Think I may have found a rifle. Guy I ran into today has an old Mossberg that's so ratty he said he'd give it to me just to see what I came up with. I should be laying hands on it tomorrow.
Not sure yet what the caliber is, if it even works, or is safe to shoot. I really want one that I can actually shoot. I'll have to check that out before I start. |

One more pic and some info on the rifle. Looks like Mossberg made them for Monkey Wards between 1938 and 1941.

Clamped the action into a wrath of god plumbing vice, bore sighted it at my .22 bullet trap and test fired the thing. It works. No idea how accurate it might be, since I was in another room with a solid plank door between me and it just in case, but the bolt didn't fly out or off, which was my main concern.
It's back together now. Trigger guard is done, scope mounts are done. I was gonna use a beat to shit old .22 scope I had laying around, but it looks like I gave that thing away. All I've really got at this point is one of those long eye relieve scopes that came with those moose nugget bubba kits. You know, the ones with the thick rubber butt pad, sling, scope, and scope mounts? Scope is brand new and looks it. I'd have to beat it to shit to make it look right, and I'm not sure it will survive the 'weathering'. A friend has a shitty pair of old binoculars that he says I can have. Thought I might take them apart and mount the left side (the one with the focusing adjustment) on the scope mount and wire it down. Paint the crosshairs onto the glass with one of those acrylic markers. OP, you want me to start my own thread for this? I don't want to pollute your thread with pics of this one. |

That mossberg would be a good victim.
Sorry for no posts. I have filled a claim with eBay since I have had no word from the seller. Looking for another stock to buy. Kinda twiddling my thumbs till then. I have all the other supplies. Just no stock and that is 90% of the build. |

With the condition this rifle was in when I got it, this just feels like cheating.

Width and length were perfect. I thought I'd notch the central pipe at the cardinal points and run some fine wire into the notches to form the crosshairs. Otherwise, I'll have to use that great big 2-7X32 that looks fresh-minted. Suggestions? ETA: I have no friggin' clue why the board software decided to rotate that second pic 90 degrees and shrink it to 1/4 size. I'll take better pics later today when my G2 finishes recharging. |

Suggestions? The last pic reminds me of when I was a kid, us hoodlums had pop guns that we would play guns with. One of the kids took some plumbing parts and made a "scope" for it, for extra accuracy and the ability to shoot through fences (for some reason). I guess if you look at it as a game made up by a bunch of ten year olds the rules made sense. |

I did have some carb cleaner, but we were trying to figure out why a friend's Commando carbine (inherited from his father) wouldn't safe properly, and when we opened it up it was so grody a Russian would have scolded him for poor maintenance. |

Finally!!! Work begins tomorrow. I will post detailed pics of the stock in the daylight tomorrow. It is unfinished and in rough shape, but it was cheap.

Here are some better pictures. It was stored in workshop unfinished so there is discoloration, spilled stain, white paint drops, water marks, and aging to the wood. It will need a light sanding before clear coating as it is sticky in places and won't take the clear coat well. All in all I would say half the work is done for me VS a factory finished stock. After a light sanding I will likely decoupage some fallout related images to the stock and then weather them. My hope is to give a sun bleached and weathered sticker feel, like you put stickers of all the places you have been and things you have seen on it.

Here is what the barreled action looks like. It's in good shape. Some worn jeweling on the bolt. But otherwise it is excellent. 20" barrel is my guess. The rifling looks unfired.
I dropped it in the stock and the stock is gonna have to be fit slightly as the safety won't disengage. But not by much. I also wanna get a wood carving tool and do some ratty checkering on parts since there is none. Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File |

Leave it all natural! Don't clear coat it. Spill some more oil, paint, whatever on it! It took about an hour and a half by hand with sandpaper and files, but the stock is fully inlet for the rifle and Magpul bottom metal. Tested feed and function with the provided Magpul mag and some M2 ball. And it worked like gangbusters. It is actually a really good inlet job, I should have been more messy lol. |

For the rest of y'all looking at doing something like this, Centerfire Systems just sent me an ad where they're selling C&R eligible 1916 Spanish Mausers in 7X57, fair to good condition, for $150.
If ever there was a sign from above that all you fuckers should build you some Fallout rifles, this is it. |

Big update. Got some of the "stickers" on. Got 3-4 more to go.
