Stabilizers, from the album Tyranny, still one of my faves, great band.

Another great song by them, that is appropriate today is the title track Tyranny.

Listen to the words carefully.

I can see you've got things well in hand
You seem to think this is your promised land
No parade without a tip of your hat
If the people cry -- you give them what they ask
Both good and bad -- and as the sky turns black
CHORUS:
What's a little tyranny to you?
When all you need to do -- is come to me
So what -- what's a little tyranny
Now the plan begins to take some form
I could swear you had a soul before
You're in command -- holding tight to your course
You close your hand and promise them much more
From behind your door -- they've heard it all before
CHORUS
Now it seems your luck is running down
A masquerade in pieces on the ground
The fear you've lost has suddenly been found
They've come for you -- go to your angry crowd
Hear them calling out loud
You're wearing a smile through the frown
CHORUS

I don't know exactly what the definition of a hit is but some of those bands have more than one song that I hear often.

Smithereens:
A Girl Like You
Blood and Roses
Only A Memory

Level 42:
Something About You
Lessons In Love

Howard Jones:
Things Can Only Get Better
No One Is To Blame
What Is Love?
Everlasting Love
New Song
Like To Get To Know You Well

These guys had a few minor hits with this one being the most popular. However they had one of the best albums of all time "The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus". Check it out.

When Led Zeppelin first came to America they were the opening act for Spirit on tour.

Boyce and Hart wrote a lot of hits but this was the only one I can remember that they recorded. Some of the hits by the Monkees were written by these guys.

Kind of stretching the limits of a "one hit wonder" due to the fact that the band is essentially The Talking Heads without David Byrne, but it is the only song that went anywhere out of this album as I recall after David Byrne too legal action.

A little dark synth / New wave. These guys should have been much bigger. They had the right sound at the right time. Echo and the Bunnymen

Don't know if they've been posted , but one of my faves, lots of talent, Siouxsie Sioux, with Siouxsie and the banshees.

One of the best songs of the 80s

Cities to Dust

Yeah, a little strange, but they were.

Bauhaus, with Peter Murphy on lead vocals.

And since it's related, and he's also a one hit wonder, sort of, Peter Murphy solo. He had a great voice.

These guys really had talent as well. Always loved this song, but I'm going to post a second one that will blow your mind if you listen and really think about the lyrics and what they mean. Very deep stuff.

World Party

This one is deep my brothers of the church of ARF, bow your heads and digest this scripture.

Here are the lyrics. Good stuff. Karl was a genius.

Many years ago
He
Looked out through a glassless window
All that he could see
Was Ba-bylon
Beautiful green fields
and dreams
and learned to measure the stars
but there was a worry in his heart

He said
How could it come to this?
We're really worried about living
How could it come to this?
Yeah we really wanna know about this

Is it like today?
Oh-oh-oh

Then there came a day, moved
Out cross the Mediterranean
Came to rest on isles and the Greek young men
And with their silver beards they laughed
At the unknown of the universe
They could just sit and guess God's name

Is it like today?
Oh-oh-oh

Then there followed days of kings, empires and revolutions
Blood just looks the same
When you open the veins
And sometimes it was faith, power or reason as the cornerstone
but the furrowed brow has never left his face

He said
How could it come to this?
We're really living in a landslide
How could it come to this?
Yeah we really wanna know about this

Is it like today?
Oh-oh-oh

Then there came a day
Man, packed up, flew off from the planet
He went to the moon, to the moon
To, to the moon, the moon
now he's out in space
Hey, fixing all the problems
He comes face to face with God

He say
How could it come to this
I'm really worried about my creation
How did it come to this
You're really killing me you know

It isn't just a day
Oh-oh-oh
Is it like today?
Eh-oh-oh
Is it like today?
Oh Bang!

I love this version. Some chick singing it but it's great. Sheryl Crow covered it but not as well.

This is beautiful. It gets really good in the second verse.

Making up for it? The Call had one other minor hit, that nobody probably remembers. This was their only top 20 song.

Michael Been's son did a tribute of the song.

eta - backstory of Robert Been of BRMC and this song.

Robert Levon Been (born August 22, 1978), previously known by the stage name Robert Turner, is an American indie rock bass guitarist, guitarist, and singer. He is currently a member of Los Angeles-based band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club[1] and was, for a time, a bass player in a band known as The Beggars, going under the name 'Robert Locke'. He is the son of Michael Been of The Call, and appeared as bassist on his father's 1994 solo album, On the Verge of a Nervous Breakthrough.

His father suffered a fatal heart attack in 2010 while working as a sound engineer during the Pukkelpop festival in Belgium, where BRMC were appearing. Robert Been used the pseudonym 'Robert Turner' on Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's first two records, in an attempt not to be linked to his father. He later dropped this identity when promoting their third album, "Howl". In 2013, BRMC covered his father's song 'Let The Day Begin' on their album Specter at The Feast. Later that year, he appeared in two concerts with a reunited The Call, taking his father's place on bass and vocals

Hackett to Bits was pretty good, but it wasn't a patch on Steve Howe's Sketches in the Sun. That's some major fucking talent, right there. Playing rhythm on the low strings while playing leads on the high ones. Amazing guitarist.
