Soooo, I got a really good deal on a new Cannon safe (I know its an RSC) and was all excited to get it home and get it mounted up in the spare bedroom closet. In hindsight, I probably should have run the idea by the wife before I made any big plans and long story short; the safe is going in the garage.
The only place in the garage that I found suitable for the safe was right next to the garage door. Not a huge deal, but I'm the kind of guy that opens the garage first thing in the morning and I don't close it until I leave the house or go to bed. I really didn't like the idea of having a gun safe on display for the world to see while the garage door is up so I figured that I'd like to camoflage it. After much research and thought, I wasn't feeling any of the options out there on the interwebs so I ran down to a local used appliance shop and asked them to call me if they came across an old broken freezer that was getting thrown out. Finally, a month later, one finally arrived that would be large enough to accomodate my plan and below is the process. First, the neccessary tools Most important, a constant, reliable supply of caffeine! 
An angle grinder 
A reciprocating saw w/ a light demo blade 
A hammer drill and air ratchet 
And of course, a skill saw 
Hear's the freezer when I brought it home before any cutting 
With the guts in the bottom removed 
Starting to get the interior panels out (I'm now convinced that I could put a frag grenade in one of these things and nobody outside the freezer would know it even went off) 
With the back and floor removed

Now on to the base that the safe will sit on. I had to build a cribbing to raise the safe about 9 inches off the floor so that the door openings would match up. It's anchored into the concrete and all of the wood is PT 2'x6" and 4"x4" lagged together for strength.

Myself and two friends used a pallet jack and alot of muscle to get the safe onto the base. The safe is rated at about 550lbs empty.

After many, many hours over the course of a few days, I cut out most of the foam, test fist several times, and FINALLY got this thing on.
I'm glad that I held onto the interior trim panels, they fit perfectly around the edge of the safe 
The doors open just fine, the safe door only opens 90 degrees anyways, so that wasn't a big concern 
I even held onto the wire baskets that hang on the inside of the freezer door with the hopes that they would fit around the handle and combination pad. They do! 
The freezer door even has a little lock. Had to buy a new key on ebay though.

| Don't you defeat the whole purpose when you open it up with the garage door wide open? Just something to think about, a lot of homes have thicker drywall on the wall connected to a garage to meet fire codes. A natural side effect of a thicker wall is better sound deadening. I've known people who got their garages broken into and never knew until the next morning. I guess if you have no choice in the matter, you just gotta do what you gotta do. Your project turned out nice, thanks for sharing. |
I like it and it gives me some ideas  The only bad thing about that location is that if someone DOES happen to find it, either physically or by word of mouth, all they need is a truck and a chain and they'll just take the whole safe with them. The fact that it's not anchored directly to the slab would make it even easier to yank out... |

Thieves can be cavalier some times and open the freezer door to look for a "Popsicle" or some thing.
But since you got one with the freezer lock it looks like you are good to go. I doubt they would take the time to mess with it for a on the fly refreshment.

Rigged a gun hidey-hole under the cellar steps in my old house; it had a swing out door with hidden hinges and releases, and fake shelves to better conceal it. It was really clever, but I could never show it to anybody because then it would get out eventually.
My ex sold the house later, so I don't know if the current owner even knows it is there. Moon |

Your project turned out nice, thanks for sharing. Simple fix. Just have an alarm sytem installed, or if you currenlty have an alarm, but no motion detector in the garage, have one installed. |
