OP, if you are seriously looking at doing this check into pulling the body off your Excursion and buying a complete Super Duty body from these guys.

I was out there Friday and bought a bed for my "new" to me Super Duty and found that for 2,400 I could buy the entire cab, 1,900 for the bed.  Under 5,500 for eveything but chassis and firewall.

You're joking right?

The 5.4 V8 in the Excursion is pathetic. Not to mention slow as hell.  0-60 in the high 12's is even slower than the 7.3 (talking Prius with a flat tire type of acceleration here)

Have you ever pulled a 40 foot toy hauler?  GM 6.0 or ford 6.2 v8 will puke their guts out.  Diesel or big ass v10/v8 is the only way to go. Frankly, up any kind of grade or into a headwind you will hate everything but a diesel.

Did you not read it's the same frame  and rear axle as a F250 /350?
Front axle is a dana 50 with is the same as the front of a 250 until about 2004 or 2005 when the 250 got the same dana 60 as a 350

interesting, I did not know that. I looked at used Excursion and was talking to a couple of mechanics and both asked me if I pulled anything. when I told them yes, they both shook their heads and told me to get something else.

Yeah for a heavy trailer day in and day out a F350 crew cab will do the job better. This era truck though did see axles going bad and trans smoking themselves but nothing with alarming regularity.

And hey, they aren't as bad as the Dodges

My point exactly... Why a V10? We've pulled our previous 47ft trailer with our V8 Duramax Diesel with ease... You don't need a V10, you just need to get rid of the POS Ford. This is now a Ford hate thread.

That's silly, Excursions are well known to be fine for towing, just not FIFTH WHEEL towing.
As has been said, get the 7.3 if you plan to do serious towing, but the V10 (what I have) does just fine for taking a boat to the lake/river or running a trailer of stuff around.

OP.......you know that paying a body shop to cut up an Excursion the way you want to cut it up....and to make it look right....is going to cost a fortune right? You could be money and time ahead to just pick out a new pickup truck that will tow your 5th wheel.

The Excursion is build on the superduty 137" wheel base frame from the regular cab long bed frame.

My idea would be to chop off the roof after the front doors and the top where the glass is of the rear doors.

Have a custom soft top built for when not towing and also a soft partition for when towing.

The seats should allow room for the hitch directly behind it.

Plenty of cheap V10 excursions out there.

What do you think about the crazyness of my brain fart.

NO I DON'T WANT A DIESEL This is not what i want the thread to be about gas vs. diesel.

Wait a minute!  I saw this episode of the A-Team.  Didn't BA also add a turret to the Excursion?

All you need is Faceman to drive and Hannibal to wear some goofy custom to fool the bad guys.

You can do anything with money and work.  However, it won't be an excursion, or a real towing vehicle.  It would be cheaper and you would get more truck to buy a pickup and put a 3d row seat and soft top on it.

If you do a lot of towing, it will be a pain in the butt, won't tow as much as a real truck, noisy, leaky, dangerously small turning radius with the trailer on, and will have easy access by anybody with a box cutter.  You will also be on your own for towing related hard parts unless the frame is the same as a F-250 or 350.

If you just want some "redneck cool" bastardized Ranchero Excursion, go for it.  But "short wheel base" is not why folks buy towing vehicles.

Ranchcursion

or

The avalanche would still need to lose the roof and tops of the doors over the rear seats to make it be good enough for a 5er.

Buy a 4 door shotbed and shorten the bed if that's what you want.

Buy a dually and get a stronger frame and rear axle in the bargain.

Option b would be buy a regular cab long bed and remove the rear window and back of cab and front part of bed add reinforcement around the cab opening and add a seat just in front of the 5th wheel.

Add this for when not towing.
http://www.softopper.com/ford/softopper

But would still be registered as a truck. Plus i think it would be harder to go this route.
