Thank you for sharing with us.  My in-laws live in Killen north of where the damage occured, but just talking on the phone with them gave me a good picture of it all.  What troubles me in any natural disaster is the fricken looting.  These SOB's should be shot on sight.  Home/buisness owners should have the right to protect their property as you cannot rely on law enforcement to do it for you.  They have more pressing isuues to deal with. As far as the comm goes, you would think we would have this worked out by now but the Fed's can't even do it yet. We are still working on getting that straight.

Thanks for the report, TBS.

After the day of the event you report that civilian assistance was discouraged.  Care to elaborate on that point, or expound on why?  Seems like that should be encouraged, if anything.

(and that reminds me, I really need to look into at least a HT and a technician's license)

Thank you for your assessment of the situation down there. I have one question though. You said civilian help is being discouraged, is it because you guys are having a hard time finding help with morals, honor and integrity or is it just them having a lack of training and doing things that are unsafe?

That's impossible. Somebody just posted here recently that ARES and RACES guys are a joke.

Appreciate the info, definitely not pretty down there. One of the most valuable things  I receive from this forum are the first hand accounts and assessments that are posted by individuals that share the same viewpoints on things as myself. Everything posted is valuable, it helps everyone formulate scenarios that they could possibly find themselves a part of.

Of course we also need to not lose sight of the devastation being experienced, and help out wherever possible. We are all connected on way or another. I am on my way to Tennessee with fuel and generators and chainsaw and parts to help family and friends.

Really appreciate the post.

What happened to all the money the .gov dumped into local agencies after 9.11 to improve coms btwn the agencies?

Good AAR TBS - supports the idea that HAM is important during SHTF, contrary to Duggan theorized in this thread.

i think the real eye opener for me here has been just how selfish our
society has become. even those in a low/no damage area with no real
threat other than a day or 2 of not getting to a gas station began
hoarding fuel to the point of pulling weapons and assaulting people to
cut in line a gas stations. if this was happening 12 hours after the
event i can only imagine how bad it would be after many days. luckily
power is coming back on and emotions are begining die down.

I'm curious what they want the gas for....to leave the area?  To run a generator?  General hoarding paranoia?

All of the above?

Beer Slayer, are there any Health and Welfare nets still running? Have a friend in SC who can't get in touch with his aunt in B'ham. I'm planning to put a piece of HW traffic through NTS but want to get it in the system as close to Bham as possible instead of waiting for it to bounce all the way over.

mostly just hoarding i think. many with generators but also many without just out filling up everything they can find.

I saw pictures of people in NOLA who were, I shit you not, trying to fill up ziploc freezer bags with gasoline.

How many IA freqs do your agencies have available to communicate on?

Are the comms on 800 down there?   Around here 800 doesn't hardly work when the sun is shining...

Thanks for the post!!!

Note to self,

Next prepping item is a genorator.

Another 5 gallons of gas.

I'm a little suprised that food & water wasn't as big as an issue as you make it. But you were there, Its logical.

Bottled water seemed to be the #2 demand.

They don't call it black gold for nothing.

Reguards

Edit; Can anybody anwser how effective two way radios would be in a disaster like such? Thanks in advance

Thank you again for sharing, and stay safe.

the county, city and our dept are 800. everyone else is vhf/uhf. our police radios don't talk to our own FD. the 800 system works pretty well here but we are mostly rural.

we have 2 mutual aid channels but they are shared statewide.

We have a couple of countywide IA channels, our primary and side channels for our own use, and about 5-6 other frequencies we can bounce to if need be. Not to mention all of our cars still have our OLD  pre-800 radios in them because many counties that haven't gone to 800  still use the old statewide IA freq...bottom line, we have about 20 freqs we could use. I am sure that in a massive SHTF that would still not be enough, but its more than what you have.

Aftre 9-11 there were all sorts of commo grants because of the commo shortfalls that 9/11 exposed in metro NYC. Maybe your county needs to tap into those grants the next time they upgrade their gear.

GOOD 2 way radios are very handy down here right now. cell service in most areas was spotty at best or simply down for almost 24 hours after the storm.

TBS, Thanks for the insight and AAR.

Did you see anyone useing the 2 way radios? Just curious as to what would be useful inlieu of HAM for person to person comms, the little commercial ones?

FRS radios are better than nothing and there are expedient methods [where legal] to extend their communication range DRAMATICALLY with a ~$50 device.

Ditch the 'tunnel vision'.

Look ^^^^ here Rusty.

Check the rules and regs to make sure it's legal to use in your country

Height above terrain is your friend.

FRS radio to radio could cover 15 miles+ easily in the right 'application'.

Think line of sight....

GOOD radios yes.

blister pack radios from walmart are junk. they won't work when you need them too.

What about Motorola?  Do those count as junk radios?

Someone else asked but I did not see an answer.  Have you seen any CERT members, or do you know if there are any CERT programs in the area?

Had another question about communication.  What roll do cell phones play?  Great alternative to dedicated agency radio, or last choice after smoke signals?

Thanks for the write-up.
