[ARCHIVED THREAD] - 870 REM SBR WITH M16 BUTTSTOCK AND PISTOL GRIP, KINKY BUT USEFUL, PICS (Page 1 of 2)

I was flipping thru a gun rag (rare occation) when I saw an ad for Mesa Tacticals adaptor kit for sale. I built this 870 CQB 12 guage years ago and it had the Remington Police Top Folder on it and it really was hard on the shoulder with buckshot. 2 + 2 came together and a call to Mesa tactical had the kit on the way. The Rem had already been equipped with a Scattergun Technologies Front Sling swiver/Safety Plate, Wolf mag spring and Hi-Vis follower, Tactical Shell Lifter, Big head safety button and a Tritium front sight. So WTF, it was the perfect candidate to try this kit on. The guys at Mesa were great and shipped immediately. The kit installed in around 15 minutes (I actually took time to read the instructions). They offer the kit complete, but I opted for using my own choice of buttstock and tube as well as pistol grip. I used an LMT M4 buttstock and tube and one of our M4 buttpads (12 GA kicks) and an Ergo Grip. The kit was very complete and even inculded covers if you opt not to use a QD sling swivel. I had the old Bushnell Holo sight sitting in a pile of crap in my office and I thought it would be perfect for this project. Anyway the kit is top quality, fits perfectly, installs in a snap and makes for a very small package 870 with an adjustable butt and a PAD. The barrel has interchangeable Tru-Chokes. We have found a Mod tube patterns best with 14 inch or less shotguns and buckshot. This little dude holds all 9 in 16 inches at 25 yards.  Anyway here is the little mean bastard   Denny |

I actually ran into one of the owners of Mesa at a gun show a couple months ago. Great guy and the stock they sell is rock solid. If you don't want to run the rail set up you should check out their low stock adapter. The only drawback to the low stock adapter is that it only fits the tube of the AR stock. That means if you want to run a Magpul on it you can't get it to fit right with all the various Magpul shims and pieces. And the same goes for pistol grips - it doesn't have the full AR style arch in the back so you might have to modify grips to fit (they come standard with a Hogue grip). Their side saddle carriers are pretty neat too... Spooky |

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it was LW or TJ that specifically stated "standard stock only" with their big-bore AR's. |

You can put a MagPul on the High adaptor, not on the low. You can put an A1/A2 stock or whatever on the high, but again, not on the low. You can't use the high with ghost ring sights, because of the rail. The low has no rail. All this is in the shotgun forum somplace. CavArms makes a similar adaptor for about twice the price as the Mesa. |

It's to bad those guys went belly up (Argonaut Armament I believe). The way the continuous Picatinny rail was braced to both the receiver and the barrel was a big plus. |
Yeah, and they didn't have that hole thingy in the back either. For some reason that bothers me. How well do scopes hold up on these things? Denny? |

Wow, didn't think we would make it over here so fast!! We, Allen Gunworks, have taken over the AR15-870 Stock Adapter design from Argonaut Armament. We are expecting our first shipment of adapters by mid February and we are offering a special price on pre-orders until the middle of January. The rail in the pictures was never mass produced. We plan to change that. The piece that mounts on the adapter will be the interface between the adapter and the rail. We will be offering a receiver length rail and full length rails for the 12.5, 14, 18 and 20" barrels. We hope to have at least the receiver length rail ready when the adapters ship in mid February with the full length rails following shortly after. Hope this answers any questions anyone had. (Mods, if I have broken any rules by posting this info here please let me know) |

| CyberK, if your still designing the pic receiver rail heres a couple requests. Make it sit as low on the receiver as possible and notch out the entire center length of the rail so that ghost rings can still be used. You may also want to offer severl different lengths from entire receiver length, 3/4 length (so ghost rings can be use), and 1/4 length for those that just want the space for a QD mount. |

Anyone else built one of these? My buddy wants to order one for his 870 and have me put it together for him. Just checking to see if anyone else has ordered from either MESA TACTICAL or ALLEN GUNWORKS? Gene |

All of those silly sytems that REPOSITION the proper angle of the 870 buttstock are nonsense to me. Aside from looking stupid, they screw up the position of your head so you end up having to have some sort of elevated sight system. Like the GREAT Innocent_bystander says, "M4 stocks are for ARs!" |

Denny, First of all your shotgun is SOOO SWEET! Im going to start a SBS project soon and i love the look of yours...way to go man. Ok, for the questions...Is that just a normal 870 express platform, or has the mag tube been modified? what is the length of your barrel? Did you shorten it yourself or have it done? if you did it yourself what method did you use? and how many shells can you jam in that baby!? Yes, it is a standard Rem 870 3" magnum receiver. Mag tube is standard. The barrel is approx. 11". Shortened by us in the shop. We use a hack saw  and then hand finish it. This barrel has Tru-Choke tubes installed. I found a Modified Tube to give the best pattern with 00 Buck shot. Around 14" at 25 yards.The shot gun holds 5 rounds total. Denny |
