We had six participants in our hike today in NOVA. Congrats to @WhiskersTheCat of the NOVA Battle Buddies on being the first to complete the requirements for his Battle Buddy Piss Cutter. He more than exceeded the minimum pace requirement on his final required hike, averaging 16:07 per mile, 33 seconds per mile under the passing pace! https://www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/72384/20191120_230526-1168345.jpg View Quote It should have a caption, like "Don't make us pull over this Republic and come down there!" |

I'm in to form a group in SEOH. Anyone down here in the hills watching this thread?
|

I'm in SEPA, and I will make the trip to VA sooner or later, but it would be good to find some others that are closer.
|
|
Can anyone recommend a good Tier 87 ruck? Or will my hunting backpack with some gear be good enough?

I'd be interested in training with like-minded folks here in NM. Would also help do what I can to assist in organization. |

Gentlemen- please see if your hometown forum has established a Battle Buddy program yet. If your hometown is lacking one, let's locate someone who can help.

Another bump to remind people-
It is imperative that you become comfortable with being uncomfortable. |

I’m working on building up to this on my own till I can hook up with some locals. So far just 35 pounds for three miles.

Humm just making sure "probationary" counts as a PASS.
I know that test all too well...knees destroyed when I was eating crayons for almost 10 years. Later learned to Never Again Volunteer Yourself and would swim. Up until 3.5 years ago every 6 months I was up for the task, then was medically forced out. I think I could pass it now if I found the local river and swam downstream.....but unfortunately after my last hospital stay I was told not to swim for at least 2 years. If you want to go full true and blue Navy PRT fitness test, you have to do a sit and reach (sitting on the ground legs straight out in front and touch your toes for either 40 seconds or a minute? and your knees can't come off the ground), each event can be no longer than 10 minutes apart (from the end of one to the start of the next). The run course can have no vertical distance (inline/grades) of more than 20 ft per 100 yards and like 500 ft for the entire course, not sure on this but know there are limits; they prefer a flat track. You may do the events in any order. I will check a couple states HTF to see if anything is near to me. It's disappointing to know I can't hump my 60 lbs pack 15+ miles and in the mean time end up with more gear than I started with (extra rucks, rifles and anything else the dropouts left behind). |

I had the day off today so I did four miles. I need some advice from you guys that have done long distance rucking. I’m doing good with the weight. My feet are taking a beating. Mostly the balls of my feet. I don’t know if I should try the anti friction stuff. Better socks or footwear? I really want to make the six miles happen.

Quoted: Finding a sock/boot combo is important and so is developing your feet and hygiene. It could be an issue with your boots, insole, socks, or just a lack of toughening or too much sweat. Can you elaborate on "taking a beating"? Do you mean blistering, bleeding, or soreness/bruising? View Quote |

Quoted: Mostly blistering on the balls of my feet. The soreness is not bad and I expected it. I was wearing newly broken in athletic shoes and cotton socks. View Quote Yeah. Thick socks are key. I learned that the hard way. Was showering one morning and was stepping on something... it was a piece of skin that finally detached after healing. |

Quoted: Mostly blistering on the balls of my feet. The soreness is not bad and I expected it. I was wearing newly broken in athletic shoes and cotton socks. View Quote I am a fan of wool socks. I wear darn tough light cushion boot socks, they have enough elastic that they don't stretch or slip on my feet. The wool is anti-microbial and wicks sweat well in hot weather and is fairly warm in cold weather. Additionally, foot powder can help with minimizing sweat and sock slippage. Some of it is toughening your feet. Usually this issue shows symptoms of soreness, but blistering may be part of it. Starting short and working your way up in length and time of hikes helps to prevent injury due to over-use. |

Quoted: Blistering is the result of too much friction. It could be from sweat, loose fitting socks or shoes, or too much flexibility in the sole of your shoes. As said poor fit, loose fabric, cotton and some micro meshes will chesse grate you to a stand still. |
