[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Mega Sports (Page 1 of 2)

| Can anyone tell me what's up with Mega Sports and their hours? |
| Weekends they are open until 2pm. From 2-5 is for pick ups only. The weekdays they are open until 5. After that is for pick ups and "inventory." This is what I was told the other weekend I was in there. That place is picked clean. Still got some handguns but they are all a bit high. Not much though. They still have bolt action rifles and shotguns as well as a couple semi-auto 22s |
|
I stopped in there recently on a trip back from up north and picked up some ammo in 22lr that no one local had any left of.
They had a guy at the front door checking FOID cards and if you did not have it or expired, you did not get inside. The addition to the store looks great, but the prices seemed a little high, but at the same time, they had stuff for sale and all my local shops were already sold out. |

I seriously said, What the fuck? And even asked another employee why, "Bosses orders", he said. For being a relatively nice, yet ridiculously overpriced gun store they sure do their best to turn off potential customers. Certainly swayed me to never go back. |
| They are closed Mondays until further notice. Yes, they do have inventory and rifles, even ARs to sell. I dare anyone to show that they are price gouging on guns, though, prices are typically MSRP, if you look on manufacturers websites. They may not be deal like you find on GB or internet, but those guys on the internet aren't giving it away either. You still have other costs to factor in. If ANYONE is looking for deals, you are about 2-3 months late. If you see it and it's there, BUY IT NOW, befofe it becomes unavailable due to supply or legislation. To be honest, Gunbroker and internet shopping is ripping more people off than Megasports is. As far as them limiting purchases, at least it gives everyone a chance to buy something, I was in there a few weeks ago, and a guy tried to purchase 4k rounds of .5.56, and they limtied him to 2k (2 cases). Guy was pissed off, but at least some other guys were able to get a chance to buy some ammo. Also, with all the limited availabilities, they have to check FOIDs and limit cell phone use (almost universal in all local gun shops) in order to reduce the chances of straw purchases. I'm sure we'd all be at a loss if Mega had to fold due to being involved in unlawful activity, Sometimes, I think locals take for granted what resources (especially the limited ones we have in IL) are available to us all for the sake of a "good deal." |

Bull Fucking Shit! I can walk into Cabelas (sells guns and ammo) Gat (sells guns and ammo) Bass Pro (sells guns and ammo) and any other store that sells guns and ammo and none of them have a hard on for checking FOIDs at the door. Fuck, a couple hour run north and they prolly wont even ask for the damn FOID. No we wouldn't be at a loss over Mega, Ive managed to only step in there a couple times, the last time being the final. Wont miss em one damn bit. |
| That's your opinion, but if they leave, what do we have left (not including internet, and who knows how long it will be until that is taken away)...Gander? They are significantly bigger than Gat (customer service, prices, inventory better? i don't think so). Their rules, of course, but if you consider this, if you don't have a valid FOID, unless you tell them you are buying a t-shirt or any non-exploding material, you aren't allowed to handle firearms, ammunition, primers...and with the amount of people standing in line to see/purchase a gun, they just don't have the time to sit around and chit chat only to find out that you can't even buy anything while there are other people waiting patiently for their turn. Blame it on the current gun culture and situation, but the truth is that is how it's going to be. Blame Obama, but don't blame Mega. I still dare you to find most of what you will find at Mega at any of the big box or mom and pop places. Might have been true 2-3 months ago, but DEFINITELY not now, and believe me, you'd miss them and any of the other gun places in IL if they just disappeared. And NO, I am not an employee there, but I do frequent ALL of the IL establishments, but I think a few people's opinions do not speak for everyone, mine being one of them. I shop there with REALISTIC not IDEALISTIC expectations and I AM NOT RUDE or expect to be treated like a KING, just a regular shopper who knows what he's looking for and knows where I can find it at this time and place given our ever-loving government's desire to take these things from law-abiding people. And even though you may not understand it, I don't blame Mega for trying to keep their noses clean, because being one of the biggest stores around, they also have a big bullseye on their shirt...you don't think IL is looking for a reason to shut them down for being involved in straw purchase and the like? I applaud them for what they are doing and don't blame them for the routines they have in place to protect themselves from bad people (and yes, there are bad people out there) to keep themselve in business for US LAWFUL CITIZENS; and I would ask other people reading this post to consider that when you speak badly of ANY of our IL establishments especially in this very anti-gun political climate. |

So demanding my "papers" just to enter your establishment is just another kick in the nuts. Which is the point I was attempting to convey. Mega had exactly jack shit for ammo when I was there, and what they did have was overpriced. Happened by Cabelas the following Saturday and was able to buy a few hundred rounds at a price less than Mega (yes, even Cabelas was cheaper). If you really think Mega is so great, and cant be beat, you need to get out more and away from this suburban shit hole. Theres plenty of great stores out there and even amongst the madness you can still find good deals.

A lot of people shop at Macys when Target will do. Having choices is good. Macys has higher prices because they sell higher end products. Megasports just charges more for the same merchandise. I am all for supporting local stores. Being a small business owner myself I understand overhead but I feel that the Megasports' mark up is unreasonable. In my experience their employees offer no greater insight or knowledge about the firearms they sell than employees of any other gun store. Their selection is decent but they give the illusion of having more variety than they actually do by keeping many examples of the same firearm on display. And in my experience their employees are the absolute worst at trying to strong arm you into a fiream they happen to have in stock as oppossed to the model you might actually want. |
| My son in-law bought a Sig SP2022 9mm from PSA in Oct 2012 over net for $404 delivered to my FFL. After he got it we drove to Mega to check the price. Mega wanted $669 same pistol + state of Illinois sales tax. Get real i ain't Bill Gates. Plus remember how fucking rude the sales people where before Gander opened up 6 blocks away. They wouldn't let you dry fire a firearm, so you could check the trigger. |

Yes, on that point, I do agree, but that is the law that we and especially they are governed by. It will be until we change it. So we can complain all we want, but it won't change anything. If you go to the other store, including Walmart, you can't touch the stuff without showing a FOID first, yeah, maybe it's not at the door, but you have go to show it a some point at any of those other places. Doing it at the door reduces idyl chict chat. Which is the point I was attempting to convey. Mega had exactly jack shit for ammo when I was there, and what they did have was overpriced. Overpriced is a matter of opinion. I did got to Cabelas myself today in Hammond, and unless you wanted traditional hunting rounds, 17HMR, Herters nylon cased 9mm, herters 7.62x39 or PMC 50BMG, then you are SOL. Yeah, they can be cheaper if it is in stock, that was what I was aluding to. If you need t right now, you can get it at Mega, and again, NO, I don't work there, but I was in there a couple days ago and they had a pretty decent selection of all calibers, including .223 but yes, it is priced the way it is. I never said that they were the cheapest...just available. Happened by Cabelas the following Saturday and was able to buy a few hundred rounds at a price less than Mega (yes, even Cabelas was cheaper). But yes you will pay for the convenience of having it available right now if that is the situation you are in. If you really think Mega is so great, and cant be beat, you need to get out more and away from this suburban shit hole. Theres plenty of great stores out there and even amongst the madness you can still find good deals. Mega is by far not the most convenient to me, and yes I do go to just about every possible outlet that I can, including the big box stores and on-line, but unless you have a special place known only to yourself, I've probablyt been and shopped everywhere you have been. Unfortunately work keeps me busy and if it is for convenience and one stop shopping, I can be pretty sure I can find it at Mega, but yes there will be a premium to pay, but as you know, it's no big secret. |

Macys has higher prices because they sell higher end products.
But you dont always need macys; some people just like the label on the clothes..... I guess my point is that I have no beef with any gun store, and its always good to have choices. If I dont like the price, I go elsewhere. The more stores there are, the more likely there will be competition for your dollar. |
| i also think mega is ooverpriced.. its a great place to widow shop, they have almost everything (before all this nonsense) but i havent or never will purchase a firearm there way too many other places to get it cheaper it is good if yoou need something right now, ammo, cleaning gear, etc but not for firearms the whole thing of checking the FOID at the door, not really an issue |

For example, look up PMR 30 on gunbroker, they run the gambit from $499 (Reserve not met) to upwards of $900. As of a couple days of ago, Mega had one IN STOCK at MSRP of $474 with 2 Mags. Could they have overpriced them or sell them online to make a HUGE profit? No, they kept their firearms at market price so that WE IL residents could buy one. In addition you are talking 3 months ago...the rules have DRASTICALLY changed since then, and unfortunately, "times, they are a-changing." As far as dry-firing goes..you break it, you bought it. |

Could you please share with the rest of us where those "cheaper" places are? it is good if yoou need something right now, ammo, cleaning gear, etc but not for firearms the whole thing of checking the FOID at the door, not really an issue That's what I was trying to say, but apparently all the rest of you know where are the good deals are. Like I said, I'm NO EXPERT, but I knew where the good deals were, but they are all SOLD OUT, NO BACKORDER |

All i ever asked when i get fucked is to be kissed. I mean no disrespect to you personally. I the word of that great American Rodney King "Can't we all get along" Nope, got a better job so that I can shop at places like these. My only point and interest is that I wouldn't want a place like Megasports to go out of business because a few people have chips on their shoulders because they were "treated badly." It happens to me all the time in all different places. I don't shop exclusively there, I "distribute the wealth" so to say, but I am simply saying that even though others might have bad experiences, I have not. Then again, I don't expect the people who work there to drool all over me and cater to my every whim and snide remark when they are busy. It's a business, and they seem busy enough, and they are trying to help everyone. What I typically hear is that everything is overpriced and they don't have good customer service or they treated me wrong or their workers are stupid...well that is not my experience, and I think other's should hear about it. I hear enough BS from self-important dumbs**ts (and I am not implying anyone on this post, just in general) while I'm standing at every gun place I go (not just Mega) to know that sometimes, it just isn't worth it to make everyone feel "special" or just leave them standing there making an A** out of themselves. And I bet I'm more than above average on gun knowledge and prices, but I don't have to sit there and prove it to every sales person that "I'm sooo smart!" Just tell them what you are looking for, ask you questions, and buy it or MOVE ON! If you don' like what they are selling or their prices, then don't shop there (as others have so eloquated in this thread) and go buy your bargain somewhere else. Why would anyone expect a salesperson to give you any more time if they know that you weren't going to buy anything ( e.g. "I can get a better price online")? But don't think that every person that shops there has the same experience. Again, I am only sharing my experiences...glad they were better than those who posted here. Sorry to disappoint those who think that I work there, but thanks for taking the time to follow this thread. Oh yeah, to the original OP...they are closed on Monday, then shortend hours other days for deliveries only, give them a call, tell them I sent ya |
| I've purchased two rifles from them after shopping around and finding that they had the best price, below MSRP on both. I've also purchased a safe from them, with delivery and installation it was below MSRP. Interaction with employees was good also, courteous, knowledgeable, and friendly. Granted, this was well before the frenzy. |
| Me personally I've never had a problem with their store. I've bought my last two guns from them and from I believe was a good deal. I had just stopped by the other day to check out the new addition when I was stopped by a guy at the door telling me they were only letting people in to pickup guns that were recently purchased. It just didn't seem right for a buisness to spend that kind of money for an addition and cut their hours. |

They just asked him if hewas picking up a gun. When he said no they just said "leave, go!". I am being exact in the wording and punctuation. They all can suck my jolly Rodger as far as I am concerned. They have been nothing but assholes. The owner was not even going to sell defense rifles untilhe had no choice, according to the person behind the counter when I asked 8 years ago. |

FOID to enter? How about FOAD and leave? Yup. As I said earlier, that turned me off so much, I didn't even end up buying anything, nor will I ever return. Unfortunately there's more than enough lazy asses that'll go there and gleefully show their papers and pay the overpriced cost of "convenience" and will keep them in business. |

Mark made the money to build his store by selling black rifles leading into the '94 ban. Before that he was just renting space in the Lily Cache Plaza about 1/4mi. east. I'm not going to defend the bullshit he is pulling now, and I have no plans to shop there if I have to wait in line, but the idea that he is somehow forced to sell black rifles is laughable considering how much money he has made on them in the 20 years he's been in business. |

I'm new to owning guns (been shooting friends for fun off and on for a few years) and went to Mega on the recommendation of a friend. This was late Jan/early Feb. I was able to walk in and browse around without any trouble at that time. I wanted to shoot a few different guns and hold a few as I was trying to decide what I wanted to buy. I couldn't shoot anything as every rental was don for cleaning and a check. Something they do twice a year for insurance according to the counter guy.
I got in the lil line (which it seemed 90% of people had no idea about) and when my turn came up I was able to walk around and held and asked a few questions on at least 7 different models of pistols. I told them that I did not have my CFP yet and inquired about putting money down on a gun and having them hold it. They said that they did not do that and I asked to look at a few guns to help me decide what I wanted. I never felt like I was bothering the guy and never felt rushed. Looked at everything from M&P's, XD's, SIG's, Kimbers, etc I was kinda all over. When I was done I thanked the guy and still didn't feel like he was bothered in the least. I ended up deciding on a SIG P220 and came back when I got my CFD about 2 weeks later and spent probably a good 20 min picking out what I wanted. The guy that was helping me was one of the managers and was pretty helpful. Like a clown when putting the slide back on I released it before locking it in. The slide shot off and onto the glass. Could they have been a lil more friendly in some ways, maybe a bit. Was the line thing a lil confusing, sure was. Did I care that the wanted to check my FOID when walking in? I thought it was a lil funny but didn't bug me at all honestly. I'm new to the gun world and I'm sure I have a TON to learn, but I try and do my research before purchasing and I'm happy with what I got from Mega and with the price I paid. |

Yeah, that counter person who said that was clueless. They were selling evil black rifles before and during (compliant versions) the '94AWB. Even back when it was only Mark and Tom in the little shop on 59 that got trashed by the tornado pre Lily Cache. I can maybe see why he went from cost + markup% to MRSP and even refusing to sell to Chicago residents, but the rest of these things leave me

Glad you had a good experience but for years we didn't even have to show a FOID to handle the firearm, as the FFL/salesman who was with you constituted the "FOID Holder" under the law. A few years ago they started requiring you to show it to handle the firearms. I assume some bullying from the AG's office helped with that. But to demand my FOID to walk in and look? If it's that big an issue take the "hours of operation" off your door and make it by appointment only. |
| You can read what happened to me in the other thread that got locked, but to make a long story short. the guy told me that if I was to come with someone and they dont have a foid they cannot enter? I wasnt thinking about it then but I wonder does that mean I cant bring my 7 year old son with me? Will they kick me out for that? Well I guess thats one way they will lose future customers? |

Yeah along the same lines, I've brought several friends to different places to go shooting, friends who never fired a gun before. In the last year and a half I've had four friends get FOID cards from Midwest Sporting Goods. Three of the four also purchased firearms from there. The main reason I went to Midwest (Mega is closer to me) is because they would let people shoot with me even if they didn't have a FOID. So if I had brought those friends to Mega, they wouldn't have been able to enter the building, let a lone apply for a FOID there, and then ultimately purchase weapons there. Definitely going to lose future/potential customers this way. |

Easy fix. Vote with your wallet. Patronize stores that have good customer service. I live about, oh, 7 miles from the Belleville Shooting Range, in downtown Belleville, IL. I drive, near 40 miles, over to Top Gun in Arnold, MO or Jay Henges in Fenton, MO to shoot because, well, every time I've been to BSR, I feel like I'm being eyeballed as a criminal. |

Under state law as long as the person with the FOID stays with the non-FOID person while they have the firearm they're OK. Chapter and frikkin verse (430 ILCS 65/2) (from Ch. 38, par. 83-2)
Sec. 2. Firearm Owner's Identification Card required; exceptions. (a) (1) No person may acquire or possess any firearm, stun gun, or taser within this State without having in his or her possession a Firearm Owner's Identification Card previously issued in his or her name by the Department of State Police under the provisions of this Act. (2) No person may acquire or possess firearm ammunition within this State without having in his or her possession a Firearm Owner's Identification Card previously issued in his or her name by the Department of State Police under the provisions of this Act. (b) The provisions of this Section regarding the possession of firearms, firearm ammunition, stun guns, and tasers do not apply to: <snip> (11) Unemancipated minors while in the custody and immediate control of their parent or legal guardian or other person in loco parentis to the minor if the parent or legal guardian or other person in loco parentis to the minor has a currently valid Firearm Owner's Identification Card; <snip> (15) A person who is otherwise eligible to obtain a Firearm Owner's Identification Card under this Act and is under the direct supervision of a holder of a Firearm Owner's Identification Card who is 21 years of age or older while the person is on a firing or shooting range or is a participant in a firearms safety and training course recognized by a law enforcement agency or a national, statewide shooting sports organization; <Facepalm> Thanks for the post and the reference. What's with the facepalm? There are some ranges that only permit FOID holders on the range, regardless of the law. For some its company policy, but for some I think it's for insurance purposes too (at least that is what I heard at one range). |

I went there for the first time since they remodeled back in October to get a uncle mikes mag pouch for an IDPA match. Was treated like crap when thats all I was buying. Guy actually said to me "Thirty bucks? What, no extra cash? We're trying to keep the place open here for you guys. We need you to buy things in order for that to happen." I just looked at him with a stunned look, like he was kidding. He then replies "Ok fine, you wanna get outta here I get it. Get your one item and leave, I see." That should have been my clue to never return.
I went there a week and a half ago to get a 0.17" brass jag for my AK74 (5.45x39 and a 22cal doesn't fit). Didn'tfeel like buying one online since I didn't need anything else and I was in the area. Once I got to the door I was asked why I was there and then treated like a second class citizen with questions about what I was looking for, have I been there before, "You look familiar.....". I told them "I came here for a brass cleaning jag, I didn't expect a jag-OFF!!!" and left. |

Buddy of mine actually got a deal on a S&W revolver at Mega last week (it was in some squirrly calibre so nobody wanted it). I gave him a ride to pick it up and the punk at the front door wasn't going to let me in the store because I wasn't buying or picking up myself.
It took a little work but I finally got the border guard to allow me in to the People's Republic of Megasports so that I could share the experience of standing in one of the slowest moving lines ever. The crowning moment for the whole experience was when an employee ripped by buddy a new one for using his smart phone to send a work e-mail. "NO ONLINE SHOPPING IN THE STORE" |
