I have SF, Laser Devices, Streamlight and Fenix. The SF and Laser Devices lights are mounted on weapons and the only lights I'll trust on my weapons. I carry Streamlight and Fenix on my duty belt. Each have their own roles. My streamlight HP xt throws a tighter beam than my Fenix TK40. I use the Streamlight for a spot light, I use the Fenix if I need to brighten up a whole building. Still don't believe the TK40 is 300 lumens much less their advertised 630 lumens. Thats when comparing it to my 200 lumen streamlight. I do like the Fenix though. The reason for this (unless Fenix has changed) is that they measure lumens as total output AT THE DIODE. Whereas Surefire measures ACTUAL light output, after hitting the reflector and passing through the lens etc. Hence why a 100 lumen surefire in use looks just as bright as almost anyone elses 250 lumen light. I like fenix lights, but its almost impossible to read lumens on a surefire light, and lumens on someone elses to have an accurate comparison. Fenix and Quark have been doing out the front lumens for a long time now. Shows how long its been since I was deep into flashlights. So you are telling me the high end Fenix lights will actually impress me over the "200" lumen L2D in my pocket? As in I won't be saying "This isn't anywhere near 350 lumens" like I used to do? If so I'll take your word for it and try one

I find the quark line to be more impressive, but I have the Fenix TK35 that is an honest 800 out the front. Its impressive as hell |

I'll give it a shot. I've got an M3 combat light with 225 lumen bulb on one of my ARs, if it blows that away I'll be very impressed That may be the heart of the problem. Surefire came out with some really bitchin lights, and then they rested on their laurels. The industry passed them by. Comparing a light thats probably a decade old design to one that came out last year...... |

I have and always have had mostly Surefires, but a couple of observations have made me think the Fenix lights aren't a bad option:
1. I had a 6Z crap out on me during a hurricane a few years ago, just from getting wet outside. Unacceptable. 2. Louis Awerbuck, who's judgment I trust, uses and speaks well of Fenix lights. Nobody pays him to "endorse" them. |

Comparing a light thats probably a decade old design to one that came out last year...... I would spend $250 right now for a Surefire Titan that has a decent neutral to warm tint. I would spend money on a 6P that had only two modes if the modes where accessed by turning the bezel like a Fenix TK11 and could use an 18650 as well as 123 primaries. I would buy a M6 if it ran off 4- 18650 batteries and had an LED that had 4 brightness modes and worked like a TK40. I would buy a E2D LED defender if it had the same UI as the TK11 and took an 18650 or 123 primary. |

What do you guys like as far as lights for a keychain? quark preon revo They don't have the aluminum versions in stock but I am sure you can find them from a dealer. They are really incredible lights for the money. |
|
When I first got really serious about tactical shooting etc...there was only ONE company, Surefire. I have many of their lights and can honestly say they have never failed me in any way. Then I bought a couple of Pentagon Lights, they were good lights.....then Surefire sued them out of business. Oh well. Then a couple years ago I bought my first 47's Quark. It blew my old Surefires out of the water! It was half the price, half the weight, had a brighter light, better throw, multi modes and battery life was much longer. I looked for a comparable Surefire....there wasn't one at the time. None, nothing.
Now I run Fenix's, 47's and my old Surefires that have been upgraded with Cree Leds etc.....I've bought my last new, Surefire light. The increased cost is not commensurate with the value and function of the newer lights in my experience. My 47's and Fenix lights, though not tested as long, have never given me any problems at all and they have been used in exactly the same way my original SF's were. I know one big name instructor, everyone here would know his name, he writes a column for a well respected Special Weapons And Tactics type magazine....The light he carries on his belt is a Fenix and he has for 3-4 years now and has not one bitch about it. He has used it in hundreds of classes, dropped it, kicked it used it in the rain, snow etc....The guy owns DOZENS of flashlights including one of the Surefires they land aircraft with (just kidding, but it's an $800 flashlight) and the one he carries on his belt to use if he has to throw down is a Fenix. Good enough for me. |

Surefire: The Harley-Davidson of flashlights.
I'll never buy another Surefire. Since anecdotal evidence is what's being presented in this thread, I'll mention that the only flashlight malfunction I've had is a tailcap switch breaking on a Surefire Centurion C3. I hate the x200s I bought when I "had" to have Surefire, and I would trade both of them for a single Streamlight TLR1 C4. I have 2 TK11s mounted on rifles, which I do not take off when I go to the range, and each of them has always lit up when I pressed the button after 1000s of mounted rounds. I have a Maelstrom G5 that Surefire can't compete with for performance for less than 4x the cost. Surefires do not accept 18650 battery cells, making it much, much more expensive for me to use them. The day Fenix or Maelstrom make a TLR1 or x300 style light, or a 951/961 style light, is the day I upgrade every Surefire I still currently have on a weapon. |

On a positive note, SF lights still command a great resell value, so when I got rid of all of mine I had no problem getting my money back to buy BETTER lights for less. |

I have one and it seems like a great weapon light ! Compared to the Streamlight, it's weaker in brightness, to focused (spot) to be practical for it's brightness (I want a throwing spot on a rifle I may poke 50-100 yards with, but on what is primarily a handgun light, I want flood), and the rocker switch is terrible. The only features I like about the x200/300/400 are the mounts and the way you can push the rocker for momentary. For everything else I prefer the TLRs. Quoted:

Gotta pay to play I don't mind spending money where I can consider it money well spent. Aimpoints for instance. But for everything I spend money on, whether it's gear or tools or clothing, I have good and poor experiences which back up my future decisions. I've paid to play the Surefire game before I was made aware of the options currently available. I have a 961, a 951, two x200s, a C3 and a 8x predecessor that's older than half the forum and still says "Laser Products" on it. Money isn't the sole concern. I won't spend less than $400 (because that's what a Comp M3 costs) on an optic that I might need to work for more than a range trip. I don't consider Wolf to be appropriate defense ammunition. I'd rather have one $1200 TRP than three $400 RIAs. But at the same time, I'm not going to buy a Harley when I get get more performance for half the price in a Suzuki, I'm not going to buy Mac and Snap-On tools that I need for a job or repair I might do twice in my life, and I'm not going to buy an Alienware gaming computer when 15 minutes on Newegg will give me the exact same abilities for 1/3 the cost. Less money on Surefires and CR123s, when there are better options available, means more money for good ammo. |

Thats what i use in my C2, L4 and Scout lights Rechargeable CR123s were not very prevalent when I discovered 18650s. I've invested enough into those cells and chargers that I never looked into rechargeable CR123s, and I simply quit using the lights that don't accept 18650s. The only thing I keep 123s for now is long term shelf life. |

I need my light to be hard core cause I'm not easy on them at all ! I've carried a Surefire C2 as my primary light for the last 10-years or more. A few years back i converted it to LED and use rechargable batteries in it. Lots of finish wear and a few dents in the bezel, but thats going to happen to anything worn openly on the belt if you routinely get into fights on asphault and concrete. Some complain about the price of surefires but they last a lifetime and if you are LE or MIL you can get them at a huge discount or even free. My C2 was free. So was my X200, X300, M951 and a buch of P60L conversion lamps for my old P60 based lights. Hell everytime i went to shot show ,Surefire sent me home with a new light. If take a class that has a surefire employee in it more often than not everyone in the class goes home with free lights. In one class a surefire rep gave us all a new product and asked us to use it the entire class to evaluate the durability before commercial release. Surefire reps have seen inferior lights my trainees have started patrol training with and given them a free surefire on the spot. I dont see Fenix stepping up and supporting the military, LE or training community that way. Damn. I paid full price for all of mine. How did you manage to get them at discount??? I'm looking for a new weaponlight for my patrol rifle. |

Get all your buddies togather for a bulk order. Do the same with Oakley. Then, next year. Go to Shot show and start introducing yourself to people withen the companies that support your industry. As a cop you should be networking with people in LE as well as the training community and equipment manufacturers. |

I own a TK10, TK11, and TK15 as well as a few SF 6P's.
I've always had either the 10/11 mounted on my rifle for those night time hunts and never failed me. I even gave away 3 NIB 6P's to people because I didn't have a use for them. I always keep at least one of the Fenix in my truck at all times, ND has been known to get a tad bit chilly sometimes in the winter, and they all work like a champ. All three have been used at work and often dropped every single night at work for the past 4 months with no issues. Fenix is a member of Promotive, so they do offer 40% .mil discount. All my lights were purchased way before I signed up at Promotive. |

You do realize that those concerns were addressed in the beginning by making two different LED heads/lenses for the X200? X200A & X200B. One has a tighter beam with more throw. The other has more flood for handgun use. I'm well aware. My point being, there is not enough light output for a tight beam to be useful. They are anemic. I agree that the X200 is borderline for outdoor use. Its no perimiter search light for sure. 50 yards is about the max range you'll be able to see target with a X200. X300 stretches that range further. They are handgun lights after all. I'm not trying a 60 yard nightime handgun shot. I have other tools available. |

Call them, ask for LE sales, have them fax you an agency price list. Prices will be 40-60% of MSRP. Get all your buddies togather for a bulk order. Do the same with Oakley. Then, next year. Go to Shot show and start introducing yourself to people withen the companies that support your industry. As a cop you should be networking with people in LE as well as the training community and equipment manufacturers. yea! go kiss some ass and you can get free gear as well! Us civis can't do it, but I don't like the taste of ass anyway. They bought some pretty good advertising in this guy though, didn't they?

I'll give it a shot. I've got an M3 combat light with 225 lumen bulb on one of my ARs, if it blows that away I'll be very impressed That may be the heart of the problem. Surefire came out with some really bitchin lights, and then they rested on their laurels. The industry passed them by. Comparing a light thats probably a decade old design to one that came out last year...... No, only flashlight dorks think this.... SF is still THE industry when it comes to hard use illumination tools. Let me know when a better pistol light than the X300/X400 comes out or a better rifle light than the Scout. Paying top dollar for decades old technology doesnt really strike me as being a "flashlight dork". The fact is SF tech IS old as the hills..... I'm not seeing any issues with paying market value for the best weapon lights on the market. Lke I said before, SF is only bashed by flashlight dorks and those who can't afford them. Much like Colt is bashed by the "just as good" crowd. Best how? Certainly not in output or spill. Probably not in bulb reliability. Definitely not in battery compatibility. Sooo...You like the clicky tailcaps? Look, I'm not arguing to be a dick here. I own 3 SF lights. I also recognize the value of the dollar and I dont believe SF is, at this time, offering lights that represent a good value for the dollar. Why do you think otherwise? So who makes a better pistol light than the X300 or better rifle light than an M600..........? |

The friendships I've built over the years with many industry professionals are based on ass kissing? Don't be a dick. You really do not understand the relationship between companies like surefire and LE and military community at all. |

I pay for all my crap. Just a civie here. Having said that the $60 I spent at BravoCompanyUSA for a G2L-FYL bought me a helluva lot better quality than the $100 I spent on an Olight.
Never had a Fenix though. But I won't buy into too much internet hoopla since that was the reason I bought the Olight. It came well recommended.

You know, like the L1 lumax I have that has gone back to the factory twice after going through two switches. I don't believe surefire is crap since they sold me a lemon. Now it works great for an outdated light....... |

From people looking for the next greatest thing, I'm sure. It's funny how well established companies that make high quality products with a proven record of hard use are always bashed by those who think there 1/4 priced knockoff is somehow superior. I wish those folks the best of luck with their DPMS, UTG rail, NcStar optics and chinese made lights

Build quality is usually better with Surefire. The performance edge for regular hand held lights easily goes to the high end imports as well. Which one is better is subjective. For my uses Quark and Fenix really are better. You don't want or need the same features as I do, so you are pleased with less. That is your decision. Should we just shut up and not point out the differences? |

So who makes a better pistol light than the X300 or better rifle light than an M600..........? Thats not a fair question because "best" is very subjective. From a standpoint of brightest nearly every manufacturer offers models that handily trounce SF. SF light generation techniques are WAY behind the curve. From a standpoint of fit and finish SF is definitely up there in the top, if not at the top. Reliability is probably hard to really measure as everyone has their success and failure stories. I do know for what I would pay for a M600 I could buy more than 5, count them 5, Olight M20's. The Olight will probably outshine the M600 and shit, I get 5 of them. I can put one on each side of my rail and have more reliability than 1 SF light. Or I could get 4 Olight M30's which will trounce the shit out of the M600. Hell for that I could get a weapon light, a helmet light AND a duty light on my belt! Now if I could get SF at 40-60% off like others then that gives an entirely new dynamic to the SF as a candidate for a weapon light. But the MSRP prices are way way too high for what you get. Lets not overthink this. Its an aluminum body with a few batteries and a clicky cap on the back that closes a circuit. So its hard to say whats a better light than the 2 you offered. As I said, everyone has their success and failure stories. I know the for creating light, which is what a light needs to do, the SF is lagging well behind the competition and charging more than any other manufacturer to do so. With offerings from Insight and Streamlight out there....That makes the SF pill a hard one to swallow at civilian prices. |

I look at traits like reliability, durability, simplicity of use, bulk, weight, run time, brightness and in the case of weapon lights the design of the integral rail mount. |
