Matching bolt P14, no import or export marks, volleys intact, non-Weedon. Has some honest whacks to the wood, but I like em with character! Need to pull the wood and check the barrel, but she's a keeper. Edit: Pulled the wood, matching barrel!  Hard to see in the photo, but it's the correct fat boy stock. |

Picked up a minty 1944 dated M38. All matching, with a perfect bore (and no counterbore). I was looking for a good M38, and instead found a great one. A really sweet little rifle. |

Model 1898 Krag Rifle The fantastic rear sight with windage and elevation controls plus a flip up peep sight. It is my favorite sight other than the 1903A3 Sight.   M1903  The most horrible sight ever in my opinion. I hate it and wished Mojo made their mrico click peep sight for it. M1917  Fantastic sights. Only fault is it has no windage control. For all the years I've owned this rifle.... I never realized that it saw service as a British Home Guard Lend Lease. At some point in this rifle's history; the red band to distinguish it was removed. It still has traces of the red paint. I never noticed it until now.   She has her original Remington Barrel dated 2-18. Out of them all, I really think the Krag is the best in terms of being a competitive rifle for long distance shooting. I know folks love the M1903 sight, but in my opinion the M1905 sight is horrible. |

I keep forgetting, while i haven't taken any pictures of my M39 since i have bought it from Pat Burns. I do have the sale pics! I bought this rifle from her almost a year before she sold them all to classic firearms. I was heart broken when i found out as i wanted to atleast get one more D marked from her. This is my one and only C&R type gun i have.

Got this one last week, a good non-military C&R rifle, designed by none other than John Moses Browning himself!
Oops, I broke it! 
This one is in .35 Remington, which seems to be the most popular cartridge. It was made in 1946, the year my dad was born! (Correction - this one was made in 1947. The date code on the barrel jacket indicates June 1947, and the serial number list I found, I read incorrectly) I ended up buying another in .300 Savage that should probably get in this week. I'll be getting more detailed pictures and will do a write up in GD, probably. These are really interesting and cool rifles. I'm glad I could find a couple I like. |

Got my second Model 81 home today. This one is a January 1945 manufactured, and as you can see, has a nice aperture sight on the receiver. It's a Redfield model, and does have a drilled/tapped hole for it, as well as using the OEM tang screw. Remington appeared to have foresight enough to include a screw at the back of the receiver specifically for mounting aftermarket sights. I noticed the sight was a little loose, and that the bolt wouldn't stay open automatically. Ventured into my first Model 81 disassembly this morning. First thing I noticed... this rifle is ABSOLUTELY FILTHY inside! I'm going to have to get a can of gun scrubber and do a job on it. It's bad. Second, nothing is broken. It just appears that a little bulge/dent in the top of the magazine is preventing the rear of the follower from coming up all the way and engaging the bolt stop. I put it all back together, and the stinking bolt was locking to the rear before I could get the bolt spring back in. WTF? Took me a little bit to figure that out. Without the barrel assembly mounted, the operating mechanism will lock the bolt to the rear. It does this in recoil so that the barrel can return fully, which releases the bolt. The little catch was grabbing the bolt because the barrel wasn't stopping it from doing so. You can see in this quick video how it operates:  Failed To Load Title The barrel and bolt are locked together, and both move to the rear under recoil, just a little further back than the length of a cartridge, or the magazine. The bolt carrier gets locked to the rear, and the barrel starts to rebound forward, pulling the bolt which is cammed and unlocked, then the barrel returns to battery. Once the barrel is fully forward, the bolt carrier is released and returns forward, chambering the next round. |

Just snagged this S&W US Army Model 1917 for the unbelievable price of $500.
She's in super tight mechanical condition, the finish is amazing for a 100 year old wheel gun, she didn't go through a re-arsenal, all the WWI acceptance stamps are crisp and clear. Not one of my usual humble brag threads of where I rob the evidence locker but I think I did well. |
