To mask odd shapes or small areas like letters you can coat it with rubber cement. Let the cement dry, paint, and then peel off the cement once the paint has dried a bit. Also a lot of stores are selling small bales of hay right now, which may give a more random effect than the uniform thickness of the broom straw. |

well i think im gonna jump on the pine straw band wagon. I wanted a scene for my beat up wasr10 and thanks to bjwar i have found one. im going with the darker look. ill be putting down OD as a base with tan and a bit of brown for the effect. thanks for the great camo idea bjwar. ill post pics as i go along BEFORE:

Wow! Looks awesome. How does it look in your AO? Any chance you could snap a pic of it in the woods/bush? I suspect we share some of the same foilage and wonder how good the pine-straw would work for the jungles/vegetation of Virginia as opposed to something like a RealTree, woodland camo, or Swedish M90 patern. |
Thx, I'll have to see if I can sneak out and get some pics in the near future. I technically live in "town", so the back yard won't cut it.  I'll see if I can grab some in the surounding area.

I think it turned out ok but I won't like it when it scratches so I think I will be ordering some Duracoat and redo it.

That might be kind of tough now that it is November but you might hang it in the oven on 100 degrees for several hours. |

I have an all black Remington 700SPS I might try painting. Remove the barrel/breach and just paint the stock. Definitely need to practice first; I've never been too good at painting.
I have seen Durocoat (sp?) mentioned several times in here. Is it anything special or just another brand of spray paint? |

Durabake OD green and Parker (grey) were used over a Coyote Brown base.

| I'm thinking of a 3 tone green camo. Forest green, dark green, and olive drab. Before buying the paint from Brownells do you think the colors are too close? I want something sutle but noticeable. Also does it matter which color is your basecoat, light or dark? |

I saw this thread and decided I just had to give it a try. Paint is Krylon Fusion Camouflage and I sprayed two layers of Krylon Matte Clear for a little bit of extra protection. I used the straw/needle sheddings from a neighbors tree. I have no idea what it is but it worked nicely. The needles made a mess of my desert landscaping so I was happy when he chopped it down a week or two ago but now I am not too sure. I didnt spend the time on it that you would if you really cared about the results because its just a 10/22 but I am shocked at how well it turned out. The camo pattern does a great job at hiding mistakes and shortcuts.
I thought some of the rifles posted here had too much brown for my liking so I tried for a 1 part black, 2 parts brown, and 4 parts olive combo. After the Khaki base coat I striped the rifle in the following order: 4-5 stripes brown, 7-8 stripes olive, a light olive mist over the whole thing, and then 3 stripes of black as a finishing touch. I varied my stripes in different directions across the length of the rifle and made a few V patterns close together so it wouldn't come out tiger striped and it worked great. I achieved my goal of not having the brown stand out but now I kinda wish there was more brown. Adding a few stripes of a lighter brown would really help. I might have to try that the next time. Any suggestions on what to use? |

Great job...I like the black splotches. Still waiting for it to cure completely before I do anything with it. I just finished paint last night. I am in the desert so I really need more light brown in the pattern for it to be effective. It should do pretty good up at my buddy's cabin in Utah though. This was just my first test on a rifle stock that needed some work so even though it won't work great in my area it was still an improvement over the beatup finish that was on the stock. I might take it calling with me this weekend but it likely won't do well in my area. I am going to have to experiment a bit more on a piece of 2x4 or something to find a color combo that works a little better for me. Once I get a little better and find my colors I will probably step up to Duracoat and do my AR. |

I got around to painting my cheapo chinese shotgun tonight, and here is what i ended up with (sorry about the cell phone pic, real cam died on me while I was on holidays)
oh, I used some random home depot rustoleum white, black, primer grey, and a bit of krylon camo olive. |

I've been on the fence for a couple of years about doing this on a rifle and this thread made me go for it! Thanks to the OP for the advice and for the pictures from everyone else.

Here is my Remington R-15 VTR.. Its already camo except for the barrel, buffer tube, and my scope and scope mount. Saw this thread and got a major hard on. Tried it yesterday. Not perfect but it'll work. The flash or the lighting in my room makes the colors look really off. Probably take these pics off and replace with some outdoor pics soon. Also did the matte clear coat. Great idea and thanks for the tutorial!

On the back side of the shell deflector thing, the camo job was rubbed off down to the original finish, so i just used some krylon to patch it up. |

I finally got done with the pinestraw camo job and the Duracoat clear on the 450 Bushmaster,

It didnt turn out bad at all, the pinestraw camo scheme is so very easy to do! |
