I finally finished my rebuild of my 40. I wanted to switch it over to a flat top upper and change over to a magazine setup that uses the standard mag release. Finally got all the parts put back together. Hopefully if it didn't rain too much at the range so I can go shoot it in a couple of hours. LOWER Complete RRA with Advanced Armament rate reducing buffer. UPPER Oly Arms barrel and bolt. The flattop is an LAR that was modifed by SNS Industries for the Oly ejector. MAGAZINES/BLOCK Sten magazines that were notched by SNS. The block is from SNS. It was a "in the white" and I painted it black. The block sits in the mag well and tightens up with an allen wrench. The notched magazines use the regular mag release. Some of the magazines have been modified to better feed the 40. They have the follower built up so the round sits directly in the middle. OPTIC Cobra red dot sight bought from kalibr in the Goup Buy EE forum. AMMO Crapload of Remington and Federal 155gr ready to be shot.

That's ghetto!!! What do you do for a living? You must have a good job to be able to afford to blast away with hollowpoints. I am poor and have to either reload or shoot Wolf ammo. How do you like the Kobra? I have one on my VEPR and think it's fine on an AK. One of these days I'll have to try one on an AR. Does it co-witness with BUIS? Can you get a good cheek weld on the stock? |
So much for the warning for you not to shit in my thread!  Just keep shooting those Tony's and Lady Bushmaster rifles. I imagine your ammo cache must be hauled around by forklift by now. I don't have a buis for either rifle yet. I'll probably get one for the other one first, then this one. It looks like it might be to tall to co-witness. The cheek weld is good. |

The mags that have the follower modified were bought like that from the EE. They don't seem to make that much of a difference, except it does make the mags load slightly better. What does make a difference is that I filed the feed lips down so the rear of the case sticks up further. The bolt misses the case rim in the mags that I didn't file down.

Thanks. I'd like to see that glock Oly setup. I thought about going in that direction but since I don't have an Oly dealer in my area, the local FFL wanted to charge me full retail.
Depending on the different manufactures of the Sten mags, they will hold about 16-18 rounds. Some of the magazines have a couple of coils cut off the springs and they load easier. After about 10 rounds, I start tapping the mag firmly on the bench every few rounds to get them in there. A mag loader is a must for loading them to capacity. |

Brushdog, thank you for posting the pics. I copied them to my computer for later reference. Did you or the previous owner make any kind of clearance cut to the front of the mag to allow the bullet/case to exit the mag? Troy at barrelxchange says I may need to cut the front. Looks like I'll need to just dedicate some mags for 40 then. |
| I'm an idiot, please explain this to me: I thought the Olly system placed the STEn magazine at the front of the AR15 magwell with one spacer only fitted behind the mag. I also found out the SNS two-spacer system was to allow the STEn mags to be used with the Colt center-mounted magazine position. You seem to be using a crossbreed of Olly upper with Colt-like mid-mounted magazine. How is it all working together? |

The Oly system is pretty versitile. So long as you place the mag far enough forward to clear the coil spring of the ejector you are good to go. Having the spacer at the rear makes for some simple one piece blocks (and welded spacers) but it is not really necessary. I've been playing with it for a while and am in the process of working out a block that will use Sterling mags. It is similiar to the SNS block just a little longer on the rear spacer. I've got it working pretty good in Delrin, now just need someone to grind one out in aluminum. Once that is done, the slightly modified Sterling mags will use the stock AR release and will be a HELL of a lot easier to load. cheers ka |

Well, its for the 9 right now...but then again, so is the sten. I don't have any loaded .40 around to try it with. I imagine that the sterling mag would hold 1 or 2 more .40 than the sten since it holds 2 more 9. I;ll keep ya posted. ka |

Kingair, explain the difference in the mage block for Sterling mags. Why would it need to be longer? I was about to buy an SNS block to run Sterlings, it might not be a bad idea to ask SNS to make the modifications for you. I'd definately buy one and I'm sure a group buy would be a good idea. Free BTT, so I do not lose it... I bought the last of Henry's British Sten and Indian Sten mags last week... The followers in the Indian mags look almost like those you say are modified... without a better pic, I might say those "modified" followers might be Indian. Mine are flat across the top. Go back and see if they was stamped that way, or material added. Now, How do I get those stupid brass rods to let go at the top inside the mag tubes ? |

ARguy, I had messed around with the idea of doing a 40 S&W and when I read your post I decided to see just how many 40 S&W's would fit in a Sterling magazine -- would you believe 25 rounds! I can't say it will function with that amount loaded but that's a descent amount of ammo in a magazine. Do you or anybody else here know if this double stack/double feed mag will work in the OLY system -- in 40 S&W caliber? |
Don't know about the 40 cal mags, but the 9mm Mp5 mags are to wide for the standard AR magwell. The sterling mags...especially the NIW ones from DSA are gonna be your best bet. ka |
