Please add your personal experience with WOLF ammunition to this thread. When you do, please give information about:
1) Ammunition used (55gr, 62gr, FMJ, HP)
2) Firearm used in
3) Approximate number of rounds fired.

This review is for the OLD style Wolf ammo with the green lacquer coating. If you would like to review the newer gray polymer coated variety, please refer to this post.

For more information about this ammunition, check out the Wolf website

From RussB's post out of a 16" barrel:
Velocity (55gr): 2728fps, StdDev=151fps
Velocity (62gr): 2644fps, StdDev=140fps

Let's limit this to .223/5.56 ammunition, since this is an AR-15 forum. No offense to the guys with AR's in other calibers, but we all know that .223 chamberings are the most sensitive.

I am trying to solicit only information about your PERSONAL experience with this ammunition. If you haven't used it, then please don't clutter up the thread. Information about proper functioning (or lack thereof) is obviously the most important, but factors such as the accuracy or other peculiarities you've noticed are informative also. If you have had problems with this ammo which were severe enough to cause you to stop using this ammo, then please describe them. And one more minor request: keep your reviews objective.

This post is part of a larger information-gathering effort I'm trying to start about ALL ammunition popular in AR's:

I shoot the 62gr through an Oly A2 carbine.  I have put around 700 rounds through this rifle without any ammunition related problems.

wonder how many of those who have had problems thoroughly cleaned their weapon?

other thoughts:

chaos' corvette example is a good one.
some fossil fueled engines run on high octane fuel, some run on kerosene.

some rifles can shoot wolf, some can't. there's tolerences in everything mechanical.

good range ammo, i have used literally tens of thousands of rounds of wolf, and the only problems are, dirty, and i have had maybee 20 primers fail to ignite, but hey, it is cheap range ammo what do you expect, it is not lake city, nor does it claim to be

As I've stated in my post, I DO have a reason:
http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=16&t=169729

I thought about re-using Collin's thread, but I wanted to keep the poll format the same across the board for all ammunition.

Sorry, didn't follow your link to the explination for this poll.  Good idea.  I look forward to your polls on the other types of ammo as I've used all the cheap stuff and have had very few problems.

1) Ammunition used:
Newly produced (no red selant) Wolf 55gr FMJ

2) Fireare used:
DPMS Lo-Pro Classic, 16" non chromed

3) Approximate number of rounds fired:
500 with zero problems.

55gr FMJ, RRA M4 upper on DPMS lower.  Less than 100 rnds fired.

Not alot of rounds, but the funny thing is, out of the 40 rds of S&B I've been through I had a FTE.  Out of the 100 rds of Winchester White box (Non-Q3131A) I've fired, I had about 5-6 Failures to chamber.

Not a single problem with the Wolf and I hope it stays that way.  Can't beat the price.  That being said, If I have the money I will be switching to Q3131A next time around.

Very interesting that the 30% of the people who posted that had problems didn't bother to describe them...[rolleyes]

1)55 gr, FMJ & HP's, ALL Red Sealant Type also

2) Fulton Armory 16" Carbine, NON-Chrome Lined

3) 2000+, 1 Dud.

Ran 2-3 30 rnd mags through the Rifle in only a few minutes with a  random mixture of Wolf, Q3131A, LC. Not a single problem.

1) types, 55gr & 62gr, FMJ & HP
2) M16s, AR15s, FNCs, AC556s, Mini-14s, T/C Contender, H&R HandiRifle
3) Avg year 10k 223, total at least 60k rounds if not more.

Wolf user from day one, mainly in M16s; still shooting red sealant stuff as I find it.  Put 10 mags rapidly thru an HK33 FA once for test function and it worked fine; gun owner didn't want a endurance test.  Biggest complaint is not being able to keep a burst within 4" at 100yds.  I never clean a gun until it starts jamming; the FNC is holding out the best, 6k+ rounds Wolf since last cleaning.  Just patiently waiting for Wolf in 308.

I bought a case (1000) rounds of 62gr FMJ Wolf.  I found it dirty, underpowered, and with poor accuracy (I was shooting it to 500M).

Out of 1000 rounds I had 7 fail to fire.  Never had any 'laquer problems'.  Roughest test was firing about 100-200 round one weekend, letting the rifle site for a couple of weeks, then heading to a tactical match.  That morning  (about 3 -4 hours worth) I fired off another 500 rounds of the ammo.  Other than a few failures to fire the rifle functioned.

Rifle was a post ban Bushmaster M4/AK (M16 chamber, chrome lined barrel, yada-yada-yada).

I recently ran a carbine course where one of the students was running an Olympic Arms Carbine (no chrome lining) and 55gr Wolf FMJ.  700+ rounds were fired over the 3 days and he had at least 7 rounds fail to fire.  At one point I think he cycled through 4 rounds till one fired.  No feeding or extraction issues noticed.

I guess I forgot to post my problems, my apologies sir....

My guns don't shoot groups with THE WOLF, THey Shoot Patterns, as in Shot-Gun type patterns.

Is that problem enough for you or do I have to go into the Jamming Details?

This brings an interesting point to this poll. Should "Problems" be considered FTF amd FTE only or can a "Problem" include poor accuracy.  Can a "Problem" be that is smells? Maybe a "Problem" is that it is Russian made. Hmmmmm . . .  Would be nice to know as some people are not as picky about accuracy, smell, or point of origin as others.  The poll as is, IMHO, is to general to be of any use.

On a side note, FTF are usually tracked to the type of bullet (SP, HP, FMJ) and not the type of case.  At least this has been my experience.

I see what you mean, but I hope that most people won't be that finicky about grading ammo. Even if some do, I believe they would not make up a significant percentage of the total. The more options you add, the more difficult the results will be to interpret. If you have a killer idea, let me know - although I don't know if it will be possible to change the poll at this point in time.

20" Colt Sporter Target
500 rds or so
2 rounds stuck in chamber.  Knocked out with cleaning rod.  Went back to firing.  Very dirty, but otherwise OK for just shooting cans and such.

I tried 100 rounds of Wolf 62Gn in a Colt Sporter Comp HBAR.

Had multiple failures to extract when shoot during the summer months in the desert. If the rifle was llowed to cool, such as during a lunch break, with a round in the chamber, that round would always fail to extract.  Rifle has never malfunctioned with any other ammo type.

Even from flash supressor equipped rifles, Wolff launches flaming clumps of unburned powder about 15 yards down range. It's is very dirty ammo, and it smells bad.

My featherweight Olympic barrel doesn't like the 55 gr. It sprays them all over the  place. I only shot one or two boxes.

55 gr FMJ, FTE's were the rule, not the exception.  Had to bring and cleaning rod along to knock the casings out of the chamber.  I bought 1000 rounds, and ended up sending 500 back to wolf (they DID refund my purchase price for the 500 rounds).  Might get some of the new without the red sealant and try it, but only because brass cased SA or equivalent are unattainable for a reasonable price.  Mine shot ok as far as accuracy, not target ammo, but not as bad as some people have posted.  I DID clean my gun very thoroughly as I thought that might be the problem.  Still FTE's all the time.

55gr and 62gr fmj only. Over ten thousand rounds in m16 and several hbar ar's and carbines, all 1/7 twists . Not one mis-fire. Very few mis feeds mostly due to dirty bolt or bad mag. Ammo is dirty because of case sealant but is fairly accurate. Tolerances are tight. Measuring bullet seating depth, diameter and quality of components this is truly high quality consistent ammo for steel case ammo.

[#25]
-55 gr FMJ
-Bushmaster 20" Post-Ban
-USGI surplus mags
-100 rounds fired
-gun was thoroughly clean

In 2000,I bought 5 boxes to try when they were on sale for $1.99 a box. Numerous (50% or more) failed to eject and/or failed to feed. 100 yard groups looked like a shotgun pattern. These rounds had the red selant, and it did get all over the place, but I don't think that was the problem. Never bothered to chrono, but I think they were underpowered.

I have never had any problems with any other ammo I've tried, including some very light handloads. Even the cheapest surplus and remanufactured gives me at least 2-3 MOA. Sub MOA with good handloads or quality factory stuff. Never any functioning problems, except Wolf.

I shot up the 100 I had, and have never looked back.

If it performs well in your rifle, great. Maybe I'm just unlucky.

dumped a case of 55gn through my Gov A2 upper a few weeks ago....... No jams of any kind... includes all ammo types i've tried.. I also use the Wolf XP extractor springs..  I think they grip the slimy wolf casings a bit better.. I also only use good condition USGI mags with green followers... The upper was completely filthy after the case ran through it though..

USGI 30rd mags

Shot 500 rds of 56 gr with no problems at all and this was some old ammo bought several years ago for a mini 14.

Shot 500 rds current 62 gr. and had no problems.

I try to shoot all kinds of ammo, I really want to test the reliability of this weapon as opposed to an AK-47.

Earlier wolf caused multiple malfunctions in my Oly 16" and in my DMPS 20" rifles, these would rip the rim off and stick in the chamber.  A cleaning rod was the only solution.   New Wolf without red sealant fired through my Colt A2 Hbar had Zero malfunctions, sub standard but plinkable accuracy.  Tried running with bump fired Beta C mag and even then had no malfunctions with 2 40+ round bursts.   Very dirty and smelly tho.  I'll buy it if it's cheap enough.

the ammo seems to have a nice consistant load and is as accurate or more than the 1000 of federal xm i had before. ive had a few casings with cracked necks after firing that ive seen but nothing alarming.
very happy with it and i will be buying it again without hesitation
for me it takes the place of buying surplus ammo.wolf is cheaper, brand new and the accuracy is the same or better.
edited to full 1000 rounds after i finished the case.

Ran another 100 rounds through this weekend with no problem.  55gr, new manufacture, no red sealant.  Not revoting as I already voted that I've had no problems.
On another note, ran into one of the guys from OnPoint Firearms at the range and they were running 500 rnds of the soft nose stuff through an M4.  I walked in just after they had a case stick in the chamber.  If I understood right, that was the only failure of any kind through some 400 rnds.

55 grain HP through Colt HBAR and Orlite mags. No malfunctions whatsoever. Shot 1000 rounds in approximately six months, alternating with surplus Guatamalan ammo. Wolf leaves behind lots of carbon-type residue on bolt carrier group and chamber but not much fouling in bore.
Accuracy was sporadic (I used a Tasco SS 10X for grouping tests) but acceptable for practice.Weapon was relatively clean before firing. Paid $90 for 1000 rds at a local gun show.

Have Armalite AR15 and have tryed 3 different time in last 2 years and have at least 25% of Wolf not chambering properly. Last time didnt bother to take to range as wouldnt chamber when tryed at home. Silver Bear works like a dream in it and ANY brass cased as I shot them all at one time or another.

55gr FMJ I've shot around 3000+ rounds through my 16" Bushmaster. No problems

[#37]
-Wolf 62gr FMJ
-2 Colt HBARs 20" 1/7 twist
-Just under 1,000 rounds fired between both weapons

Zero FTF or FTE problems with either rifle and no ignition problems. My gripe is with poor accuracy and difficult removal of the laquer (or whatever it is) that the rounds are coated with.

Edit: I should probably note that my complaint about accuracy is for distances beyond 100 yards. At short distances of 100 yards or less it groups acceptably for plinking ammo.

Recently tried again...had multiple fail to feed with 55 gr.  Potentially could have been the factory Bushmaster 10 rd. mag, but it's never had a sniffle with brass case ammo.  I'll retry again with different mags and see if that helps.  I want this stuff to work for me because it's sooo cheap.  Cheers.

I used a 500 round case of the 62gr FMJ wolf and had two miss fires. No extraction problems in my 16" Bushy Carbine. Its dirty and smells differnt to other ammo Ive used. I like the metalic ring of a brass case extracting better, but its cheap and fine for 100 yard plinking.Ive used the 7.62 x 39 wolf in my mini 30 as well, no problems, but its a tough gun.

Shotgun accuracy with 55 gr ball from a Mini-14, one FTE and two FTFs (Orlite mags) and 2 MOA from a 16" frankengun.  Velocities were low on the 55 gr ball and near SS109 spec on the 62, even though its just ball ammo, not true SS109.  It's decent plinking/training ammo, not what I would use for serious social purposes.  It is dirty and stinks, but works well enough.  I will no doubt buy more.  Ops
9/21/2003 6:49:09 PM EDT
[#41]
Cleaned the rifle every 200 rounds or so. Started shooting this stuff about 880 rounds ago. Round 881 FTE.  Looks like the ejector ripped the rim right off the case. The case was easily removed with a cleaning rod.  Might be going back to brass cased ammo!

Too bad...this stuff was cheap and hit everything I shot at at 75 yards. Might go ahead and buy some more...hard decision with only one FTE out of 800. Try it in your rifle...one FTE out of a 1000 and 100 bucks cheaper per K is fine for plinking at cans...unless they are cans with AK47s aimed at you :)

Haven't had any problems with this ammunition in my rifle (only 20 rounds fired), but it's NASTY.  It smells bad and is the dirtiest ammunition I've ever seen.  I voted for no problems, but I will not be using it in my rifle again.  The only time I'd use it is to test and make sure my rifle will eat _anything_ which is what I was doing.
