The big bad BUIS FAQ (Page 1 updated on 8/4/2006) (Page 7 of 9)
| Are there any accuracy concerns for a folding front sight whether it is in tower format (such as the YHM gas block folding front sight) vs. a rail mounted folding front sight on a FF forearm? Even the slightest amount of "wobble" in a FF setup would effect your accuracy. Are the FF from lower end manufacturers (i.e. YHM) just as sturdy as the higher quality manufacturers (i.e. DD) for rail mounted front sight placement? |
I think the newer ones do. If your looking for the Low Profile, they also have an "SP"= same plane. A.R.M.S. |

I have an Eotech 511 mounted directly to the upper receiver on my AR. Any issues with obstructing the FOV with the Midwest Industries BUIS? I had a few things I wanted to purchase and Bravo Company has the MI BUIS and a low profile MI BUIS. (that way I can only pay shipping once) Any reason to go with the low profile to anyone's knowledge? Bravo Company also has the Troy which always gets high marks, but I was trying to maintain a budget and the MI can be had for under $100. The low profile kicks it up to around $120 and then the Troy steps it up a little further. This thread is a wealth of information, just wanted to see if there was any first hand knowledge on the two MI models. Thanks. |

I'm going to ask a question that might be asinine but I'm not currently nor have I ever been an AR15 owner so it's not obvious to me (I'm looking to join and trying to make sure I don't make any mistakes.) If I read the first post on this thread right if I have a standard issue front sight on a rifle with a flattop receiver (like the A3 upper model 1 sales has here http://www.model1sales.com/item-detail.cfm?ID=UCE160&storeid=1&image=u16carpre.gif ) And I mount an optics to the rail I shouldn't have any issues with the front sight being in the way? The optics in question was this NCstar thing I found for cheap at a gun show this weekend I was thinking might be a good addition when I finally pony up the money for a rifle. I'm mainly trying to discern if I should get a flip-up front sight on my upper when I go for it or not because I don't have the tools to remove it after the fact. |
| I've got a silly question for you all...i've got my Rock River M4 with a Wilson FURS and a new EoTech 512 that I haven't zeroed yet. The Wilson sight has elevation adjustment, so to achieve an accurate 25m IBZ, should I adjust the Wilson flip sight, or adjust the front sight post for correct elevation? Once I get that set, i'll just lolli-pop the EoTech reticle on the front post. Thanks guys! |
Elavation zeroing should be done on the Front Sight if possible. This will usually require the use of a tool. Once it is adjusted properly, all elavation changes while shooting can and should be made my hand & using the rear sight. |
I agree with many points of what you are saying here but as of right now I am almost finished with my A3 AR15 and really want to shoot it. I really want an Optic for my rifle but until I can afford the sight I want I need a set of iron sights to use. I picked up an A.R.M.S. 40L at Peabody Sports and it will do what I need it to until I can convince my wife I need to get an ACOG. |
|
Looking for some front and back back up iron sights for a build and was curious if anyone knew of any that come in flat dark earth BESIDES Troy Industries. I like the Troy's, I'm just trying to keep my options open. I'd like something that I can swap out the rear aperture of and put in one with tritium dots or a competition aperture with smaller holes. Can't do that with the Troy since it's a proprietary aperture. Thanks guys! |

An answer for a pg1 question; Young mfg is "hiding" under the name of "ferndale mfg" and does have a website under that name, tho it's slim pickens. There is a distributor in Wa st. For the most part a contract mfgr, they don't seem too intersested in retail sales, but are happy to accomidate if you give them a call. Nice Folks. KAC; sometimes seems as tho they don't care to sell anything, but give a call...as above. |

I was wondering if anybody else has had a problem with the Midwest Industries BUIS not being able to lock in the down position when the small aperture is in place. It goes all of the way down when the large hole aperture is in place, but not with the small one. I can't inagine that it was intentionally designed like this, but I guess anything is possible. I had a GG&G MAD installed but wanted to get something that would allow me to use a set of tritium sights. I'm thinking I should have gone with the Larue as originally planned, but I let a few bucks spoil my decision. I'm including a pic so folks can see what I'm talking about. The sight is installed in the rear-most position on the upper, so that's not the issue.hinking.gif http://home.comcast.net/~tractiongrips/images/Tractiongrips%20Web/MI.jpg |
If you're interested in one that doesn't, the Yankee Hill sight is a good choice.
In a pinch, you can use a bullet tip instead of the proper tool. I've even used the can opener tip of my Swiss Army knife -- not ideal, though. The tool is indeed the best way to do it. |

anyone tried GG&G A2 Spring Actuated BUIS Back Up Iron Sight with Locking Mechanical Detent? http://www.gggaz.com/uploaded_images/Spring%20Act%20BUIS/A2SpringActCollage.jpg |
| I wish they sold them for a ok price.. but im gonna try and contact Troy ind agian.. they owe me like 50 bucks for shipping after sending me 2 bad rails and the money i paid to send them back and i was told when they get new rails in they would send me a new one.. i really dont know what is up with them im gonan give them a call and see if i cant just get a rear BUIS since they are not giving me my money back and then I wont have to worry about it cuz they BSed me like 3 times now and I have been out of town the one guy i thot was the only good guy there f'ed me over to.. |
| I have a ARMS 40L with my standard front sight. I know of a good deal on a Aimpoint comp c 2X. Will this work with BUIS system? The original post wasn't clear about magnification for your red dot sight??? Can you clarify please... Thanks! Also can you recommend a good optic for my setup with a CAR A4... |
Most of the rear BUIS units are designed to work with the standard front sight tower and are, therefore, the same height as the original A2 sight. Most front BUIS units are designed to place the sight at the same height as the original front sight tower does... Thus, it's not so much a question of the BUIS units as of the way that the optic is mounted... If an Eotech or an Aimpoint CompM2, for example, is mounted directly on the flattop receiver, the optic and the BUIS will co-witness... However, many people like to mount the optic slightly higher, especially if they are using the original front sight tower and not a front flip sight, so that the front sight tower is seen in the lower portion of the optic... Personally, I like the BUIS sights to cowitness with the Eotech or Aimpoint optic sight, but I also use a front flip-sight to keep the optic clear of the iron sights unless I need to flip up the sights for some reason (failure of the optic sight, for example). Having said that, I've never had an Eotech 512 or Aimpoint CompM2 fail... For what it's worth... Forrest |

Does anyone happen to have the heights on folding BUIS systems in the down position? I'm looking for one that will fit easily under my aimpoint mag. Shouldn't be a probably but just checking. The clearance on mine from the top of the rail, to the bottom of the mag is .729" Thanks in advance, Zach |
From Pg2 of Lancelot's review of the MI SPLP BUIS: New folding BUIS from MI Here are some popular BUIS heights to compare to: ARMS 40 - 0.950" folded (mine is 1.00" even) YHM-9680 - 0.840" folded (mine is 0.850") Matech - 0.75" folded MI ERS - 0.750" folded ARMS 40L - 0.610" folded Troy - 0.460" folded MI MCTAR-SPLP - .4375" folded

Thanks for presenting this here... Forrest |
Thanks Condition 1, that's exactly what I was looking for, I appreciate it. Zach |

Ok I'm new to the whole BUIS concept. I just bought a Millet DMS scope with a LaRue SPR-E mount for my Bushmaster AR15 with a fixed front iron sight. After going to Bushmasters webpage, the only BUIS sights I found required a higher front sight to match the rear. Does anyone know which BUIS rear sight would allow me to co-witness with my Millet DMS scope on a LaRue SPR-E mount? |
I noticed the same thing with the Midwest yesterday, I didn't buy it because of the wiggle. Happy with my new Matech. |

A question on BUIS, specifically the Troy Industries flip up rear sight. http://www.troyind.com/rear.html My only experience with irons is from the detachable carry handle style rear sight mounted on an M16A4 / M4. On the 0-300m peephole setting, it is concave where you look through, and flat on the other side. But on the Troy Ind rear, it's...I guess I'm trying to say backwards? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/coletam/Noveske/Noveske27.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/coletam/Noveske/Noveske28.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/coletam/Noveske/Noveske29.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/coletam/Noveske/Noveske30.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/coletam/Noveske/Noveske31.jpg Is this a problem? |

That should give you the 1/3 co-witness. That little rail on the LT mount behind the Eotech is for a 3/4x magnifyer. |

I have used or tested many of them, and have mixed opinions.
Folders: Knights- crap. (both versions)- the old one, aperture falls out, the new one the dovetail breaks ARMS- crap. ARMS products are made with inferior castings, the tension in the springs wears out, overpriced GG&G- good quality, overpriced and poor customer service. Midwest- good quality, great value, almost the same as GG&G Fixed: LMT- great quality, but pricey Larue- excellent quality, cant speak for price as mine was free(issued) dont know what they cost. Excellent customer service |

Some new guy is selling this on the EE...
Troy made Diamond Head BUIS. Any input. It looks like a great new idea for rear sights... http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=22&t=616766

I have to say it sure seemed like it was faster to acquire a target with it, very natural feeling. I was disappointed that they only had plans to make it for the Troy BUIS and not as a replacement for a standard A2 peep. I have to agree with one of the previous posters about Troy peeps having the concave 'backward'. Many, or possibly most, of the BUIS Mfg out there mount them that direction for some reason, but I've always thought that the purpose of the dish is to darken the area around the peep to make it stand out better (like serrations). I just reversed my Cav fixed BUIS, first by mounting it backward, then later by removing the peep and reversing it instead (to keep adjustments the same as a standard sight). |
Also...I can kill you with my brain.

I just received my SPLP folding rear BUIS by MI and that was the first thing I noticed was quite a bit of slop in the up/deployed position. Im concerned about zero repeatablility and am not sure how much testing I want to do with it before I make up my mindto send it back or keep it. I have played with Yankee Hill Machine rear sights and GGG rear sights, they bothlocked up like a bank vault. I bought a YHM folding front sight and couldnt be happier, but I really wanted a low profile sight because of the accessibility to the eotech buttons that it is backing up and MI had thelowest profile at a good price.
I emailed them and ask them if it was normal, so far they have replied that they build them that way and its normal because they will get loose over time with use and bumping them around just like the other sight makers' do. Im not sure if I wanted something with 5 years of wear already built into it. I guess I need to take it to the range and do some repeatability drills with it. I would have purchased something like the Matech, but I need both aperture's for the option of low light shooting. |

Yeah, "they get loose over time so we just build them loose to begin with" does sound like a pretty crappy response... Just sayin'... Forrest |
