Federal 62 grain FUSION

The Federal 62 grain Fusion bullet appears to have a very similar design to that of the Speer 64 grain Gold Dot.  Both are bonded bullets, have the same advertised muzzle velocity and both have the unique Gold Dot boat-tail shape.  While this load is being marketed as a "deer" load, it has all the makings of a good barrier-blind load.

It’s difficult to see with the naked eye, but the Fusion bullet has a “skived” tip.

As seen above, the Fusion bullet has a cannelure and the case mouth is crimped.  The lot that I evaluated is loaded in Lake City 09 brass cases. The primer pockets are crimped and sealed and the load is charged with “ball” powder.

The advertised velocity for this load is 3000 fps.  From a 20" Colt barrel with a NATO chamber, chrome lining and a 1:7” twist, the 62 grain Federal Fusion bonded soft-point had a muzzle velocity of 2877 fps.  The claimed ballistic coefficient for this bullet is 0.339.

The accuracy of this load was excellent for a soft-point bullet.  A 10-shot group fired from my Krieger barreled AR-15, at a distance of 100 yards, had an extreme spread of almost exactly 1 MOA.  It will be interesting to see how this load performs after barriers.

*No animals were harmed during the testing of this ammunition.

Tag and so forth.

I'd love to pull a few of these bullets and hand load them at a higher velocity to see what would happen.

Not another blue couch!  I sense this is a recurring theme here on ARFcom...

Good write up brother, as usual!

Looks good. I wonder how terminal performance compares to the gold dot.

Also I cant put my finger on what T-1 micro mount you are using.

Sweet and short report. Excellent work. I have found My 20" 1-9 loves 62 gr bullets.

Also waiting for the barrier tests.

Good review. I also like the cynical humor of putting an AR next to a poodle looking dog for the photo

I want something just like this, but at 5.56 pressure.

Molon (and everybody else):
Please keep us all informed if you see ATK ballistic gel data or if they start bringing the stuff to LE demos. I'd love to see a good comparision between this and the 2 previous Bonded Bear Claw loads.

Don't let 'em tease you on the La-Z-Boy, it's good stuff (that's why I sell it)!  Possible to ship you some ammo to test?  Curious on the .308 Rem. Corelokt 150gr. PSP (non-bonded) out of an 18"bbl.

Any idea what the effective range of this loading would be out of a 16" barrel?

These are actually listed as 64gr. So, assuming that the description is accurate, there are both 62 and 64 grain Fusion bullets out there, with 64gr possibly being the same as the Gold Dot?

I hope the dog wasnt injured. It is cute.

What do they look like compared to Speers 62gr bonded bear claw (federal LE223T3).
You can locate those projectiles easily.

Anyway, just ordered 2K.  BTW, from eyeballing the picture they have at their web site, they do appear to be very similar, if not identical,  to the 64 gr Gold Dot bullets from Molon's picture. Definitely longer than the 62 gr Fusion.

The 64 grain Fusion bullets do indeed weigh 64 grains.  While they are very similar to the 64 grain Gold Dots, they are not exactly the same.

Gander Mtn is the retailer of the Fusion line that I have come across. Really expensive, but I guess someone has to pay for that fancy box.

I'm interested in further review from Molon. Then if I can find it for a decent price, I might try it in place of the Power Point.

Would love to find a source for some these. I missed out when they were in stock.
