Started out reloading with a $25 Lee precision powder scale and I never upgraded it because it simply worked.  Earlier this year I dropped it and the beam broke, I purchased another and when I went to use it the other day the pointer had snapped off.

Honestly the only thing I reload right now and / or plan to in the near future is 9MM and 380.

Thoughts?  Was leaning Lyman.

Can I get away with a cheap hornady digital?

I think most are rebranded Ohaus scales.

Mine is an RCBS.

I’d buy a cheap used beam scale second hand personally.

I’d get a cheap beam over cheap digital.

There are lots of threads about cheap digital scales already. Thread from this forum/page

In fact, I would get a cheap beam over an expensive digital, even if the price was the same.

I bought my RCBS scale back when Jimmy Carter was president.  I haven't worn it out yet.

Yeah I’m surprised OP has broken 2.

ETA: OP maybe you can call Lee and have them warranty your broken scale?

Hornady beam scale is a great value and clear graduations on the beam.

I enjoy mine.

I have an RCBS scale that I've used off and on for close to 20 years, still going strong.  Though after I started to reload again recently after a long hiatus, I decided I wasn't happy with having to squat down every time to read the scale (get eyes on level with the graduations so there isn't any avoidable inaccuracy).  After loading 200 rds a few days ago, my quads were really feeling it.   A decent quality electronic scale that I wouldn't have to squat down would be really nice about now.

A long time ago, I lucked into an RCBS 10-10 scale, I still use it today, I have no desire to go to an electronic scale.

ETA. RCBS/Ohaus discounted making them, so ebay is the only way to get one nowadays.

I had ab RCBS branded 505, foolishly gave it away when I bought an RCBS branded 1010. I do not like the 1010 - nothing wrong with it, just don't like it. In my big reloading bonanza was an original new in box 1970s Ohaus branded 505 scale, and I am a very happy camper again. I had a Berry's electronic scale that was a PITA to keep zeroed - gave it to a pawn shop. Do NOT miss it one bit.

Cheap digital scales are junk and have a short lifespan. Mechanical beam scales will last your lifetime unless you drop them on cement. Buy some check weights and you'll have a foolproof system.

Interesting that it's the 505 and looks just like my rcbs 505 less the color.
Also $30 cheaper. Unbelievable

I'm still using my grandpas old Ohaus scale. No idea on its age but has to 50+ years old and has weighed thousands upon thousands of charges. Its still very accurate.

Amazon.  Lyman and rcbs both sell check weight kits.

I had a Lyman beam scale that was off, but I didn't know it for years.    The small .1 grain poise was off about 1/2 a grain as it got close to 5 grains on the small poise.  I.e. if the large poise was set on 70, it was fine, but if it was on 65 and the small poise was at 5, it was off 0.5 grain.

Yeah, I thought it was a 505 as well but I trusted the labelling on Amazon.  I use a Redding #2 (same capacity as a 505).

I use a 1960s vintage Lyman/Ohaus M5.  My dad's 1972 vintage ANIB RCBS/Ohaus 1010 is my spare, sitting on the top shelf in the closet.

I still have and use regularly my old RCBS 510 scale.

Not made anymore as far as I can tell. Works like a champ.

ETA: I really like the threaded portion for .1 increments.

@Blowout

If you are interested, I was able to fix the falling arm on my old RCBS with a 1/2" wave washer from Ace Hardware for like 80 cents. Works great.

Never knew it had one. Just changed it out with a 1/2" polyurethane washer and it doesn't drop now. Thanks for the suggestion!

Use my beams the most, old school, Lyman M5's, Ohaus 10-10's, RCBS 10-10's all made in the
USA. Some "tuned "by Scott Parker. Pick em up when I can and where I can, they pop-up at estate
sales, some times on forums. Have check weights (RCBS) to double check them. Also have 2 digitals
nothing to write home about. But a "beam" person.
