The big bad BUIS FAQ (Page 1 updated on 8/4/2006) (Page 8 of 9)
| Received my Troy rear sight today. I didnt even have to put it on the rifle to know that I was VERY HAPPY with it. After I mounted it all I could do is smile. Cant believe I almost settled for that other one. The Troy is worth every penny. I tried to save a little money because I have stretched myself a little thin on this project, but If I was building another rifle, I would just order the Troy up front, very solid, very nice machining and rock solid. |

I enjoyed reading opinions about various BUIS options. But sometimes we tend to get all involved in expensive solutions to simple problems. I can't help but wonder if there isn't some very inexpensive "stock" uint out there. I have an EOTech sight. I really don't need to spend a lot on exotic BUIS equipment. In fact I tend to agree with those that hold that shooting a lot of practice rounds is probably more effective for improving accuracy than throwing money at sights.
What do you suggest as the stock solution? Steve |

This is by design. Since the flip mechanism is on the windage screw, flipping it up or down moves the sight blade assembly on the screw threads, shifting it right or left. They pick one aperture to be centered (the large one in this case), then offset the other one by 1/4 turn of the thread so it's also centered for windage when it's flipped.

I simply replaced the A2 reticle with a same plane aperture from XS sights which I had in the parts bin. You can also order them from Larue with this same aperture as well for extra...highly recommended so your zero stays the same since this is a "A1" style sight. I also like the fact the "inside" of the sight body is milled out from underneath for greater weight savings as opposed to having some solid block sitting on top of your rifle. You wouldn't know this from the factory pics. Little details like this really make the people at Larue stand out! I am using this as a stand alone sight on my KISS rifle. Other than that...stick with Troy if you want a fold down. |

I'm trying to figure out what rear BUIS is going to be compatible with the Armalite AR10 .308 fixed front BUIS. I have it mounted on a standard AR10ap4 with the stock flat top upper and furniture. I guess i'm just concerned about a height difference between the two sights if one is gonna be made by Armalite for .308 and I get something like a GG&G MAD?
So will this on a .308 AP4 http://www.armalite.com/ItemForm.aspx?item=EA5045&ReturnUrl=Categories2.aspx?Category=a14c8168-f1cf-4f11-8859-bafe17a66e1e work with this http://www.securityprousa.com/madbubupirsi.html ? Thanks guys |

Saw some links to my older list of BUIS heights in another thread.
Here's the latest collection, including some changes for ones that are lower in the center than on the edges, which affects scope mount height. –––––––––––– Here are some popular BUIS heights: ARMS 40 - 0.95" folded (mine is 1.00" even) YHM-9680 - 0.84" to the top of the windage knob, 0.74" to the top of the sight body Matech - 0.75" folded at the elevation adjustment, off to the side, 0.6" closer to center MI ERS - 0.75" folded GG&G MAD - 0.625" folded Magpul MBUS - 0.625" folded (not verified) ARMS 40L - 0.61" folded (mine is 0.59") Troy - 0.460" folded MI MCTAR-SPLP - .438" folded YHM QDS - 0.435" folded KAC 300m - 0.315" folded Here's how to figure out if it will fit under your scope and mount. - Measure the scope's eyepiece diameter, with flip caps if you're going to use them. Butler Creek usually adds about 0.1" to the diameter. If the scope's going far enough back so the eyepiece isn't over the BUIS, measure the diameter where it is over the BUIS. - Divide that by 2. - Subtract that from the centerline height of your mount or rings. This gives the maximum height BUIS that will fit under that scope/mount combo. Some BUIS have a higher knob or adjustment on the side, and some scopes will clear at the center, but hit off to the side. It's hard to tell if this will be a problem without trying it out. For example, my Leupold VX1 4-12x40 eyepiece diameter is 1.7" with flip caps - divided by 2 gives 0.85". Mounting it in a 1" LaRue LT-104, which has a 1.41" centerline, would leave (1.41-0.85) = 0.56 as the tallest BUIS that would fit. As you can see from the list below, that leaves out many. This is one reason the Troy BUIS is so popular. |

I asked a local sight manufacturing company and they said that the tritium capsules are speccifically made for the shallow depth of the rear aperature. Whereas handgun and shotgun sights use 90% same tritium capsules due to the flexibility of milling and machining options. Troy is working on their night sites now, so I'll ask our rep if we can get some aperatures with tritium seperate from the complete sights Cliff @ GTG |

Any info would be helpful. Thanks. Since Tritium is radioactive, and that's what's giving off the glow (they aren't something that you "charge" and then dims over time) you should get a reasonable amount of time on them. Otherwise, they're Troy sights. |

Does anyone have the ability to update the original post? A lot of the pic links are dead and there are additions to this category. It would be nice to to have current pics with a weight and holded hieght chart put there on the current crop of BUIS.
PS Did anyone ever obtain and comment on the Wilson Arms folding rear sight? With elevation adjusment, it looks like a good candidate for a .308/7.62 AR platform rifle. |

I had a GG&G MAD installed but wanted to get something that would allow me to use a set of tritium sights. I'm thinking I should have gone with the Larue as originally planned, but I let a few bucks spoil my decision. I'm including a pic so folks can see what I'm talking about. The sight is installed in the rear-most position on the upper, so that's not the issue.
http://home.comcast.net/~tractiongrips/images/Tractiongrips%20Web/MI.jpg They do not fold down in that configuration. Very few if any folding sights do. They are not meant to. |

I was leaning towards the TMS, however, I went with a Matech at $55, should be in soon. I'll see how it works out. |

I have noticed that Magpul also has a pair of "iron" sights (theyre actually polymer). anyone have experience with these?
im looking for something a little lower priced than a lot of these sights. while im sure theyre really nice, i just cant pay $100+ for a single sight, let alone more than $200 for a pair, so if anyone wants to clue me in, id really appreciate it. |
| I was hoping someone could give me some feed back. I just purchased a GG&G 1005 buis how do I zero it .The rifle was already t zeroed with the detachable carry handle i removed. Should I raise or lower elevation on front sight post ? Thanks a bunch for your time. I currently have a dpms ap4 223 i removed the carry handle and added the eotech 511 along with this gg&g 1005 buis. When I compared the carry handle to the buis the buis seems taller. I went to the range and zeroed eotech first no problem but when I used buis I couldnt see where I was hitting. I should of changed targets but The range was crowded and I was pressed for time I only had an hour. I just need some guidance a starting point in wich direction to go. Thanks again I know its probably a dumb question |
