I recently picked up a brand new marlin 336 for $300 about a month ago and since I already have two of them I figured I'd make this one nice and evil and black.  First thing I did was change the trigger to the WWG trigger happy kit.  I cut the barrel down to 16.5" and did the same with the magazine tube as well. Good thing about the magazine tube was I could take that 3.5" from the rear of it and simply move all the cutouts from the front of the mag tube back to their respective places and simply cut notches into the barrel rather then have to cut new notching in the barrel and mag tube. Problem was the barreled action wouldn't fit in the Lathe, so I had to take the barrel off to recrown it.   Oh man look at that match grade crown.     With the barrel cut down to 16.5" and the magazine tube cut down to just under 16.5" the rest of the time was spend fitting the forward barrel band to fit the larger contour further down the barrel. I just used a dremel tool with a metal cylinder bit on it. Quick and easy, fits great. Cut the new notches in the barrel and fit everything. Another problem I ran into was the damn RamLine stock that I ordered for it simply didn't fit the Marlin receiver. the forend went on fine, but the tang channels in the buttstock where too narrow towards the rear.  So I put it on my mill and had to cut out at least .06" from the top and bottom tang channels to have the buttstock go all the way on and fit flush. I needed a bit of length of pull so I just put an 8/10 kickeez on it.  Grind to fit, came out perfect. I put the XS scout rail onto it and this is what I got for a finished product.  I don't know what I want to do with the stock, either have it painted either OD green or just leave it black. I am going to put a matte finish on the gun later on so match the stock and I'm also waiting of a Burris red dot scope I ordered from brownells. I'll post more pics when I get the red dot in. |

You should had threaded the barrel for a suppressor.
you make it seem like it is an impossible task to do at this stage. I got the barrel off before I sure as heck can get it off again.  When I can afford a can and the paperwork, threading this guy won't be a problem at all. |

The timing for this thread could not have been better for me. I just purchased a 336 for the same project!!!! I have a question, since I have not torn mine apart yet. When you cut down the mag tube, how did you determine the length?......To clarify, I want my mag tube to be shorter than the barrel, albeit I'll lose one round in capacity. Also, does the mag tube merely sit in the receiver? or did you do something different when you cut the mag tube down? Did you find a good source for the synthetic stocks? ( I'm looking at Midway USA right now) I really think you & all the others who are doing these projects are on to something. These will make great brush guns, and also make great HD guns!! Thanks |
for me I removed the same amount of material from the rear of the mag tube as I did in the front of the barrel. The magazine tube actually goes into the receiver but it is also held in place by the two barrel band cross screws. You'll have to mill or file new slots into both the barrel and mag tube. If you need any help I'll be happy to take pictures of the marlin forend completely disassembled so you can see what I'm talking about. I got the Ram-line stock from midway usa and I got the recoil pad from where I work. The cheap plastic plate that comes with the stock is garbage. you might also have to fit the buttstock like I did. The tang channels where too narrow. Thanks for the kind words, I really like this gun and I can;t wait to shoot it more.

I didn't use a mill to cut those slots. I had a very small and very aggressive rat tail file, so I used that. |

I noticed that your crossbolt safety was deleted. Did you just remove it and tap the holes for slotted plugs? The reason I ask is I would like to make that mod along with a forward mounted scope and a synthetic stock after deer season is over. BTW Great job, the rifle looks awesome. |
No. I replaced the safety entirely.  I dropped in that safety replacement and then put the ball bearing back i and screwed in that set screw without the spring and it locked it into position and holds it pretty well. |

The barrel band at the end of the mag tube may need some work on the top half, due to the slightly tapered barrel though, and the fact that the band will be closer to the receiver (ie the barrel is a larger diameter). |

You are correct. On the 30-30 you can shorten the magazine tube from the receiver end and not run into any problems. you just need to re-drill the hole on the underside of the barrel for that retainer screw to go in to. You also only need to refit one of the barrel bands and even that can be done carefully with a dremel. These where the new cuts I had to make for the barrel band and the magazine cap screw.

How good are your welding skills? Think you could cut it backa wee bit more and stick one of these on the end? 
It'd really help that wee beastie behave. If that's not an option, how about cutting a brake into the barrel? You could do a little before and after the band. Free bore the end and try something like this:
