I'm about to receive a 9mm AR pistol that I plan on turning into a SBR. So I have to have a 9mm hammer to avoid having to modify the bolt in the 9mm AR I got that part. My question is if I swap to a 556 upper will I have to swap the hammer as well or will the 9mm hammer function fine with the 556 upper?

There is technically no such thing as a 9mm hammer. A "9mm hammer" is the same as a full auto hammer except the sear hook is removed. The semi hammer is generally notched and auto hammers are rounded at the top. 9mm's use the rounded hammers which are original m16/ar15 equipment and work just fine. Since the hook is removed, you're good to go legally as well. |

ryknoll3 is misinformed and hitman is correct. Colt does make a 9mm-only hammer which will not work with a .223 carrier.
But ryknoll is correct that the better way to go is to use either a neutered M16 hammer or an un-notched AR15 hammer. The DPMS hammer works just fine for this purpose. You might reconsider getting your bolt ramped. This is done not for hammer compatibility, but to reduce the stresses put on the hammer pin and the pin holes in your receiver. Hammer compatibility is just a bonus. eta: 9mm hammer. Works with the standard 9mm bolt. Reportedly does not work with a .223/5.56 carrier (I've never tried).

Disregard the comment at JOES' site... "semi-auto" bolt you will not see today... COLT factory oddity from back in the '80s found i na handfull of factory COLT 9mm rifle.
Current crop of COLT pattern bolt as sold by various vendor since at least 2003 or earlier are of the M16 compatable flavor. |

| It looks like I have the rounded hammer so I'm set there. The member I got it from said it runs fine..... It's dirty and dry so I think I'm going to take that with a grain of salt. The bolt is not ramped so I'll look in to taking care of that in the near future. |
