Mine are being shipped to me now. You can use either the ARMS #17 or the LT #17 mount with them and whatever tailcap you want (Pentagon, SF, etc). I will get a price out soon.

If anyone is interested in one of these please shoot me an e-mail. [email protected]

Here is some more info:

5mw 835nm IR laser, utilizing one CR123A battery. The IWAL 2 accepts the Larue LT171 or ARMS #17S mount. You can use the SureFire, Pentagonlight & Pelican tailcaps. Is waterproof and has click adjustable windage and elevation.

Price for the IWAL 2 is $500. This does NOT include the mount or tailcap. I will offer these seperately for the consumer to insall if they wish.

Grant, specifically which tailcaps fit this laser.
The same ones that fit the Scout 600 or even a M962 will also fit it?

I have a generic NV/IR laser question.  Can you damage your NV with a reflection of an IR laser?  If for example you accidentally hit a highly reflective surface with your laser can  you burn your tube with something of the power of the IWAL?

While I have never done it, I would think that you could do some serious damage to your NV.

An accidental flash from this very low power device you're talking about would NOT do permanent damage. (Either way, NOT a good practice, and avoid this at all costs!)  At under 5mW (eyesafe) this laser would have to be constantly directly into the NVD for several minutes to do any type of permanent damage such as a permanent burn. The IR laser source would have to be much more powerful to do damage in an accidental flash.  High power lasers, such as the types found on major battle tanks would indeed induce damage to the NVD and possibly your eye in short order. Thus, the reason for a LIF. (Light Interference Filter) for the PVS-14 or PVS-7's. Hope this helps.

Sorry for the hijak, but is there a LIF made for the MUM (MINI14... etc), and how does a filter which I would assume blocks IR still allow the IR beam to be seen by the NV, but not allow damage to the unit?  Thanks.

So how much is this thing with the mount and tape switch?

Will a tapeswitch from a SF G2 work with it??

Also how does the zero hold after shooting??how man rounds??

Sorry to ask so many questions, but it looks damn nice and $500 is hard to come by.

I just want to make sure this is as good or close to a PAQ-4.

Thanks

I believe so, contact Grant for verification

After 200 rounds of BH 75 grain, absolutely no change in zero

Sorry to ask so many questions, but it looks damn nice and $500 is hard to come by.
Agreed, but it is the best solution at the price.
What are the alternatives, a Russian unit of totally questionable quality, hey I've got some Russian NV gear, won't be buying any more, a hot US Gov unit, no thanks, used legal units off eBay, don't think so, if they were any good they probably wouldn't be for sale, and a Airsoft copycat, yeah right, or purchase a quality unit from a member here on the forums, the only other good choice but more money.  We'll see if this little unit is worth the money with more time and more rounds downrange, but it's pretty dang impressive right now.

As I spend more time with this laser, there are two things I really like about it. First is how far forward I can push it. Secondly, its low profile (doesn't appear in my FOV).

Grant's right, it's barely higher than a folded Troy front sight, plus you can mount it so far forward that it actually "overlaps" the Troy, and the IR beam is quite close to the weapons bore.

I never could get used to the fact that the excellent visible laser OTAL was in my field of view when using the Aimpoint, so I dedicated it to my SHTF A2 14.5" carbine.

Notice the far greater height of not only the beam over the bore, but of the unit itself in this picture.

And another comparison, the OTAL mounted on the same MRP as in the first picture.

Now I'd love to have an IR OTAL, but I wouldn't give up this new little IWAL 2 for it.

Since the IR LASER's tap switch is taking up space on the VFG how would you activate a white light if you had one on your rifle?  I guess an OFF-SET mount would work for the light since you could "thumb it" off and on, right?

You can do what  I do. Put the light at the 9 position and hit the click tailcap with your thumb. By running it this way you are less likely to pull your shots (which is what can happen if you wrap your thumb all the way around the VG).

Watcher, I might ha[ve] some options for you in the future. I am sure you have seen the IWAL 2 by now (which is an IR laser). We (Hayes Research and I) are looking at doing a dual model that will have a visible laser on one side and an IR on the other. Stay tuned.....

Actually, what might turn out to be even better combination would be a unit with an IR laser and an IR illuminator.  That way the operator could snap it on, and along with an NVD, go to work.  Remove it and the NVD and go with a weaponlight and reflex sight/scope for visible light operations.  It allows night gear to be purchased as an expansion "kit" to otherwise existing capabilities without overlapping or causing any piece to become obsolete.  Of course, I'm looking at this strictly from the non-governmental private application.

Visible lasers may work well in conjunction with IR illuminators and NVDs, but that's beyond my experience.  Of course, now we're talking about a unit which is essentially a DBAL-I (models 40084 or 40085).

The group I'm researching for at the moment will see use of this sort of kit for both CQB and overwatch at range (designated marksman/"DM") applications.  Thus, while in the CQB mode, a kit might be able to get away with relatively weak IR capabilities, the DM role requires extended distance from all IR.

To my mind, it seems a better idea to accommodate the long range requirements first and roll them back with filters or lower power modes (to reduce blooming, possible NVD damage, etc.) for CQB.  In this way, the specific products remain the same, along with spares, maintenance and operation training, even power requirements.  All components are exchangeable to the various roles, allowing for canibalization, when such circumstances may require.

That would be great, Grant.  The interface might allow field swapping for a visible laser, no?  Of course, the main "shortcoming" of the M1 is it's design limitation of 100m max throw.  In an overwatch role, this might be a bit short.  Has anyone tested it or another module for greater distance? (Wouldn't a two-CR123A model be great for twice the run time, similar to what Streamlight did with its Twin-Task 1L and TT2L flashlights?)

Incorporating a visible laser on the CQB platform should involve something equally small and lightweight.  Surefire makes a dual laser system with visible illuminator (491), but it's prohibitively expensive.  I'm not certain of the usefulness of a visible laser in the DM role at excess range (due to variation on bullet drop over distance) considering the presence (in my kit design) already of a 4-14x optic.  Thus, a long range visible laser target designator isn't really needed (civilians aren't guiding in bombs ... usually).

NVD designation (pointing out locations to CQB personnel) should be achieveable using your 300m IR laser in conjunction with CQB personnel NVDs (assuming respectable mWattage).  Incidentally, a Surefire Millennium model XM tailcap includes a tape switch, momentary, and constant on pushbutton capabilities that should fit the IWAL2.  I'll get mine through Calvin at Brightflashlights (he's tops in price and customer service).

Of course, it goes without saying every component, including mounts, should/must be drop and submersion rated.  Hazard environment finishes seem to be a no-brainer, too.  So, how far from reality am I?

I agree with all your points.  The M1 woudl not be suitable for long range target ID. The XM06 tail cap is an excellent choice as it gives you a constant on feature. I am also a SF dealer and sell the XM06 as package with the IWAL 2.

I am also working with a company that makes green lasers (best I have seen to date). They are looking at options (including the IWAL 2 design).

A green laser IWAL!
Now this would be great, keep it small and simple, just flip the qd lever, unscrew the battery cap, screw it on the green IWAL G, place on rail and flip qd lever again.  Quick, simple & small, no great big hulking units with visible & IR lasers, illuminators and with a price tag to match.

And while you're at it, get us an IR head (the IR filters suck) to fit a Surefire 972 so we can swap that with the Turbohead for dedicated long range covert night ops.
Modularity, that's why the AR is the best weapon system money can buy.

Actually, as I've been researching, it appears one of the other dealers on the board carries an excellent long distance IR illuminator -- Da Torch.  Wouldn't it be great if its head module could be adapted as an aftermarket product that would fit the Surefire M9xx series?

A SF M972XM07 and visible laser as the visible light kit, and the IWAL2 with DaTorch conversion head for night operation.  This would seem just the combo for non-LEO/military kits.  I'll enquire about the Da Torch head....

This leads me to the natural conclusion that no such mount currently exists.  So ... what, exactly, would be invovled in making one?  Depending upon the direction this project takes, a CQB apparatus with IWAL2 and M1 may end up being a sound configuration.  No sense in loading additional weight with still more mounts if one will do for both.

Doesn't anyone manufacture dependable Titanium mounts?

I think Hayes is going to switch manufacturers in the near future. This would give us the flexibility to make some design changes (like adding the M1 to the other side of the laser).

I do not know of anyone that makes Ti mount.

If you could get Hayes hooked up with larue, I see no reason why the design couldn't be switched to a "Lamsa" style mount. and have the m1 on one side and iwal on the other. Half the mount could nearly stay the same as what it is now. A decent programmer could convert the Lamsa mount to an M1/iwal mount in about 30 minutes , and I'm sure larue has some good programmers.

Well I hope they don't change the basic IWAL 2 much from it's current configuration or at least continue to offer it in this mount.
It's small, light, trim, low profile, very easy to switch to another AR, quick to zero.
What we need is a green laser version of it for daylight/medium light use with the same form factor, with the same tailcap specifications.
While it might be nice to have a model incorporating IR & Visible lasers and/or an IR illuminator, the small trim size is a big plus.

No fear on changing the IWAL2, just simply going to make some small tweaks to it. I am a perfectionist and am always trying to find ways to improve gear.

I am looking at a new green laser right now and hope to offer it and the IWAL2 in one package.
