Time to get a peq-2 or better.  Looking through a tube through another tube is terrible tactics. Especially if neither are fixed or aligned.

I ordered a Crye Nightcap. I think it will suit my NV needs better than a cheap bump helmet.

Check out this thread.
https://www.ar15.com/forums/armory/What-kind-of-mount-for-the-Crye-Precision-Nightcap-/18-560103/

And there's a link in that thread to this thread (if you need it):
https://www.ar15.com/forums/Armory/Crye-Nightcap-big-head-mod-swap-to-H-Nape/18-543756/

You'll definitely want to do the harness swap if you have a larger head. I could barely get the stock straps clipped on mine before changing the harness out.  I've posted this is other NV threads, but I love the modified boonie hat/crye cap that I put together. I think it's perfect for a single tube setup.

Totally agree. My earpro was as much as a single tube. Best money I've spent.

I just don't have enough use for NODs I don't think to warrant it right now. Other priorities. Frankly guns aren't really one of them right now for whatever reason. I tend to ebb and flow on my hobbies, and guns are adjacencies are ebbing right now.

There’s a blinking IR strobe on the main electrical panel for the yard that I can’t figure out. On the meter.

The stars… wow. Wow is all I have to say. I wish I had pulled this out for the Aurora the other night.

I’m looking forward to start running and gunning under NODs, but for now I’m just getting comfortable moving around the environment. I’m running the PVS 14 tube over my left eye, which is my dominant eye, though I’m right handed. I’m not sure how passive aiming will work for me. I need to get my tube set for my eye better. When I strap on my cheap bump helmet, the tube sits low, and slightly tilted up. It’s off my eye just enough that the field of view is slightly out of round, and I need to tilt my head slightly downward to view the horizon. There’s not an obvious way to adjust the tube to my eye. I’ll be shopping for a higher quality helmet soon, but I want to figure out what to look for by testing what I don’t want first.

Appreciate your business on the PVS14, thanks again.

There is some adjustment as to angle on the military/Carson J arm but honestly it's a PITA. Also, looks like an old skewl early Rhino mount, which IIRC doesn't have the same amount of adjustment a newer mount like a Norotos Lo sto will have. The manual that came with your 14 will describe how to adjust the military J arm if you decide to keep it.

Run the unit as far out from your eye as you can, don't put on the rubber eye cup. This will help with fogging.

Going to a Norotos Lo sto mount and a AX14 or Max14 pro arm will allow more adjustment, allow you to quickly move the unit from one eye to the other. The Norotos Lo sto is going to offer more adjustment, stow the NOD tighter to the helmet and is "force to overcome" versus the push button to release of a g24.     Both are here-

JRH Enterprises- NV, mounts, accessories

The passive aiming with the opposite side may take a little getting used to unless you move the arm to that side. Remember to keep your head more erect- don't bend your neck over ("Turkey necking") to the stock.

As always feel free to reach out if you have questions. Thanks again.

That won't be a problem. Sounds like it's one of the adjustable ones, if so, you'll find the lowest setting will give the least bloom.

I have run the dual illumination RMRs on top of ACOGs and some Glock pistols for years- no problem with the dual illuminated also.

Most people dont actually get outside and do anything.

Fair, and it's not like I'm out every night with them, but I do hike and star gaze with them pretty often, and shoot under them (private indoor range) every week.

I haven't gone down the thermal rabbit hole yet because I don't hunt warm things. Plus digital technology gets 2x as good for 1/2 the price every so often, so I'm waiting for that to come down to the "fun but not incredibly useful though I'd be silly not to buy it at this price" threshold.

I think you are making the right decision on using your dominant eye.  I wouldn't worry too much about passive and just get a laser.  If you want passive get a mount where you can swing the PVS14 over to your right eye.

I just picked up a set of L3 2300 FOM on a Black Friday deal.  Can't wait to see them.

These are what I have. Not cheap. Just worth it. Like OP said about NODs, if you just skip one nice AR you can have these instead and you notice the difference every minute of range time. So it's a good return on investment.

I set my "night gun" up to have all the options. IR light and laser, IR light, white light, passive dot over an LPVO scope. Honestly once you get it all set up it's nice to have all the options. I can't imagine a situation in the US where I would need to passively shoot someone in self defense, but considering it was ~$100 for a dot that works with NV (and is a back up if the scope breaks) that's not all bad. Currently thinking about adding some night capacity to other stuff after this afternoon we literally had a power outage and the whole house went black. First thought was "shit my beer will get warm" and second was "damnit my battle belt pistol isn't set up for NODs". Truthfully it's not even set up for white light. Gonna have to change both of those things here shortly.

btw power is back and I survived.

Modern tubes beat the snot out of older generation stuff and even the digitals like the Sionyx opsin.  I currently have a sionyx and it's 'okay' but nowhere near ideal for anything outside of supplemental IR or bright nights under a full moon.

You can get decent specs on gen 2 stuff from TNVC, but unfilmed white phosphor gen 3 seems to the the $$$ hot stuff.  You can get things like an ECOTI to add thermal overlay to a PVS-14, etc.

I'm looking at (once I can afford one) just getting one of the gen 2 from TNVC and upgrading the tube later.  You just to be able to get really well reviewed chinese nods like the Jerry 14 for a song, but I think they've been discontinued.

Thank you for the business.!

My first time using NODS was in 1992 with a Gen 2 monocular for surveillance stuff. We started the NV FAQ  forum here on the ARF back in 2003. The NV Tech forum is still alive and well today!

I now use NV for a lot of astronomy stuff, which is amazing as other users have talked about here. I still get excited at our training events when someone peers into NV for the first time!

It still a hobby of mine today after all these years. Many things have come and gone, but not my NODS.

Personally got rid of the top dot on my LPVO setups. Passive aiming is cool with a red dot and the magnifier removed, but just seemed clunky with the LPVO and having that much going on underneath/behind the MRDS. And having no top dot makes the setup cleaner with a tall LPVO mount, which feels better while wearing something that has a chin strap (like night vision with the dominant eye folded up to look through the scope). I may just be bad at passive shooting though.

The electrical panel has something to do with the remote/wireless reader the company uses, I suppose, mine does it too. My outdoor cameras pick up IR. It’s amazing all the shit people have that emits IR, I can see people coming blocks away.

I had to put tape over my Ecobee because of the IR.

My F150’s cabin will light up every so often, especially just after locking it.

There is a reason Garmin Tactix watches have a Stealth mode.

Your not going to see an IR laser with thermal if that's what your asking.

Sort of. In retrospect, what I was trying to ask is what sorts of things can be seen by the different types of night vision. Are there any other things that can be seen by either that I left out in the lists below?

Thermal can see:

1. Heat

Night Vision, e.g., PVS 14 type, can see:

1. IR coming from various devices
2. Laser spot on target

(Newbie question) Is a laser held on target seen by both night vision AND thermal or only night vision, or... ?

I mean, you *can* if you have a big enough laser...

Very cool OP, thanks for sharing!

I don't know anybody with NODs and frankly they are too rich for my blood. Maybe one day.

@-Obsessed- I’m up by cbus if you want to try my binos sometime?  Or if you’ve got a local range that allows night shooting we can figure something out.

I ordered a Crye Nightcap. I think it will suit my NV needs better than a cheap bump helmet.

@ELittlefield weirdly enough I prefer my nightcap mounted under a carjou boonie. I feel like it fits better.  Don’t know why, maybe just me. But it def looks cooler.

I appreciate it, but I'm 2 hours away ish to the SW. I'm not aware of any range around here that allows night shooting but I have a buddy who owns 10 acres directly across from the range (their sign is actually on his property) and he said he plans on getting a range put in, so it won't be a forever limitation. Actually looking forward to shooting more again. I go in spurts. I put 42k rounds through my 300 BLK the first 4 years I owned it and then only 1k rounds more in the past 4 years.

Yup its a Carcajou Tactical "Bravo Six" Boonie Hat. I use it more than my bump or Kevlar.

Oooh.  There goes some money after Christmas.

They look awesome, but are very expensive (well, not in comparison to everything else NV ). I still may get one eventually. I wanted to see if I could make my own using my Crye cap and a $20 boonie (I believe mine is XL, possibly XXL), and it worked out pretty well. I sewed velcro patches inside the hat that line up with the velcro on the Crye cap. The hardest part was getting the mounting holes for the plate lined up with the holes I made in the hat and the Crye cap.

My next door neighbor has NODS and commented once on how lit up my house is with IR cameras compared to everyone else in the neighborhood.    I guess it's a good tool to find out who is paranoid on your street.

You can get a knockoff Wilcox mount for under $100. I have two. They are ok. They work well enough except the dovetail lockup can be a bit sticky. Pushing the NV forward to relieve pressure really helps to get the button to move to unlock them and remove NV from the mount. First time I about shit since I thought the mount was locked up and wouldnt release my NV.

Knockoff mount

I keep those for spares and guests. My hat has a bona fide Wilcox from TNVC.

I have wanted nods for years. I could buy them if I just tightened up a few things for a month or two. But I know I would never use them. I don’t larp. I don’t have a group of friends nearby to use them with. My best friend bought them two months ago and loves them but he lives 12 hours away so again, no one to use them with. I don’t have an exciting job anymore that I could use them for. I want them but I just don’t think it’s a wise investment for me at this time. For others I am sure it is money well spent and I am definitely envious of them. Maybe one day I’ll pull the trigger

Wait until you look at someones smart watch.

That blew my mind first time I saw it.

Garmin smart watches with "night vision mode" is awesome for this.  Turns off the flashing heart rate sensor and dims the screen brightness to work under nods.  It's a necessity for a smartwatch when you have other people with nods hunting you.

As others have already said, one of the biggest things for comfort with nods is having a good counterweight.  You want your helmet to be balanced front/back.  You can start by weighing your nods and mount and adding that much as a counterweight to the back.  You can buy a really nice adjustable counterweight system or you can just add a small pouch with lead fishing weights.  If the weight is very off center it will fatigue your neck muscles much faster and you will constantly be adjusting your tubes as they move around.

Getting comfortable moving around under nods just takes time and practice.  If you have your focus adjusted to infinity everything within a few feet will be out of focus.  You will adjust to looking further ahead of you as you walk to anticipate obstacles.  Also, with a single tube vs duals it will take you longer for your brain to adjust to limited depth perception.
