When I was running my Jody game, the songs would be more sexy. Maybe more like The Yeastie Girls or Lords of Acid.

But yeah, the original song might be good for land grabbing.

Did you think you were going to inflame me with that post?

Yeah, the earlier stuff is weaker. There're some solid tracks in there, but I don't listen to those entire albums as much as SGR and onward.

(Best stuff from the first three albums? New Life, Nodisco, Just Can't Get Enough, Leave in Silence, Love in Itself, Everything Counts. Which is pretty much all of the singles from those albums. (Oh, and also from that era, there's Get the Balance Right, a single that is just excellent.)

Yeah, I'm the same way. I like all sorts of shit. Just tonight, we've bounced around playing Youtube Roulette, and we've listened to the Doobie Brothers, 3 Doors Down, Snoop Dogg, Louis Armstrong, Sammy, Dean, Frank, and Johnny (gotta post that one), and much other shit.

But I don't know shit about Depeche Mode.

Anyway, Heeeeeeere's Johnny! Betcha didn't know he could sing.

Most of their fan base in the 80s was trench coat wearing Darias, they were almost entirely underground in the US. They got a lot more popular in the 90s.

They were synth innovators and good music writers.  Most of their stuff would sound less femmy and anemic if played across guitars, etc.

Huge DM fan here. Already have their new album pre-ordered through Amazon and am eagerly awaiting the US tour dates.

Exciter is probably one of the worst albums to judge them from, OP. As stated, Violator is really good. I am also partial to Songs of Faith and Devotion.
Really, I love pretty much all of their albums, with the possible exception of A Broken Frame, which is the weakest - and they acknowledge as such. Exciter doesn't get as much playtime for me either, but more than ABF.

Depeche Mode
Tears For Fears
The Cure
The Smiths
The Human League
Morrissey
New Order
Pet Shop Boys
Eurythmics
Howard Jones
Thompson Twins
Echo and the Bunnymen
Simple Minds
Yaz
Erasure

And any number of others in that sphere of music, however my musical taste was more expansive than that.  Depche Mode got the most airplay on my Sony Walkman.

Banged my leftover HS girlfriend to "Enjoy the Silence" in my dorm room with the blacklight on  before her dad picked her up out front at the start of my freshmen year of college.

I'm a "fan".

Taxi service was appreciated daddio. Even better because it was a 4 hour drive round trip.
