[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Nightforce NXS 2.5-10 x 32 (Page 1 of 2)

I'm considering a Nightforce NXS 2.5-10 x 32 for an ar and I'm trying to decide on a reticle. I do want to use the rifle for coyotes so I've heard the mil dot is a good choice for the running dogs. But I've heard that some of their reticles can get lost in some enviroments. The np-r2 was one I was also considering but I heard it might have that problem due to its thinness. The new velocity reticle is one I was interested in too. I'm thinking maybe the mil dot or the velocity reticle might do the job. Any opinions or suggestions would be great
Also I was thinking of by passing the zero stop feature. Didn't know if it was worth the extra cost |
|
You shouldn't have an issue seeing any of them. The reticles are prominent enough, even the "thin" ones. Almost all of their scopes are SFP, so the reticle will stay the same size regardless of the magnification (so losing it at low/high power shouldn't be an issue either). If the background is too dark and there's the possibility that you'll lose the reticle against it (which is the only possible scenario where this might be a real concern), then you can always turn on the illumination. Isn't isn't daytime-bright, but it will glow red in full sunlight and willl be very visible against any dark background.
That said, the Velocity reticles might suit your need for coyote hunting. You might want to look them over. Pick what suits you best and have fun. |

Thanks for the replies above. Molon, is that reticle shot actually from your scope. I've been trying to get a look at a velocity reticle. They.. do seem very nice. Boy those scopes look very cool. It doesn't look like there would be any problems picking up that reticle. Anyone have any experiece with these
Thanks again Skyyr and Molon |

The Velocity reticle is a well thought-out design. It's simple, yet effective. It combines useful features in an uncluttered view. One of the best features of the Velocity reticle is that the center of the reticle is the 50/200 yard zero (instead of 100 yards, like many other reticles.) http://www.box.net/shared/static/hiy7u2n7vv.jpg http://www.box.net/shared/static/kqu0sk43s3.jpg http://www.box.net/shared/static/mla3p170ls.jpg Dead on the money description.....mine has the LV velocity and i am still learning how to fully utilize it, but its great.
eta...one of the better aspects for me on this LV ret. is having the holds and such marked but being one of the most non-cluttered ret. i have viewed. |

I'd suggest the Mil-Dot reticle. I fail to understand how the "one size fits all" BDC style reticle is of any advantage. Unless you enjoy the phrases, "Almost got it." or "Dang it! So close!". Get the Mil-Dot and learn how to use it with your specific ammo from your specific gun. |

True the only draw back of the velocity ret. that I can see is moving targets. I just plugged in my load's specs into the NF velocity reticle online calculator. It recommends the medium velocity reticle for my rifle. That reticle will put my bullet just a bit over 3 inches low at 500 yards. No thanks. |

Clarity/F.O.V. are lights out imho, light transmission through the x 32....well, we all know NF |

It is "exact" when I dial for that distance on my elevation turret . . . My Mil-Dot only gets used for holding windage and moving targets. Where is the 20 mph wind hold on your velocity reticle? |

Do you need a reticle to estimate range or just shoot? NP-1 is a fine general purpose reticle, FC-2 for close-up work. Mil-Dot for precision shooting. Your needs, your choice.
If you think you'll be running at 8-10x most of the time, the 32mm objective diameter does effect the image/eye sensitivity. |

I like the idea of the mil dot for moving targets but I must say the velocity ret. sound pretty cool. Sounds like some say the v rectile is fast. I'd like to hear how it does with a moving dog. Couldn't be any worst than my basic duplex scopes. Its a tuff call for me between the V and Mil dot |

| OK.....well any other happy customers using the V reticle. Especially if anyones been running around the hills with one. I just found out about them A few days back so this is all new to me. But obviously we have a few guys here that really like them. I definitely wantt to hear more about them with out a doubt |
| They are so brand new and the fact that the x 32 is also really new, i cannot imagine to many other folks having an opinion. When i got mine about 6 weeks or so ago i asked ard. and got zero feedback....just had to take that plunge, but with a company like NF behind it, its not a huge plunge. Always remember if you get one reticule and dislike for $140 or somewhere ard. that figure, NF will swap the reticule for your choice of new one. $140 beats the hell outta $1400! |

I'm considering the LV reticle for a 2.5-10X32 and I was going to spring for the ZeroStop turrets as well. I do like capability. As well as custom turrets.
And this scope will be used with one of Victor's finest AN/PVS-22 Mil-Spec night visions weapon sights. (Yep, he told me he could now legally sell them to us lowly civilians, of course you might want to see how long that lasts!) But, still undecided on the final configuration for the Nightforce. The LV reticle will be useable my application, 77gr ammo from a 16" "match" 5.56 barrel, suppressed. The other two scopes I use at long range are the MR/T ILL M3 3-9 with TMR reticle/77gr turret and the NSX 3.5-15X50 with the NP-R2 reticle. So, if I do get a LV reticle, which turrets? MOA or MIL? Or, should I go Mil-Dot reticle with Mil turrets? Get with the program, you know. Or the familiar NP-R2 reticle with ZeroStop 1/4MOA turrets. |

As far as the z-stops or no z-stops.....very much a personal thing, only you can range the amount of actual adjustments you plan on making out in the field and/or on the range. |

I said a reticule change was $140 earlier.....it's not, for the x32 or sfp model it is $250. Just wanted to clear that up, and i posted the .pdf link below to the service fill out form which has all the NF custom services listed.

I was planning on calling you buddy when the winds got past 10 mph...being you are a true guru and all! Super useful info pal....nothing childish about it ![]() I'm sorry I've shaken your reticle belief system, but answer me this . . .am I wrong to ask these questions? The OP asked about reticle choice, and I believe the Mil-Dot to be the better choice for his application, especially with his moving target requirements. How is that being childish? Molon was right, holding for distances with the Mil-Dot is, at best, on par with the Velocity reticles. My point about dialing elevation did not apply. I apologize for changing the argument. I don't hold for distance, I dial. I was reminded however that some people like to hold for distance, especially with a 223. That said, the similarities between the Mil-Dot and the Velocity reticles end there; 1. Ability to hold for any wind speed? - Mil-Dot 2. Ability to lead moving targets? - Mil-Dot 3. Ability to use with any caliber and/or trajectory - Mil-Dot 4. Universal ranging system that can be applied to other mil-based reticles - Mil-Dot I've given your arguments consideration, but I just don't see the advantage of the Velocity reticles. They are too narrowed a specific round, at a specific distance, in specific environmental conditions. The only thing saving you is the fact that we're talking about presumably large targets at close ranges (less than 500 yards). A coyote is much smaller than a human-sized target. If you can't see my points, fair enough. You have a nice day also. |

I have been watching this thread for a couple of days, and have finally taken the time to reply.
I am mostly with Glock24 on this one, except for the fact that my brain works better in MOA than mil-rads, so both of my 2.5-10 NXS's have NP-R2 and MOA turrets. With either the mil-dot/mil-rad or NP-R2/MOA, one has the OPTION to either holdover OR dial-in for BOTH elevation AND windage with ANY ammo that has been properly DOPE'd. This is not to say that I am totally against BDC reticles, but my experience with ACOG's indicates that one is still holding over/under at some ranges....and ACOG's are parallax-corrected, whereas compact NXS's are not. Edwin, I think that you would like the zero-stops. I have one of each. The zero-stops are a bit of a PITA to zero, but once they are, they work well, particularly if you have POI offset with a can. |
|
2.5x10x32 is parallax free at 125 yards and the x24 is at 100 yards. I went with the LaRue combo with MIL-DOT and .25 adj with zero stop. I'll be shooting different stuff so I did not want the Velocity reticles. Call and talk to the scope guy at LaRue he realy knows his stuff. |

All you have to do is hit the middle button..."factory loads", then find your particular ammo and hit "return to main calc. page" or something close to that.......once your back on the main page w. the factory load selected hit ok......I have tried damn near all of them, with the results never being anything but the LV for a .223/5.56 load. One of the sexiest points to the LV ret. is for MK 262 lovers being that its dead on for this ammo when using the reticule sight in distance correctly. try this link.....just when the page comes up...find the "next" at bottom of screen and click it and you will be redirected to the MK 262 results. However, if I were to get the scope with no turrets, the LV reticle would be the best choice, at least for my application, which is 77/75gr ammo out of a 16-18". Then I could have my NSX 3.5-15X50 "upgraded" to ZeroStop MOA turrets. Where's Trident's link? I may just go with that option. |

Figured out how you're gonna lead moving targets yet? Or shoot in a 15 mph wind? Probably something like I do with my basic tradition reticals. Obviously a mildot or np-r2 would work better on moving targets overall. But the v-ret. is still very interesting. If it only traveled to the range it might be a no brainer for me. I original had interest in the np-r2 but I heard some complain about losing the retical in thick brush areas due to thinness. But from what I've been hearing here, I don't think it's a concern for me any longer. Maybe I should be considering the mildot or np-r2 instead. Tuff call. |
