Fuck.

I know how you feel.

Had to do the same thing about three years ago.

Cried like a baby at the vet.

Cried the whole way home (70 miles) with his little body on my wife's lap.

Cried while I dug a hole in the woods and buried him at 2 a.m.

Cried until the sun came up.

I've learned to appreciate my new dog much more, even when he pisses me off to no end.

It always sucks, but It will pass my man.

SteyrAUG,

I'm really sorry to hear that. My dog just went through cancer surgery. I don't know how she's going to do, but I know exactly what you are feeling. My sincerest condolences.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't shed tears reading your post.  I lost my Trooper suddenly and those last moments were painful.  I was very lucky to get another pup from another litter - same parents a few days later.

Truly sorry to hear your loss. I lost 2 great dogs last year about this time - thought it was going to be the end of the world. Now we have a new pup to dote on, and although things are not the same, it is healthier for us to move on as I would imagine your dog would have wanted to see you move on and enjoy life.

Very sorry to hear it.

My wife and I had to put our German Shepherd to sleep this spring and it is easily one of the hardest things we had to go through.  My wife and I were there in the examination room and she held him while the needle was injected.  It was at that exact second that I had this overwhelming fear that I had made a mistake because there was no turning back.  She held him for about 15 minutes there on the floor and I felt so bad for her.  She had him before we had ever met and it was her first pet.

Good luck

My condolences Steyr.

It's always devastating to lose a best friend.  Been there, done that, will have to do it again some day.

Sounds like he was an awesome friend.  All the best to you and your family.

The Rainbow Bridge makes me happy and sad at the same time.

I've got a 4 y/o golden retriever and would be crushed if anything happened to him.

Sorry Steyr.  I had to do the same thing on July 14th, just 5 days before her 9th birthday.  I still look for her when I open the door to the garage, when I come home, or when I pass by the patio door.  For just a split second I expect to see her looking back at me.  She was a GREAT companion, and I miss her every day.

I also buried her in the backyard in the quiet corner under the crepe myrtles where she used to go to relax.  She is wrapped in her favorite beach towles with a small bouquet of flowers from the crepe myrtles under her chin.

Hang in there Bud.  Each day becomes a little easier then the last one.

I lost my dog of over 13 years recently, and know the loss well. Still haven't been able to bring myself to replace him.

If you can start the day without caffeine,

If you can get going without pep pills,

If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,

If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,

If you can eat the same food everyday and be grateful for it,

If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy
to give you any time,

If you can overlook it when those you love take it out on you
when no fault of yours, something goes wrong,

If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,

If you can ignore a friend's limited education and never correct him,

If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,

If you can face the world without lies and deceit,

If you can conquer tension without medical help,

If you can relax without liquor,
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,

It you can say honestly that deep in your heart you have
no prejudice against creed, color, religion or politics,

Then, my friend you are almost as good as your dog.

Hereis what you do, man.

You are a good dog owner. Do your buddies memory right.

Go to the pound. Look for the dog that is the saddest (emotionally) animal in there.

Look for the one who's time is almost up.

You'll know the one when you see it.

You will walk up to its cage, it will barely look up at you. Its seen so many people.

You go in that cage, you look that dog in the eye, see the saddness,
the loss of its home and family that it loved.

Take it home.

Thats what we did, and we have never regreted it. She was the saddest dog ever. She was laying in a ball in the back of her cage. Wouldn't respond to verbal calls. Had to be picked up and put on her feet to go to the PLAY cage. Once there she was listless. Till a child walked by. She perked up, ears erect, whining. She loved kids. Maybe she had a family with kids. We brought the kids to the shelter to meet her. She saw us and sprang to her feet. They fell in love. 4+ years now. No regrets. The plan was for a puppy, we got a 2 yr old shepard mix.

Very sorry for your loss. I lost my childhood dog when I was 24. He was 15yrs old.
