extra leeway, but police cannot resort to lethal force (which they did here) when someone is passively resisting them to effect arrest. |
