Man, if you can find one, the old nissan hard bodies 4x4 are hard to beat. The motors last for forever if maintained.

I read your other thread.13K with a burnt clutch? I would go back bitching. That's not normal wear for a car that light weight. If they keep fighting you I'd try to have it Lemon lawed.

As far cheap cars,
98-2011 Crown Vic P71 are great cars that can be had for cheap.
Toyota's and Honda's are great but sometimes people can charge a lot for them.
Old Ford Ranger's with 4cly 5speed are pretty bulletproof
I've had good luck with late 90's early 2000's GM's with the 3.8 motor

This. They're grandpa cars and can often be found inexpensively and with low mileage due to the fact that they're not "cool" and people overlook them. I bought my son a 1999 Buick Park Avenue two years ago and that behemoth consitantly gets 27 or 28 mpg on the highway. I'm looking for a work car for myself right now and am seeking one of these models with the 3800 in it.

I have two Corollas.   The 1993-1997 generation was a good run for them.   Each has around 200,000 miles and have needed very little.

The Geo Prizm is the same car basically.

If u r a po' folk (like me), these are hard to beat.

I just bought two cars.

One is a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire with 65K miles.  I paid $3000.  This is my 5th one, I've had great service out of these little tanks.

Two is a 1999 Ford Crown Vic with 75K miles.  I paid $3500.  Little old lady car and not an ex cop car.  My wife's new commute is 10 miles round trip.  I hope to keep this one going for a long long time.

There are lots of good cars out there people are selling because they need money. Craigslist is a great place to look.

Your friend is wise. Audis are great for a few years, then every possible thing breaks. That's going to be a HIGH maintenance car now. You can get mid-2000's loaded Audis for not much more for the same reason. That thing is going to need thousands in repairs soon.

Honda for eternal cars if you get oil changes.

That has the makings of a collosal money pit. Audis tend to be neither reliable or cheap to repair.

There's a reason they lose an extraordinary amount of value compared to a Civic or Corolla.

2500 aint much...finding a car at that price that doesn't need another 2500 in work is going to be tough. This isnt something you can just ask on the internet, you have to search for weeks months to find the one, that is if you know what to look for...or get lucky.

personally at that price I would get a BMW e30 coupe but only if you are comfortable with your own repairs. They are simple and easy to work on and a blast to drive, and still look cool.

I've been running Ford Taurus's for the last 5 years. The pre-Ford 500 models go for peanuts. Yeah, they're buggy POS's, but you run em into the dirt and buy another. Picked up an '06 with 180k on it for $3k two years ago. No problems besides the GF killing the cat converter by driving 20k miles while the thing was misfiring.

Ok. But you have already taken the big financial hit . Does it get horrible mileage or does it need major repairs?

Every time one changes vehicles there is a cost involved . It can be dealer profit or the time involved to shop around all the BS on the used car market. After you find the next car there is usually some unexpected expense.

You have taken the big hit at buying a new car, change the oil , drive it sanely and every year you keep putting miles on it without running out and buying a different vehicle you mitigate the money you dropped in the last year. Get a second job or work some OT or brown bag some lunches and pay any loan off early . When you pay the loan off continue putting aside a monthly payment (to yourself !) into a car fund to avoid some or all the expense of borrowing money for the next vehicle .

Folks kill me sometimes , they buy a "fun" car because they can and then after 18 months or so they trade it on something "sensible" to save money. Yeah they save $20 a week on gas but they are paying $150 or $200 a month extra on the new note , taxes and insurance for the newer car . Three years later they get a little bump in pay at work and they go out and buy another "fun" car.

I know this stuff not because I am so smart but because I was dumb and got caught up in it all several times when I was younger

Last year I sold the 1998 Nissan Sentra my late Dad left me for 2k.
The guy drives it daily.
Had 137k on it when I sold it to him.
Had several Mexican guys around the neighborhood always asking me if it was for sale for what that's worth.
It was a 5 speed and the air worked great.
It would religiously get 36 mpg.
I see those cars everywhere everyday here in Houston.
Nissan got that generation of Sentra right.

Around here just a little more than $2500 will get you a clean early model Expedition, a '90s model Cadillac, a 2005 Explorer or one of a bunch of other "For Sale By Owner" cars.  I think people are almost giving their old vehicles away since they've started getting their natural gas royalty checks.  Good deal for folks who aren't landowners getting that gas money.

I'm not sure what the market looks like in your state, OP, but you should be able to find a decent used vehicle for $2500. I picked up a 2003 Ford Explorer XLT with 67K miles for $1850 last month. I didn't need another vehicle but couldn't pass it up for that price, especially since it is in perfect condition and the owner had all the service records.

I see tons of Explorers for $2500 online. I know they aren't popular in GD but if it was in good shape I would drive one.

Hubs.  My wife's 2003 has gone through all four over the past three years.  Independent Rear Suspension is nice, but having those two additional hubs in back is two more hubs to go bad.

My Daily Driver is an E30 318is.     As long as you can keep it running yourself (and can wait for parts to ship in), they're good, reliable cars...they don't like deferred maintenance, though.     If you need it on the road every day (can't wait for parts)...then something else would be indicated...

2500 in work is going to be tough. This isnt something you can just ask
on the internet, you have to search for weeks months to find the one,
that is if you know what to look for...or get lucky.

personally
at that price I would get a BMW e30 coupe but only if you are
comfortable with your own repairs. They are simple and easy to work on
and a blast to drive, and still look cool.

See above. I paid $3200 for that car almost 10 years ago. It had 87K on it when I got it. I am picking up a 99 today for $2500, and giving my old car to someone who needs it.

I bought a one owner 98 accord DX 5 speed with 140K on it two years ago for $2500 cash.

I've replaced starter, rad, clutch and brakes.
Still runs good at 165K, has another 100K in it at least.

Such a good car it's gave me the confidence to buy a used one owner twin turbo BMW for my fun car.
