Burris 1-4X XTR First look (pics)
I've been looking at this scope for a few months. Midway had them on sale for $539( Veterans day email), so I thought I'd check one out. First thing I noticed is the bright clear glass. True 1x is even better than my Weaver V3 and much faster than the 1.25x TR21R Accupoint or MILLETT DMS. It feels as fast as AIMPOINT at 1x. ...although the luminated reticule is not as bright as Aimpoint or Accupoint TR21R. The lum adjustment reminds me of my vehicle’s intermittent wipers adjustment. 
Field of view is Great- 109 ft at 100 yrds. Reticle is calibrated from 100-1000yrds. With 5.56mm 62gr ammo. The scope seems well made, looking at the front of the 30mm tube it looks thick and solid. 
Unlike most valible scopes I own, the power magnification adjustment is not a ring, but the entire rear bell of the scope. This gives you a lot to grab on to when switching from 1x to 4x, which is a plus, but makes it weird if you try to mount a butler creek style flip up lens cover. 
Windage and elevation can be adjusted with your fingers, and feel consistant, up/down and left/right with solid clicks. 
With both set to 4x, looking across the field at night, it’s brighter than my NIKON moncarch 3-9x-40. This scope seems to be a very nice choice for 3-Gun. Made in the USA

Thanks for the post. i've been lurking on Brian Enos' forum for a 3 gun site. I'm doing my first match in two weeks but the range in 75 yds. max for rifle, so I'll use my Eotech 512 that I have. I'm hoping to get a spot at the Blue Ridge 3 Gun Match in March and the Burris with the SPE-E mount is what I'm thinking about.
I read on one of the posts that Burris is going to make the reticle brighter with their new model for this sight whenever it comes out. I purchased a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14X50 LRT for my JP CTR-02. It sure is a great scope, but not for 3 Gun. |

If they do, this scope can find a good home on another rifle, maybe my 6.8mm |

Burris customer service? Ability to hold zero? General construction (of this scope)? Comments like these without qualification don't seem to make sense. To say the quoted comment with the only perceived shortfall of the scope being the name on the side seems ridiculous. Comparing the price with similar products it does not seem outrageously priced for a variable power illuminated scope. The only thing I find questionable is the package deal Burris is running with a FastFire mounted on a 1-4x illuminated scope; but the OP didn't even go that route. Regards, Mike |

So you can run some ballistic software to find the drop of your particular round and match them to the reticle marks. Ballistic Recon Reticle XTR Tech Notes Page 3 on this downlaod explains how to calculate the offsets Ballistic Plex Reticle I did this with a Burris Ballistic Plex reticle for my 6.8 hunting rifle. In the LaRue thread I linked to above, he linked to this online software which has a good database of bullets for the various rounds and is very flexible. Ballistics Software ETA: It works very well. At my local range there are two 6x12 gongs on the hill at about 350 yards slant range. If I hold the top of the gong halfway between the 300 and 385 yard marks, I can hit it almost every time (when I don't jerk on the trigger  )

I've had the opportunity to compare my FFII to a Nikon and Leupold; the Leupold beat out the FFII but the FFII beat out the Nikon (3 of us guys at the range came to this consensus based on glass clarity at 100yds) I challenge you, quicksilver, to find another variable illuminated scope w/ BDC type reticule in the same price range. I actually like the Burris w/ Fastfire combo quite a bit! SWFA has it for $737 but I found it even cheaper, so $539 for the scope and another $150 for Fastfire, mount, and rings. Sounds like a good deal to me! |

Does the reticule stay a constant size when it is zoomed, or does it also enlarge? I don't know about the 1-4x XTR, but my Burris Ballistic Plex reticle changes relative size with mag changes. The reticle remains the same size, but the field of view changes, which means the divisions change relative to the magnification. It's calibrated for the maximum magnification. There's a white dot on the scope to align the calibrated magnification. The literature states most are calibrated like this, so I assume the XTR is as well. |
