If you have a 14.5 in barrel pinned to 16in , why just not get a 16in in the first place? If it makes it the same length? Someone please enlighten me.
Because it's not the same length.
A 16" barrel with flash hider exceeds 17" in length. I, and many others, notice the extra 1" when maneuvering tight quarters. For me, a 14.5 pinned to 16 just balances and handles better. While there is a decrease in velocity, it's not enough to make an appreciable difference in performance, as evidenced by the large number of 14.5" barreled carbines in use by Uncle Sam. Finally, a 16" carbine barrel, to my eyes, just looks wrong. |
i think the extended muzzle devices on most 14.5 ar's look strange.

See if you prefer the ergonomics, you may just decide to go with the thread protector or buy/build a new rifle. Converter an existing 16" it not very economical unless your 16" upper has a high resale value. |

Ok... My bad. Most folks I know use 14.5 generically, not precisely. I assumed you thought all barrels less than 16" necessarily came with FH longer than A2 |

It should come out to 16-16.1 but there are a few companys making them now so i cant be sure if one could go up to 16.2 or something. |

It was a custom mod done by Randall at AR15barrels.com back when he was a reliable barrel smith - but it's not difficult to do, you just use two A2 flash suppressors and cut the "nut" with the wrench flats of an second A2 comp and have them timed together and pinned. A cheap and easy way to do it if you have extra A2 comps without having to buy an expensive extended muzzle device that doesn't look too "out of place." ~Augee |

I like being able to use BFAs as well - the KAC M4QD comp can be used with a spacer and mount a BFA as well, and I suspect (though I haven't personally tried it) that the Micor pictured a couple pages back should be able to as well - especially if it's an NT4 compatible mount. ~Augee |
