I've got a bunch of n gauge cars and a few engines left over from my chidhood.  I'm having the urge to build a simple layout for nostalgia sake.  A couple of quick questions for the n gauge nerds:

1.  I will buy new track -  I would like to use track with the molded trackbed, which did not exist when I was screwing around with this stuff.  What track do I probably want to use for ease of construction and aesthetics?

2.  What's a good hobby shop for pricing/obtaining what I need for the layout?

3.  Do my engines need any maintenance if they haven't been run in decades?

I used to read a neighbor's magazines and a switch yard with turntable always seemed like a cool layout. Kind of like Tetris or a sliding tile game putting different trains together

Look for lay-outs on wood doors. nice flat and you can glue foam directly to the surface. Kato brand track is what you're looking for.

Is N smaller than HO?  I used to have an O gauge that ran under the tree.  Brother has it now for his kids.

do those letters have a stand size meaning? is there an equivalent like model tank and planes, like 1/32 scale or 1/64 scale.

nscale.net is a great place to see what's new and get ideas. A 36"x80" hollow door can make a great first start. Kato unitrack is bombproof and is highly recommended.

Kato Unitrack is perfect for what you want to do.

Probably the best place for equipment is either eBay or Model Train Stuff.  Also there is a Nscale yahoo group for selling and trading that often has a lot of good deal.  I also have a bit of stuff for sale right now too depending on what you are looking for.

Your older equipment might be equipped with Rapido couplers which won't work with most newer equipment.  You should definitely clean your engines at least, but depending on age they might not run nearly as smooth as newer stuff.

Any pics of your stuff?

technically it's "n-scale", not n-gauge. if you're gonna be a foamer, be a technical one.

you can buy a ready-to-run layout, for your trains, from ebay or amazon. oil the bearings (lightly) and clean the wheels with some contact cleaner, you should be good to go.

I have a mess of HO but like my N better. It is hard to find up here though. No demand:(

If you want to spout technicalities, the track is N gauge, the accessories are N scale.

I started out HO when I was a kid but moved to N when I got older.  Liked being able to fit twice the stuff in the same amount of space.

I have never done any N-scale before.  Sometimes I think it would be fun because of the space issue I have but I really like HO and S scale the best because there are a lot of good building materials available and I like to scratch build and do more of a historical setting layout.

I just pulled out my Dad's 1947 Lionel train. He used to set it up around the tree when I was a kid. He had not run it for a few years before his death in 2012.

I just bought an N gauge set up for kicks and for the first time ever, set up my Dad's train for Christmas.

Thanks for all the replies.  I'm going to do a simple layout to get back into it hopefully.  No need for me to provide any pics, all I've got is some mismatched rolling stock from the early 80s that is not valuable to the neckbearders here.  I do have a nice Arnold #2429 loco though, with some Euro passenger cars, that a buddy brought me back from Germany quite a while age.  That is what I want to see run.

N scale was always my favorite as a kid.

Kato track looks great and I would recommend it until you settle on a permanent layout.

After that I would do the Atlas flex track and cut and customize to what you want and do your own roadbed.

Some of those older Arnold units can be very good runners, you should be fine if you give it a good cleaning.  What do you have for a power pack?

I'll send you a PM.  I've got several European rolling stock as well as some misc Unitrack stuff I might part with.

I don't know about n scale, but there will be lots of stuff on eBay
Walthers should have some info on their website - they are a distributor mostly, but they do sell from their website.
