JohnnyMcEldoo, is that a Galil forend you put on that?

My FCG conversion is done, but I've not bought the stock pieces yet, so it'll be a while before I post my .308 conversion.

Here's what it looks like preconversion though, note the .308 and 7.62x39 round comparison.

Yes. I just got it tonight from Tapco. US made too! It feels alot different from the OEM gaurd but I like it. It seems to help quicken sighting as the top cover gives you a bigger plane to line the sights up with.

It's a 19" Saiga-12 with a Bulgarian side-folding stock.  It was kind of a pain to do the conversion, as in addition to the receiver modifications for the rear trunion, the trunion had to be thinned to accomodate for the thicker receiver.

I'd really like to know how the Russians set up the front latch on their Saiga folders, because there is hardly any room between the front trunion and the receiver shell.  I had to slightly thin the front latch internally, and come up with a different spring mechanism. The normal spring/retaining wire would never fit.

Nope. Probably because I lined the inside of the clamps with black electrical tape so there's no metal-to-metal contact between the bbl & clamp or the light & clamp. Better friction fit to prevent shifting, I hope...

Hello,
I went and purchased my first Rifle here and i went with a Saiga .223.
I love it, and have had it for  about a month now.
I have been looking into some of the conversions ya'll have done... And I like the Pistol Grip Butt Stocks.  I have read some sites on how to i Do it, but it seems a bit advanced.... is it easy or not?

Or is it just a Vanity thing... will the pistol grip offer anything more.?

Easy, if you have a drill and a dremel.  The non-.308 models require cutting two cross members (holding in the trigger levers), cutting 3 rivets and drilling a spot weld.  I did my .308 in an afternoon with the previously mentioned tools.  Just take your time and do each step as instructed on your instruction sites.

You get:
- 100% AK compatibility with stocks, FCG, and pistol grips.
- Better ergonomics
- Better trigger pull (with RSA FCG definately)
- Cool looks

You'll need to cut two rivets and two spot welds holding the bottom plate on.  Then cut the spot weld for the trigger guard.  There are no crossmembers/trigger levers in the .308 model, so that step can be skipped.

Update on my .308:  Just got the Tapco forend/stock from Scott yesterday.  The forend needed to be trimmed a littel to fit up against the trunion, now I just need to rig a retainer for it.  I hadn't decided on a pistol grip yet, but now I guess I'll be ordering a OD SAW to go with the rest of my furnitue from Scott as well.

I REALLY like the looks of that OD gaurd and folder. Hopefully the folder will stand up to the recoil.

Just an idea: to affix that gaurd you could make a small square nut with a radiused top to match your barrel say 1/4-20 and weld it(tack) to the bottom of the barrel so it would be in the middle of the length of the handgaurd. Then drill the handgaurd to match the location of the nut. I used old spark plug wire looms(hard plastic) superglued to the inside of my HG to fill in the gaps and make for a more secure fit.

Post pics when done

You could also hold it on with a screw through the hole in the bottom of the reciever forward of the mag well where the original wood stocks were attached.

The Tapco forend tang is too short for that, it's only about a 1/4" long.  It's short of even being seen through the hole in the bottom of the receiver.

I trimmed the front area of the gaurd a tad so it would slide into the reciever. I also superglued some hard plastic on the inside to take up some room and make it more solid. Then I took a piece of .100" thick sheetmetal (trimmed to the width I wanted) and I bent it into a U shape the same as the front of a galil stock. The way I bent it was using a piece of round stock close in size to the radius or U on the front of the galil stock. I put the round stock in a vice parallel to the vice jaws with the sheemetal behind it. Then I took a hammer and beat it over the stock. Then I flipped it over and did the same thing until I had the U shape. Then I milled all the edges square and drilled a hole in the bottom to fasten to the gas block. The hole is bigger than the screw threads so I can tap it down tight against the gaurd as I tighten the screw.

Its a pretty simple little piece to make provided you have the tools and works pretty good.
