Now before you get your feathers all ruffled about this being in the wrong forum you all let that "mods need to start busting heads" thread run in here so I feel you should let this one too.

I have noticed that this word gets thrown around an awful lot around here and was wanting to know peoples deffinition of such, and the defining line between a wannabee and a non wannabee. Does one need to have a certain level of training? own an AR for a perscribed ammount of time, carry an AR for a living, or have some kind of combat experience?

I bring this up because after all this is a tech forum and name calling as such tends to be off subject, which this post kinda is in the first place but I feel it is important to get some feedback on this. Like I said, I see this used on here ALOT, and was wondering how manny that use this term are actually wannabee's themselfs.

Also, are there different levels of wannabee's? And if so, what do you think they are? Please list explinations.

Again mods, you let that head busting thread run so please be kind.

Only the high and mighty types pull the "your not .mil so you aint shit" or "I dont know why civilians need a light on their AR" A guy name Merlin {remember him?)IIRC pulled the one about the light

...anyway just because someone has a tricked out AR doesnt automatically get bashed whereas yahoos make comment about carrying thousand of rounds of ammo so they can "Break Contact" and "Dump" hundreds of rounds, or those who dump C-Mags with LW barrells tend to get some heat

I wouldn't worry about it, just dont BS about what you did or are doing because it WILL be found out!

And is some asshat gives you heat fagedaboutit

Oh this aint for my sake, I know where I stand in this. I am just trying to get some other people thinking here. I fit in all the above catagories but I dont throw around the "wannabe" shit like some of these fools.

ETA: I might be a little hard on those posing as experts on something when they have no knowledge but I dont down folks who are trying to learn or get into this stuff.

Agreed.

To me, a "wannabe" is some 14 year-old kid who plays a lot of counterstrike lecturing Iraq combat vets about the best way to configure an AR, or how reliable it is in the desert, etc.  Although, perhaps that would be more like a "poser" - and I'm not sure if that means that same as "wannabe"

In terms of AR-15s nobody is a "wannabe" if they own an AR and shoot it, or just happen to be interested in the rifle (even if they don't even own one), IMO.

I don't really care how much crap someone chooses to bolt onto their rifle, or whether they've got military/LEO experience or what.

I would like to point out that at the time I checked this 126 people had viewed this post, but the post about someone with problems with their AR had only 26, and their post had been up longer than mine. Interesting.

fior the purposes of what you are asking a wannabe and poser are the same thing, we all "want to be" better at things than what we are, so the desire to learn and improve can not be slighted, but when one acts like they are better than what they are, based on what happens on their computer screen, then they are a wannabe.

i read the post about the guy with the short stroking upper, but as a 14 year old kid that does not really own an AR and only plays counter strike, i can not really offer any help.

-You wear full cammo gear and helmet while shooting varmint.

-You watch action movies while fonding all your AR's.

-You clean your rifle while wearing underwear.

-You dry fire at the TV while watching Oprah.

-You own every Blackhawkdown vest made.

-You fantasize and make plans about killing zombies.

-You practice CQB naked in front of your gilfriend.

-You make your friends take pictures of youself while pretend-shooting posters of Osama.

There's a 16 year old kid on another forum giving advice on handguns and actually convinced a few people (one was a LEO) to buy S&W 686s as carry/defense pieces instead of Glocks, because Dean Spier/The Gun Zone is "official proof" that Glocks are KB'ing POS handguns

AR-15 Wannabe?

  • Most on the GD.

  • High schoolers on ar15.com.

  • Trolls who feel the need to talk shit about Colt every chance they get.

  • The "experts" on ar15.com who don't even own an AR-15.

  • The guys whose only AR-15's are safe queens.

  • Guys who've never bothered to take any serious training with the AR-15.

  • Any clown from one of the Hometown forums who has a picture of himself with a rapper.

  • Guys who post on ar15.com about not getting their "props" at SHOT Show because they're from "arfcom."

  • Guys who use "arfcom" in posts on ar15.com.

I'll close with something that two former action guys said to me on different occasions: "We're all wannabes."

The issue many people have with this site as of late is the huge # of new users with little or no actual hands on experience or training and yet feel fully qualified to argue with those who have carried an actual M-4 into harms way.

If you learned everything you know about tactics from the Discovery Chanel, History Chanel, and video games...you need to be quiet when the adults are speaking.

If you can't register at 10-8 forums, you REALLY need to be quiet when the adults are talking about rifles that will see real world use and not chime in that your airsoft chinese stock, scope, mount, etc. is just as good as an Aimpoint, Larue, etc.

We were all new at one point...but new guys need to learn to be silent until they know WTF they are talking about.  No stories that have real world merit start out "No shit, there I was at the RANGE".  The local range is not usually where a gun sees hard use, especially if that range is square and has a rangemaster that likes everyone in a line.

I would add anyone who constantly harps on what is the cheapest way to do something...  If you can't afford a decent AR, don't get a crappy one.  Get an AK.

Also, anyone who starts a thread on how to bumpfire...  That is so juvenile that it escapes me how anyone mature enough to own a rifle could do it.

Maybe some people just never had to spend quality time with a 240...

I would consider this a Reader's Digest definition of the word "wannabe".

Something that really bugs me on this site is so many "wannabes" regergitate stuff they have read on the internet" instead of posting their own first hand experiences.

I have no problem with a guy who was not in the Military or is not a LEO.

But in the same breath I will say, if a guy hasn't been in harms way, it is probably best to "stay in your lane" and not get involved in conversations that you have no first hand experience with.

Just my .02

I don't see why it matters. Anyone who owns a rifle, pistol, shotgun is not a poser/wannabe in my opinion. Why label someone? If they want to be all tacticool, no skin of my ass. Whatever makes them happy. I think it's kinda ridiculous to own tactical load bearing vest or whatever that crap some of ya'll buy(minus you military guys of course), but hey it's your money and I'm glad you found something that keeps you sane in this crazy life.

Blatantly giving wrong information and not willing to accept your wrong and change your information just makes you a dumbass. We've all given wrong information at one point or another, that's part of life you get corrected and learn from it. The whole poser/wanna be crap reminds me of junior high school. The alleged punks(10 some odd years later after punk rocks heyday mind you) calling other kids "posers". Juvenile and petty.

If you enjoy firearms and enjoy them safely you're o.k. in my book, no matter if you do it in flip flops, shorts and a tank top or full battle gear.

I started browsing AR15.com when I was in high school.  I never considered myself a wannabe, and the knowledge I acquired from reading the true information, (weeding out the gossip) proved valuable to place me where I am today, in terms of my knowledge of firearms and handling

the definition given by blackriflebrat of

wannabe - someone who by their actions or words, pretends to have a level of knowledge, skill, association or experience that is superior to what they actually have.

seems right on to me.

The whole mindset of having an invincible arguement by being LEO/MIL is retarded.  Just because you were in the military doesn't automatically make your side of an arguement more correct.  Setting up an experiment, with conditioned variables, comparing two setups, builds, optics, etc., however, will give credit.

Basically you can't come out and bash the ideals of a range commando by simply saying "I was in Iraq [...]," as this isn't the end all, be all, and the range commando's opinion and arguement, may indeed be correct.

If Mil guy says Eotech and range guy says Aimpoint, you're not going to know one way or the other until you've tried both.  And one persons choice of setup may not be like the next persons, and may not work as well...

I've never even seen the GD board, but I imagine people who spend most of their time there, instead of on the techinical forums, reading or asking questions, are probably what I'd refer to as "arfcom wannabes"

+1...I think that is pretty good. I myself, do not profess to know everything, only what I have read in tech manuals, references, and been taught in the Guard (and to some degree learned here), as well as in my own experience at the range. I myself fall under the stigmatic term "weekend warrior" (which by the way I will refute, but only AFTER I come back from my impending 18 month deployment).

I also would point to the definition once laid down by Richard Marcinko (an author, Seal veteran, to say the least): "...walks around the Soldier of Fortune show wearing Erzats SEAL shit...".

My own personal definition: Someone who has never worn a Uniform running the ol' dick sucker about how they learned how to "shoot a round through a bugs ass at 1000 meters with their 16A5' when they was an Army SEAL (or Navy Ranger, or Marine green beret, take you pick)" OR about the bar fight where they took on 87 Marines and won, or...(Insert stupid story here)

1 will spat nonsense about what  a cool operator he was during <insert military or police action/conflict here>, then validate his claims with his second troll account

1 will answer the rant by claiming Colt > Everything Else

Who really gives shit.  I bought my first AR-15 about 2 months ago, why, it's a toy.  I wanted something I can take to the deer lease and shoot targets, cans, varmints.  I don't see myself buying a second one (if I wanted to the wife would kill me anyway).  Yea I'm buying some accessories for my pleasure and no one else's.  If I'm tagged a wannabe that's fine, it would help if you told me what I want to be.  I'm not training for anything and it's not for self defense, I have pistols for that.

I look at this site as knowledge base, a wealth of information for people, who like me, wants more info about my toy and nothing more.
