i was 37 when i saw singing in the rain for the first time. i don't think i could have appreciated it when i was younger. those guys were amazing. not just the singing but all the dancing and moves they had. the shape those . Gene Kelly was the man. Er, no homo. you know he was sick as a dog with a fever dangerously high while filming the Singing in the Rain bit.. big fan of Mr Kelly, He really changed, hell nearly created the American Musical we know today and a real mans man kind of guy and very straight... yes, I'm a closeted Musical Fan..can't work with 1000s of gay waiters and maître d's for 40 years and not learn appreciation of the craft.. music man man of la mancha Chicago singing in the rain and all the greats that were in them..far too many to list and the old 40's and 50's movies like white Christmas will make me sit down for 2 hours. Most of the ones already mentioned, Phantom, West Side, Grease, Blue Brothers.....but Fiddler on the Roof probably tops my list.
eta: Xanadu and... The Muppet Movie. |

Actually, OP, what you used as your example of a musical is an operetta...
An older theatric form than the musical....Some folks refer to it as light opera. |

As an amateur actor, I judge a man's sexuality by the musicals he likes/has appeared in.
Some of you really need to leave Narnia and announce your intentions.

I just can't believe that Hannibal the Cannibal has not been mentioned.
All the Muppet Movies. No love for Newsies? |

So would something like Sweeny Todd count more like an operetta since it's mostly just people standing there and singing with no dancing? I never thought about the distinction until I talked to a guy who was trying to make a career doing shows like that, whereas before I'd always thought of it as everything being either a play (nobody sings unless it's part of the plot) or a musical (everyone breaks into song and dance at the drop of a hat). ETA: I mean a distinction within relatively modern shows that people think of as Broadway shows. Not opera, Vaudeville, etc. |

Quoted: Big fan of musicals here. I have at least 20 on DVD including 'Lil Abner, which a lot of people do not know was made into a musical, and a good one too. My favorite musical actor is of course, Stubby Kaye http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwqPBlSxb-0 Guys and dolls and West Side Story are my favorites ...........and yes, The Blues Brothers is classified as a musical! View Quote You got me thinking and yep, there's a musical of Titus Andronicus. I can feel my toes tapping already. |

"By the way, my name's Herman...and I hate musicals"
Ten points to whoever IDs the reference without Google. |

I almost, almost, went to college to do stage construction and/or lighting design.
Did it in HS and had a lot of fun. What was also amusing was for my junior year we did "Joseph" (I did lighting) and I was the only person who'd actually seen it on stage. One of my spotlight guys did decide to dance along with one of the numbers and ended up kicking his marked up script off the balcony and into the audience. |
|
And to actually contribute, my GF introduced me to old-school musicals. As others have mentioned, Gene Kelly movies.
Those guys could dance. The physical condition they had to be in for them to keep goign they way they did, it is rather impressive. White Christmas is also another good one. Danny Kaye can dance like a mofo. Vera-Ellen had some legs on her I actually don't mind an old school musical. And if Willy Wonka counts, then count me in. |

Musicals gave way to violence. I'lll list my favorites and some other good ones. Singing in the Rain, An American in Paris, On the Town, Meet Me in St.Louis, Wizard of Oz, Willy Wonka and the Chocalate factory, West Side Story, Gigi, My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, Grease, Guys and Dolls, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, The King and I, Les Girls, The Producers, Ziefeld Follies, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Easter Parade, The Gay Divorcee and Sweeny Todd.

Excellent movie. I'm partial to Singin' in the Rain (Donald O'Connor at his best). Chicago is IMHO the best of the newer musicals. The Producers (ORIGINAL), Willy Wonka (ORIGINAL) and Rocky Horror were all great too. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers Excellent movie. I'm partial to Singin' in the Rain (Donald O'Connor at his best). Chicago is IMHO the best of the newer musicals. The Producers (ORIGINAL), Willy Wonka (ORIGINAL) and Rocky Horror were all great too. The Producers wasn't a musical till Mel Brooks did the play. It was a comedy about a musical! Then they made a play musical about making a musical, then they made a movie musical about making a musical... Kinda a show-within-a-show trifecta. |

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers Oklahoma (naturally) View Quote I generally like most musicals but Oklahoma! was Awfulhoma! All the songs except for the title one were crap, and the plot was retarded. Annie Get Your Gun was also pretty bad. Those two musicals are examples of subject matter that I should enjoy...being turned into garbage. |

The most contemptible form of "entertainment" known to man. Oh really? http://media.mlive.com/saginawnews_impact/photo/11286770-large.png If I were having a conversation with someone, and they suddenly broke out into song, I'd want to punch them in the throat. That feeling transfers to the "art form" even more powerfully. If I develop time travel, I'm going to find the playwright that said, "No wait. Instead of speaking the next lines of dialogue, let's have him sing a song about what he's going to do," and beat him to death with a playbill. The mime, at least, has the courtesy to keep his yap shut. |
