Fire alarm went off at work during lunch today. Manager on vacation, and I was left in charge of department. Most folks were still at their desks as we had a shortened day due to T'giving tomorrow and lots to do with Friday being a half-staff day. Heads popped out of cubes - "Is it a test? Is it a test?" No, not a test. They let us know when there are tests, as they did recently. I grab my bag, throw phone into it, quickly grab my wrap from back of chair and travel mug from desk, and begin to head out. That's when I noticed a few folks were still at their desks. I went back to roust them, and they were VERY reluctant to leave. A very loud "Out! Now!" from me finally lit a fire under their arses and got them out of the building. These few were grumbling a bit, though, at me having "forced" them away from their desks.
Turns out the warehouse that abuts our warehouse/office was having some work done. Guys accidentally busted a water line, which set off fire alarm. At least that's what we were told. I've one heck of a strong work ethic and work pretty long hours, but I'm not so fond of my job as to refuse to leave my desk during an unscheduled fire alarm. WTF? I wanted to tell the reluctant ones, "If you burn up, fine! No skin off my nose since you didn't want to leave!" |

Grab bag, keys, and coat, lock computer and GTFO.
We have monthly drills, not announced as a drill until we hit the parking lot and accountability completed. Kharn Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I have had 2nd and 3rd degree burns, So I always get out if an fire alarm goes off, and it is not a drill.
Fire alarm goes off at my work you GTFO right now. No grabbing your stuff you just go. Of course we have some more dangerous substances than your average office.
I'm one of those dorks with the orange hats and clipboards. Official Floor Monitor. I'm like Dwight Shrewt in my building. Everyone is GTFO in 2 min or less. Hell, after I'm done evacuating my floor I find another building and start kicking down doors. i don't even care if their fire alarm is going off or not. No such thing as a drill in my world
It's cold up here right now, So I would return to my office, retrieve jacket, water bottle, and GTFO.
Chance to be lazy and not work on the company dime for a bit? Yup, I grab my BoB and go stand in the parking lot with my co-workers.

In some locales, you are legally required to vacate the building upon fire alarm.
I think some people have the mentality of "it could never happen" so they sit there in disbelief.

Our fire drills are very rare. Fire Marshall had to threaten a fine if we skipped it for a second YEAR. Then a real fire alarm went off and managers told people to stay on the phones. When they finally decided to evac, they made everyone exit a single fire exit for the department even though others were closer, to make it easier to count heads. During drills only certain exits are used for the same reason. Almost 4k people on site. Total clusterfuck all the way around, and no one checks off names anyway. Good luck if you've got your ipod cranked up and in a back cubicle.
I'm like ^^, Navy firefighting taught me to grab an extinguisher and follow the smoke, but working here I'm more inclined to GTFO. |

Our office bldg is full of government trash ( Parks Dept hippies, tree huggers and obama voters ).
Those dipshits routinely burn toast and what have you to the tune of the alarms going off at least once per week. I pay no more attention.... |
As one of the plant managers- No, I must make sure all employees get out and are accounted for
ours get set off a few times a year , have yet to see anyone leave the building
Drills or alarm testings are announced. Otherwise, report it and check for smoke, then gtfo and wait for plant operations and fire brigade.

I work at a refinery. So, yeah. We get the fuck out now. Way out.

I am required to treat all fire alarms lasting more than 30 seconds as real and evacuate.
I have a Halon 1301 fire suppression system working in the room next to me right now. |
I've been in a fire. People seem to think that you can wait, assume its a false alarm and leave when you actually see heavy smoke or flames.
That is positively stupid. I get up, check it out and usually leave unless I can verify that there is no fire. |
The building I work in is made of wood and drier than a popcorn fart. If the fire alarm goes off it's time to GTFO.
I remember my first desk pop......
Most people do not go crazy when the fire alarm goes off at work. It is sorta strange because if there is a fire where I work you do not want to be around. |
Masturbate vigorously.
Wouldnt happen though, there are no fire alarms in mom's basement.
Chums up, let's do this! Leeeeeeroooy Jeeeeeeeenkiiiinsssss!
Then I'd walk outside. |

As a fireman, I would like to thank you. Nothing like hunting for some retard during a bullshit smoke run...
Room off. Hey! Where's Bob? Bob is too trifling to carry his ass from the 11th floor. Dickbag. Also, don't hide in the closet. We sometimes looks there. |

I'm a firefighter, so I would go see what the deal is. LOL. When there's a fire alarm I head to my vehicle, put my gear on and drive there. As for being in a place off the job when the alarm sounds? If I'm by myself I might snoop, if HH6 and daughter #2 are with me I might send them out and snopp, but if it's the daughter and me we GTFO. |
I'm a welder. If there is a fire, most likely I started it. I would be doing the "oh the noes!" dance trying to put it out.

Push a desk through the windows and rappel down the 11 floors to street level...

I work from home. If the house were on fire you'd better believe I'd be scooping up the laptop, tossing it in my bag, grabbing phone, keys and wallet and leaving-or grabbing the fire extinguisher and trying to help.
We do these periodically at work.
The last one was while the President of the company was having a televised 'town hall' in the building. I imagine someone was fired 'for cause' for that one. (I slapped my laptop shut, grabbed my shit... and went to a different building. Heck, I was camping in a vacant desk anyway...) |
Well, I work on a submarine, so when the fire alarm goes off, I become a firefighter( Reference 5/23/2012 fire onboard USS Miami)
Since I deal with life safety systems where I work, I check the emergency exit door to be sure it's clear, then send all but me and one other person out of the buiding. I'll leave the door open til I see a reason to leave (smoke/fire/creaking noises/actual water flowing, etc...) i don't much care what other people in the building do. I'm not responsible for them.
Yes, I leave. That said, I know folks who hide in the SCIF since the security folks can't get into it.
I regularly sleep through fire alarms.

The room next to me is filled with hydrogen. I am happy to exit the building.

Alarm goes off I GTFO. BTW, I never don't have my keys with me, as I'm often far from my desk.
I'm not taking any chance with fire, I boogie. It sure as hell isn't worth my life to get a few minutes extra work in. At least the place I work now isn't full of toxic gases like all my previous companies. |
Unscheduled..... I would probably wait till no one was watching, kick my shit over and light it and a bunch of small fires on the way out.
