For me,honestly I have a hard time picking the best looking one. I like them all pretty much. Everything from the Dauntless ( not a fighter , I know ) to the ME109. I like the Fock Wulf a good bit,the P-47 a lot, bombers and pretty much every aircraft from that era.

Damn, I thought I was gonna be the only one to say the P-39.

If you ever get near Kalamazoo MI go to the "Air Zoo"  Air Museum. Alot of classic palnes in fully resotred condition. I know it's not from WW2 but the "Sky Raider" is one bad ass plane when it is fully armed. As for a troop support / attack platform it must have been awsome!.

None of those listed.

The P-38L Lightning was the best looking US fighter of WW2, followed by the F8F-1 Bearcat which was in service and on route to the Pacific combat zone on a carrier when the war ended.  It's a shame it never made it into combat.

The P-47!

I may be lonely, but I'm true to the Jug!

+1. Jugs rule!!

This is my little Brittany Spaniel on the day I brought him home, the day he got his name.....Jug.

And yes he is named after my favorite A/C.

Mustang
Lightning
Corsair

This bird saw action late in the war, the F7F Tigercat. Built to work off of the new, larger carriers she would have done lots of long range work in the battle of Japan.  Neat looking bird.

My point remains valid, the USAAF could have fought the Japs in the SWPAC in 42/43 with the FAR superior Mustang if they had not sat on their hands.

I read quite well,  as I pointed out above.

The Merlin powered powered 'Stangs, which were more than a match for anything in the Pacific, did not go into service even in Europe Until Late 1943 (December). Before that, the A models which were Allison powered, were used primarily as recon and ground support, because they were atrociously underpowered, (which is to say SLOW, and SLOW pretty much equals DEAD) and even worse at high altitudes.

From '41 to late '43, the underpowered Allison Mustangs would've done no better than the P-40 against Zekes, probably worse.

If we'dve only had Super Hornets...

SG

We didn`t need Super Hornets! We had Wildcats and later the Hellcats. The Wildcat had 6-8:1 kill ratio vs the Zero, and the Hellcat was even better at 13:1! Good tactics and discipline play a part too!

P38, but it really was more of a bomber than a fighter..

My personal vote goes to the "hose nose" (F-4U) in first, but only just. Red hot second IMO and only edged out of 1st place by a tiny margin is the P-51.
