RadOP nailed my "technique" pretty well. All I did was spray a base coat of tan, then go back over it with brown in diagonal "stripes." Then, while it was still wet, I broke it up a little with the tan again, and "dusted" it at varying heights, and "pass" speeds, to get different feelings of "depth." I went back and forth a couple of times with a little bit of brown and tan until I got the desired effect. Once I was satisfied with one side, I just flipped it over, and re-did the other side. Beyond that, my only other suggestion is to use light coats and multiple passes, particularly when using masking tape, to prevent seepage and raised "ridges" where the paint builds up. The only modification to most MK 12 lowers over the M16A1 is the installation of a two-stage trigger assembly. I don't think too many of the Retro nuts would complain that you used a KAC 2-stage or Geissele SSA in your M16A1 build. Bonus points for using the Geissele because you'll have "dimpled" FCG pins! I haven't even finished my MOD 0 yet, and I've already started thinking that it might be pretty cool to have a MOD 1 upper to go along with it... Won't be affording that for quite a while, though. In the meantime, the MOD 0 went out yesterday, nothing too spectacular, just popping 6" clays at 100 yds with the ACOG, but lots of fun. ~Augee |

~Augee View Quote Minus points for having dimpled hammer/trigger pins on the a1 ; they were only used on the 601. I agree with the idea of building both... you're halfway there with the lower so why not? I almost posted a pic of my Mk12, 603, and 604 together in response of his post. I wanted to say thanks to Augee for giving me the idea to put this post together.
I have always had an interest in the early SPR/MK12 Mod0 and been fortunate enough to accumulate some of the more difficult to find parts. I thought it might be useful to show a side by side comparison of the various generations of Precision Reflex Inc. products used on the rifle and give a brief description of the product. TO BEGIN The first picture shows everything together. The top three pictured are the earlier versions of the MK12 Mod0 using the original PRI forearms and wheeled front sight bases, while the bottom one pictured is the "Mod Holland" version using a Gen III PRI forearm. PRI Gen1, PRI Gen2 Variation, PRI Gen2 and PRI Gen3 Attached File Three generations of PRI Carbon Fiber Free Floating Forend are next pictured below, each with their corresponding flip up front sight. The Gen1 and Gen2 are a similar in appearance, each using a standard size threaded barrel nut, a locking collar and a "straight" profile free floating carbon fiber tube. The Gen3 is noticeable different than the first two generations, due to a larger barrel nut and retaining collar. The differences between individual generations will be shown later in the post. PRI Gen1 (top), PRI Gen2 (middle), PRI Gen3 (bottom) Attached File GENERATION I and GENERATION II The Gen1 and Gen2 forearm use the same style threaded barrel nut and locking collar. One major difference between the two generations is the diameter of the carbon fiber tube, the Gen1 tube roughly measures 2-3/16" while the Gen2 tube measure in at 2". The sides of the Gen1 forearm lack any additional holes to accommodate longer rails while the Gen2 forearm has them. A quick identifying feature of the Gen1 forearm is the additional set of holes at the 5 and 7 o-clock position at the rear of the forearm, and the lack of a heatsheild. Pictured below are good examples to show the differences in not only the Gen1 and Gen2 but also two versions of the A.R.M.S. #38. Although both rails are marked "A.R.M.S. #38 SPR MOD Swan Sleeve Cal 5.56", it can be seen that the location of the logo is slightly different. The most notable difference between the two swan sleeves is the top rail spacing. PRI Gen1 (top) and PRI Gen2 (bottom) Attached File GENERATION I The Gen1 forearm disassembled into its major components. PRI Gen1 dissembled (side) Attached File The top view of the disassembled forearm shows the two piece top attachment rail for the A.R.M.S. #38 SPR MOD swan sleeve. If you look through the bottom set of holes on the forearm, the lack of a heatsheild can be seen. PRI Gen1 disassembled (top) Attached File While looking through the archives, I found a post from a member back in 2004. He had a Gen1 that came from the first run of the forearm, the carbon fiber tube was oversize by .030". This required the modification of the A.R.M.S. #38 rail to fit the larger radius of the tube. I thought that was kind of interesting, I had never heard that before. PRI Gen1 slightly oversize with A.R.M.S. rail cut to fit the larger radius (for comparison, normal rail top and fit rail bottom) Attached File GENERATION II The Gen2 forearm shown shares the same threaded barrel nut and locking collar as Gen1, the heatsheild and the addition of the rail mounting holes running along the side can clearly be seen too. A feature that the Gen2 shares with the Gen3 is a 8.5" top attachment rail used to attach the A.R.M.S. #38 rail to the carbon fiber tube. PRI Gen2 (side) Attached File GENERATION II Variation A variation of the early rail that has features found on both the Gen1 and the Gen2, possibly an "old new stock" Gen1 tube that was modified with Gen2 features prior to leaving the factory. The upper now belongs to member secretwheelman. GERERATION I and GENERATION III Since the Gen1 and the Gen2 are similar, I thought I would show a couple photos comparing the Gen1 and Gen3 forearm. The side view and the top view both show the difference in profile and the redesign of barrel nut and retaining collar of the Gen3. Although it is probably hard to tell from the photo, the diameter of the Gen1 carbon fiber tube is about 3/16" larger than that of the Gen3. PRI Gen1 and PRI Gen3 (side) Attached File The top view shows the difference in the way the A.R.M.S. #38 rail attaches to the carbon fiber tube. The Gen1 has two small rails each with a threaded hold while the Gen3 uses an 8.5" rail with threaded steel bushings. PRI Gen1 and PRI Gen3 (top) Attached File Finally, the two generations of forearms disassembled to show their major components. PRI Gen1 and PRI Gen3 (disassembled) Attached File A.R.M.S. #38 SPR MOD SWAN SLEEVE Atlantic Research Marketing Systems made three versions of the A.R.M.S. #38 SPR MOD rail for the Gen1/2 forearm. Two of the three versions are pictured below, not shown is the peq2 version. The end of the missing peq2 version has a similar shape to the end of the A.R.M.S. #38 peq2-3. A.R.M.S. #38 SPR MOD (top) Attached File Two generational versions of the swan sleeve are shown below, the A.R.M.S. #38 peq2-3 rail for the PRI Gen3 and the ARMS #38 SPR MOD rail for the PRI Gen1/2. The redesign of the Gen3's larger barrel nut and retaining collar are responsible for the stepped notch being necessary for use of the rail with the Gen3 forearm. A.R.M.S. #38 peq 2-3 (top) and A.R.M.S. #38 SPR MOD (bottom) Attached File FLIP UP FRONT SIGHT BASE The PRI flip up front sight bases pictured below were used with the SPR and the MK12 Mod0 . The Gen1 sight with an elevation wheeled front sight was found on the SPR while the current version of the sight was used on the MK12 Mod0 . They are similar in design, both use four set screw to attach the sight to the barrel but are slightly dimensionally different. Current flip up front sight base (top) and Gen1 "wheeled" front sight base (bottom) Attached File top (different addresses) Attached File side (closed) Attached File side (open) Attached File Thanks for looking and hope this helps Pics added back in on 5/21 and to add, for a time I owned one of the PRI buy back uppers. It now belongs to member here. High quality pics have been post by LC detailing the parts. I thought I would add one of the bcg and ch. Photo from the original Gun Gallery Inc sales add Attached File BCG and CH Attached File Complete gun along with a Holland clone Attached File |

I had an a1 grip on it with the a1 lower , but figured with the a2 I could get away with something a little more pleasant for my big mitts. When I get my hands on a black a1 lower it'll be back to an a1 grip. Still debating the glass. I want it to be perfect, but I may also consider deviating with a viper 2.5-10x32 ffp. Probably will come down to what pops up when I have the money in hand. I'm somewhat impulsive. |

I don't want to be "that guy" that referenced an ad that led to a bunch of people getting ripped off and I know y'all don't want to get ripped off.
So, please make sure the rails are legit. I didn't look into it myself as I'm working towards a Mod0, but there are plenty of close fakes out there when it comes to KAC rails. I've been looking for an MRE rail for some time and must've come across 20 fakes before I finally scored a real one last week Make sure the phone number, part number, marking font type, and barrel nut all match up with the real deal KAC.
