Saw a P226R at a local dealer for $461 OTD.  Looks to be in good condition, some wear on the finish, probably 85-90%.  I don't really know what to look for on Sigs.  All I know is it looks like a good deal on the surface, and with Sig's custom shop service package, it's still less than a new one.  Everything functions mechanically, at least as far as I can check without firing it.

Is it a "buy it now"?  What should I look for?  I don't care for the rail, but could get used to it if the price is right.

Thanks

450-550$ is the going rate for a used p Series around here so that is a fair price. Did you notice if it had a stamped or milled slide?

The milled slide will have an external extractor

Another thing to watch for is the mud rails they are few and far between but show up from time to time. The way to id these is to remove the slide and look at the rails they will have scallops cut into them in a few places on each side IIRC if it has mud rails Id probably skip it they are prone to failure I think they were made in the mid 80's IIRC.

It's an R––it will not have mud rails or a rolled slide.

You need to get a feel for the trigger––make sure it is smooth.  If there are cosmetic issues, make sure you can live with them.  Refinishing is expensive!

There is a thread here by Max229 about how to guestimate round count.

There is a thread at SigForum about how to determine age by serial if the original box or date sticker is missing.

If it has nightsights, and they are bright, I would not go for Sig's service package.  The thing that makes that worth it is the nightsight replacement.  You can buy a P226 parts kit from Top Gun Supply for $25 IIRC, that has all the springs you would want to replace in a high round count gun (or just for peace of mind).

Bruce Gray has the best black guide rods I've seen if it has a plastic or hollow one and you want ot replace it.

Given what I have seen on GB.com and in local shops in CO, I think that is a good OTD price assuming it comes with a couple mags...

Thanks.  It comes with two high cap mags.  I'll swing by and check it out more closely if they're open today.

Sounds good to me..I can never find good deals on pistols.

You'll love the P226...Best shooter I've ever owned. Sweetness and perfection, can't beat it.

I remember when I got an H&K and fell in love with them for a few years...I always thought Sig owners were just drinking kool-aid. I had shot a few Sigs anf thought,"they're nice but I don't need one".

Now about 15 years later..I own one and will get another this Spring. The smoothness is amazing..I was comparing it to my 1911 as far as how I liked the way it rest in hand. But when you shoot a Sig, you gotta say they shoot soooo nice.
