I drive around a lot for work and stop any little gun shops/pawn shops along the way. Today was fruitful! I got me a 6420 for what I’d say is a decent deal.

I know for fact the grip(LSO Stoaway)and flash hider aren’t correct. Thinking the hand-guard may not be and the barrel is puzzling. No usual colt marking where I’ve seen em. Anyway here she is. Any info you have would be appreciated. I know the serial lines up with 85’ ish.

Bubba definitely got started on that one but it's still worth saving. A call to Colt with the serial number may get you the original configuration. The lack of markings and flat slip ring make me suspect that the barrel assembly is incorrect and a 6420 should have a collapsible stock, so it may have started as a 20" rifle that someone put a carbine barrel on.

If it's an original Sporter 2, it should have a 1/7 twist barrel and a square front sight post.

Just at a glance, looks like stock assy, handguards, grip, flash hider and charging handle have all been swapped out.

Barrel looks right, at least FSB is C and Bell marked which is correct for the vintage. Barrel should be marked C MP 556 NATO 1/7 on top toward muzzle end.

I was kinda thinking that too buuuuut. I’ve only ever seen one other uo close before. Three years ago at the gf’s apt complex lived an older McAllen police officer. He would get off his Tahoe everyday with his issued 6420 and his too had a slip ring not a delta ring. Also spent most of the afternoon looking as 6420s all have a slip ring.

6420’s are one of the most varied of the Colt carbines. Could have A1, C7 or A2 upper, slip ring or delta ring, teardrop or large round forward assist, SP1 type BCG or half moon carrier. A lot of changes though the ‘80’s, phasing out A1 parts and phasing in A2.

Source some original furniture (N1 fiberlite CAR stock, 2 position gray buffer tube, lock ring, end plate, Colt 6 hole handguards, Colt A2 pistol grip), a gray Colt charging handle and A2 flash hider with peel washer and its back to factory configuration. Probably $400-$450 and some diligent searching and patience will get you there.

You are correct sir. I was referencing the 85-86 run with the a1 upper and slip ring.
This old post from 2015 on another form showed a 6420 only 14 digits younger than mine. As you can see in it it’s got a much later m4 extension and stock. Kinda got me thinking that maybe some did come with a2s that were swapped or maybe someone knew the value of the aluminum stocks and pulled em.

I need to get it apart. Get the all the parts and get it right.

What's the deal with the orange rings on that 3 Prong? OP, wish I had another LSO grip for a MK18 clone I'm building...you could always sell me that one.

Interesting, I've been shooting AR's with and without 3 prongs for 20 years and never notice the difference with my headphones on.

Ready for "holy shit it's a small, weird world" time?  If that S/N is 313345 I used to own that rifle. It had a N/1 CAR stock and A2 FH on it when I had it over 20 years ago in Pennsylvania.

If that’s the case then it was right next to OP’s on the assembly line. Still cool.

Called colt.

It is indeed a 6420 made in 1985.

A very nice find. You should try to rework it back to its original specification. But I like the full stock set-up.

Saving it should pay up in good karma for sure.

2 pos grey tube, xm177 nut, Specialized armament large push pin on the way for now. Can’t seem to find a grey endplate or charging handle. I have a colt skinny handguard set but someone had painted em tan. Think I can clean em up though.

Ok so thanks to mike I have every part to get it back to factory. As much as I like this thing. I’m very seriously considering fixing a 14.5” barrel with extended a2 and even goin shorter with a p/w faux moderator from brownells.
If I did go either direction how much would this hurt the value?

Honestly it would probably bump at least a few hundred off the value, maybe more. Original barrel is pretty important for a preban Colt. Personally I’d leave it but ultimately up to you.
