This is my first (actually second) thermal scope. I ordered one about a month ago that had some problems, so I returned it, and this is the replacement.

I mounted it on my AR and when dry firing, the screen "jumps" and has horizontal lines that move across it and then fade. I would think that this would be "worse" when actually firing the gun, and I don't want to try that till I know if there's a problem with the scope. I don't think they would let me return it after it's been on a gun that's been fired.

Is this actually a problem or something to be concerned about?

This is an Armasight Zeus 336 3-12x42 60 Hz model.

Thanks!!!

Never witnessed what you've describe on my FLIR unit. Sounds like you need to call Armasight.

Nope not normal.  Call Flir/Armasight.

My ATN thermal don't even do that

Here is a new video. This is caused by chambering a dummy round. Again, I would think firing it would be even worse. The customer service person at the dealer I bought the scope from asked me if I "NUC-ed" the scope on startup. I'm not an expert but I think that would probably only fix image quality problems. It looks to me like something is physically "wrong" with the display.

So did you NUC on startup? Wouldn't hurt to try that if you have not done so...

It is definitely not normal. And I don't think it is related with NUC. NUC can not solve that.

Been dealing with the vendor on this, and he contacted Armasight. Their response was:

"I showed the video to my techs they have both agreed it is a normal part of the operation. There is nothing that will effect the unit in a negative way."

I posted the videos on another forum where there's a lot of NVG discussions and one person who has the same kind of scope described exactly the same thing happening with his that is occurring with my scope. He said that it hasn't been a problem. I guess I'll use the scope and if there's a bigger problem, at least there's a record of emails where I noticed and recorded it before it had ever been on a gun while it was fired.

You should skip the dealer and just call armasight. They're good to deal with.  I've owned about everything they make and I don't think what you describe is normal and I'm pretty certain it has nothing to do with nuc.

If it is a normal part of the operation, why other armasight products doesn't do that?

If it was me, I wouldn't accept a product with that issue. It is not a cheap product.

This is a little concerning as I just purchased a Zeus 75mm the other day and I would not consider this "normal" compared to the other videos I've seen. I hope you have better luck going through armasight directly. Keep us posted.

I owned Zeus 75 336, Zeus 42 640 and a Zeus Pro 50 and none of those do that.  I get a little hiccup like that though in my dvr when I shoot (totally normal on all thermals, from the cable moving a little bit).  Too me it looks like there's a loose connection in there somewhere.  I bet it'd be way more pronounced when you shoot.  After having such good luck dealing with Armasight, I'd almost be surprised if that's actually what they told your dealer.  Not trying to start anything but in my dealings with them it's been no problem to send it on in.

I'm now dealing directly with the customer service folks at Armasight. You guys convinced me that despite what the vendor, and I guess the techs at Armasight said, there is an issue.

I'll report on what comes out of it in case anyone ever experiences the same thing, but it sound like this is not a common problem.

It seems the problem is not with the display but with the thermal sensor as the icons in the image aren't affected.

I actually chuckled when I read that. What you are seeing is in fact not normal and is already effecting the unit in a negative way. In all likelihood the cause of the problem will affect the unit further, become worse over time, and result in failure.
So far i'm not real impressed with the techs assessment that a shock jittering display is a normal part of Amasight's operation.

Keep us updated as I am genuinely interested in Armasight's final response.

What ever came of this? I just got an armasight 75mm and it has the tiniest screen jump when I dry fire the gun. Not sure if it'll be made worse or not at the range and I'm curious what their answer was to you

That's not normal and it has nothing to do with NUCing the detector.

You either have detector that is on the verge of failure or a bad connection between detector and processor.

It's been a while but here's an "update" if you want to call it that. I sent the scope back to Armasight after finally convincing them to issue an RA.

It was delivered back to Armasight on Dec 19. Since then I've sent two emails and called and left three messages since nobody answered and no response.

Not real impressed with their customer service so far. I'll give a little benefit of the doubt since the holidays were right at the same time I sent it back but at this point, how can you not at least answer an email or call someone back?

So my brand new reap-IR is doing the same thing. I'll try and get a video. Anyone else with a reap-IR see this?

I sent mine back last week to Armasight for the same thing. I'll be emailing them this week to see what they have discovered and what they intend to do to fix it. Very discouraging that you have not received any communication back from them yet.

Are you using their old Armasight e-mail addresses or their new FLIR e-mail addresses?

The manual that came with my brand new unit states to still email [email protected]. It's active and working as I initially emailed that address and then had someone email me back and provide their personal email for future contact to get my return label and RA #

I got my scope back this morning. It's still doing the same thing, maybe worse. I'm at a loss. They had it all that time and didn't address the actual problem. I'm not sure what to do. I'd like to return it for a refund, but I bought it through another vendor, and not Armasight so I don't know how that would work considering this is not the exact scope I actually bought from the dealer. This one with the screen jumping is the second scope I've sent back to them. The first one was basically beat to shit (lens badly scratched with dings, dents, and dirt all over the housing) when it was supposed to be new (not sure whether that was Armasight or the dealer's doing).

Ugh....

[#25]
Well, I sent Armasight an email about this, stating that I wanted to return it for a refund and Andrew @ Armasight called me back immediately.

He reiterated that this was a totally normal part of the scope's operation and that 3 techs had been over the scope and not found an actual problem.

He went on to say that this "flicker or jump" is related to the scope's shot counter, and that the sensitivity of the shot counter can be changed to keep this from happening. There is nothing in my manual about a shot counter so I asked Andrew if this setting is something a user can even mess with. He said I could change it, and he will email me instructions, as the manuals that are currently shipping with their scopes do not address 100% of their functionality as they have updated some of the components/features.

I'll post the instructions as soon as I get them so anyone else who might be experiencing this can try it.

I'm going to go ahead and shoot the gun with the scope on there. Andrew assured me that if I had any problems he'd take care of it.

If I get mine back with zero fixes then I will not be happy. They have had it during prime coyote calling time and the only reason I sent it in was so I wouldn't cause more damage and then be at fault for it. I believe I also dealt with Andrew and sent an email on Wednesday to check the status and have yet to hear anything back

I have actually used the scope on an AR a couple of times now. Once to sight in, and once last weekend to shoot an armadillo that's been tearing up the yard at a relative's place out in the country.

I have not noticed the screen jumping when shooting, and so far there seem to be no negative effects.

I never heard back from Armasight on getting instructions for adjusting the sensitivity of the "shot counter". I think the rep at Armasight made a mistake and this feature is only found on the "Pro" models and was too embarrassed to follow up? I'll send them another email, but as of now I am quasi-satisified that this thing is going to work the way it's supposed to.
2/6/2017 11:35:52 PM EDT
[#28]
I sent mine into armasight for the same reason as mentioned above. I got my scope back after 2 weeks with no info of what was repaired or replace but the problem still persists. I emailed the customer service rep and hey said they replaced the "board" but again. No difference in the problem what so ever. Far from satisfactory customer service.

Connection problem, could be from board to board, looks like power may be dropping out.
Other then making sure batteries are held in tight by spring pressure, your only option is to send it for repair.
Tap on the unit with a plastic screwdriver handle not beat the $hit out of it but try and replicate the problem.
If you can include a note on what is happening and under what circumstances. Write down what triggers the problem, in this case its vibration/shock. This is very helpful to tech, reproducing the problem makes fixing it much easier.

Good luck

Damn this sucks I'm was getting ready to by a thermal this week. Either a Armasight 640 30hz 42mm or 75mm
Or a
APEX XD50 maybe and a cheap spotter

Maybe I should consider a pro model but someone said their IRD THERMAL was doing it also. Thats a lot of money to just get the run around.

My real-IR does it if I sit there and jack around with it in my office. On the rifle shooting it, I can't see it at all. I feel like this is a completely normal aspect of the sight and there is nothing to worry about. When watching industry videos of various thermal sights, many also do this.

This won't be a popular view, but as an owner, I believe it is a non-issue.
