chrome chamber barrel indicates late 60s

The upper is definitely not a 602, the 602 had the directional arrows engraved in it, also it would have been a square forge and rebated lug.

I was just looking at my pics.  The bolt carrier pic that is not chrome is one I was using as a guide to see how the key was staked.  sorry if this caused some confusion.  Now that I know it is not a 601 receiver from the below post what do yo think it is?

604, barrel is late 60's, can't see other side of front lug but guess it would be rebated.

Early 604.

You could get $1000-1200 if you wait long enough.

Not an early, but a Mid 604. Early 604s were basically 602s, just with slightly later parts. Early 604s had M VP 12 barrels.

If it left the factory with that improved 3-prong and the triangle charging handle (which seems too early, considering the other later features) then it would've also had an Edgewater buffer, and a receiver extension without flats on the back. Those 2 MWOs were retrofitted onto existing rifles still in service.

It is my understanding that a factory-installed three prong flash hider and a barrel with chrome anything were mutually exclusive.

A C MP C barrel on a U.S. Property rifle would have originally been equipped with a birdcage flash hider.

As we say in retro... anything is possible, but I doubt that the kit is completely original. Chrome lined carrier is another thing that throws me off.

So should I part this out?  I wanted to put together an old school 1960s  vintage rifle.  I suppose I can get a different carrier and flash hider and still put it together???

The service that is still using their original 601 lowers and any other part that was ever installed on an issue AR?

I'd just build what you have on a partial fence lower and call it a day, well I'd probably sell/trade the triangle charging handle and replace it with the later design.

Build it.  Put the charging handle away and get a new one.

Shoot it.  Love it.  Make babies with it.

Well, maybe not babies.

If you want to build a completely accurate "1969-ish, USGI clone" with the majority of your parts, all you would need is a standard M16A1 birdcage flash hider, a standard "T-shaped" charging handle  and a standard M16A1 "serrated" (bolt forward assist type) parkerized bolt carrier. Then, just build it up on an A1, full-fence lower receiver of your choosing.

I'm sure that you'd give it a good home. The other option for the O.P. would be to use that charging handle as the first piece of their 601 build.

Ahh yes. The ‘ol “I have a 601 front piviot pin so now I have to build a whole rifle” argument one gives oneself lol. Im guilty of it myself, just a different part.
