Les Miserables (original cast)
Phantom of the Opera

If you're worried about musicals turning you gay, just watch Sweeny Todd. You'll get good music and a dozen on-screen murders. If only John Webster had lived to see it.

The original Music Man is excellent, The redo was absolutely pathetic. Broderick couldn't sing if he had a bayonet to his back. Preston owned that role.

Shirley Jones was SMOKIN hot when they filmed that.

you know he was sick as a dog with a fever dangerously high while filming the Singing in the Rain bit..

big fan of Mr Kelly, He really changed, hell nearly created the American Musical we know today and a real mans man kind of guy and very straight...

yes, I'm a closeted Musical Fan..can't work with 1000s of gay waiters and maître d's for 40 years and not learn appreciation of the craft..
music man
man of la mancha
Chicago
singing in the rain

and all the greats that were in them..far too many to list and the old 40's and 50's movies like white Christmas will make me sit down for 2 hours.

Man, Fiddler on the Roof scared the hell out of me when I was very young. That nightmare scene in the graveyard. It was gratuitous anyway because Tevye was not even recounting a real dream but just one he made up as an excuse to call off an engagement. Manipulative bastard.

It must have been in the theater, too, larger than life.

I've heard the album many times but I just realized that in all this time I've never watched the movie again or even one clip. Certainly not the nightmare scene. Until just a few minutes ago.

Thanks GD. Perhaps now the healing can begin. Here it is, if you think you can handle it.

Actually, OP, what you used as your example of a musical is an operetta...

An older theatric form than the musical....Some folks refer to it as light opera.

So would something like Sweeny Todd count more like an operetta since it's mostly just people standing there and singing with no dancing? I never thought about the distinction until I talked to a guy who was trying to make a career doing shows like that, whereas before I'd always thought of it as everything being either a play (nobody sings unless it's part of the plot) or a musical (everyone breaks into song and dance at the drop of a hat).

ETA: I mean a distinction within relatively modern shows that people think of as Broadway shows. Not opera, Vaudeville, etc.

Big fan of musicals here. I have at least 20 on DVD including 'Lil Abner, which a lot of people do not know was made into a musical, and a good one too.

My favorite musical actor is of course, Stubby Kaye (on the right in the video). This song is perfect. It shows the way they saw the government even back in the late 50's.

Guys and dolls and West Side Story are my favorites

...........and yes, The Blues Brothers is classified as a musical!

I almost, almost, went to college to do stage construction and/or lighting design.

Did it in HS and had a lot of fun. What was also amusing was for my junior year we did "Joseph" (I did lighting) and I was the only person who'd actually seen it on stage.

One of my spotlight guys did decide to dance along with one of the numbers and ended up kicking his marked up script off the balcony and into the audience.

And to actually contribute, my GF introduced me to old-school musicals. As others have mentioned, Gene Kelly movies.

Those guys could dance. The physical condition they had to be in for them to keep goign they way they did, it is rather impressive.

White Christmas is also another good one. Danny Kaye can dance like a mofo. Vera-Ellen had some legs on her

I actually don't mind an old school musical. And if Willy Wonka counts, then count me in.

Excellent movie.

I'm partial to Singin' in the Rain (Donald O'Connor at his best). Chicago is IMHO the best of the newer musicals.

The Producers (ORIGINAL), Willy Wonka (ORIGINAL) and Rocky Horror were all great too.

The Producers wasn't a musical till Mel Brooks did the play. It was a comedy about a musical! Then they made a play musical about making a musical, then they made a movie musical about making a musical... Kinda a show-within-a-show trifecta.

What did y'all think of The Artist? I think it captured the essence of films from the late 30's and 40's mostly, and even though it isn't a musical persay, I feel it is the closest thing since the That's Entertainment II. I really hope we can see a film that can hold it's own to the great musical films of the 30's and 40's, or even the Rogers and Hammerstein epic musicals of the 60's.

Oh, and this is always good for a lighthearted romp.

I generally like most musicals but Oklahoma! was Awfulhoma!  All the songs except for the title one were crap, and the plot was retarded.

Annie Get Your Gun was also pretty bad.

Those two musicals are examples of subject matter that I should enjoy...being turned into garbage.

If I were having a conversation with someone, and they suddenly broke out into song, I'd want to punch them in the throat.  That feeling transfers to the "art form" even more powerfully.

If I develop time travel, I'm going to find the playwright that said, "No wait.  Instead of speaking the next lines of dialogue, let's have him sing a song about what he's going to do," and beat him to death with a playbill.

The mime, at least, has the courtesy to keep his yap shut.
