Here's another one for those who can't get enough.
I may do it all over again, help me decide if it's worth it. I started with a TGI from a gun show (bought just weeks before the price drop) for $625. 
Worst damage was on the lower-rear of hand guard 
Everything stripped & sanded 
Minwax Red Oak stain and satin poly coat 
This was my first attempt at a refinishing job and I think it turned out pretty good. 
I was hoping for a darker color, however, and have thought about starting over. Maybe with a red mahogany? What are your thoughts? Leave it alone or try again? |

To everyone else who has responded, thank you very much for the kind words, and yes, I'm proud to say my dog is cool. Some a––hole dumped her as a sick puppy in my neighborhood...the saved one's make the best pets. I've decided to leave the rifle alone...for now. (Unless someone has a spare set of wood they'd like to unload) I've seen others with dark wood and they look great, but mine has this nice "toasted honey" look that is growing on me more and more. Now the metal is another story... Someone mentioned Alumahide. Whatr kind of results can I expect w/o access to a bead blaster or industrial oven (the wife's is off limits)? |

GB or the EE is a good place to look, just keep yours eyes peeled, I check them almost daily and see great stocks regularly Here is one just waiting to be refinished |

I like it! Some go too far trying to get the "Russian red" look and end up with a gun that looks closer to candy apple red than Russian red. Here is a hint for those of you who want a Red rifle, but don't want it to go tooo red. "Minwax Sedona Red" use about 4 coats for a dark, slightly translucent color that shows the grain, but hides some of the ugly laminate areas. it has that slight tinge of orange that the RIT dye method is missing, that causes the candy color red. Cover with "Satin" Poly––use the spray, and sand inbetween coats with 1500grit paper. Make sure it's indoor/outdoor poly. There are pictures of my rifle in the PSL new picture thread, for results. |

I've done the top cover on my Rommy G, and the slide on two pistols. Brownell's has some great how-to videos on using Alumna-Hyde II. I just watched the videos a couple of times and followed the instructions. I used steel wool on the parts first and then degreased them with TCE Cleaner. So far, the finish has proven to be really tough and it looks good.

It may not be to everyone's liking, but it works well for me. I'll tell you this, If you haven't tried a hogue grip yet, you owe it to yourself. I used to think I liked my CAA grip untill I got a hogue

| The biggest advantage to Alumahide is that it does not require baking and the psl is so long that it won't fit in a standard oven. You have to 1, degrease really well and 2, Let the finish cure for several weeks before reassembling the rifle. I used it on a de banning project over parking on a Norinco and it turned out good and has been VERY durable. |
