The reason for this thread is to simply ascertain how common problems with Eotech optics are. I'm not doing a poll because I believe the results would be skewed by people who don't own the optic. Thanks for your cooperation. |

EOTech 511, rev D. Had a problem draining batteries and was sent back to EOTech where it was upgraded to rev E. No problems with the sight afterwards; it was sold. EOTech 512, rev F. No problems at all in 4 years. Bought to replace aforementioned 511 due to my dislike of N-cell batteries. |

512 Rev F. Bought used in mid 2008, if I remember correctly it was manufactured in 2007. Had the battery draining issue. Sent it to L3, who fixed it for free, and three years its totally fine.
552 Rev F. Bought used, 2009 Manufacture. Been good to go for the whole three days and zero rounds I've owned it.

One of the older models - sorry don't have specifics although it took N batteries. Moved from first-line weapon to plinking toy because of batteries issue which went flat in storage, flat in use, flat period. Nice piece of equipment, but nothing i would depend on.

I've owned (and sold):
511FN 512 revF 552 revF 552 revF 553 553 These were all civilian owned. I can't tell you date of manufacture since they're long sold. They were all bought after January 2008 and sold before May 2009 (except for the FN - it's on my buddy's rifle since this last trip). I didn't have any problem with them. I also didn't put enough rounds through them to do anything. From May 2010 to early August 2010 I went through 4 unit issued 552 revF's. They were unit purchased in 2006. They all failed on me. This also happened with unit issued 551's and 552's for others in my unit. The biggest issue was the battery compartment. There were also electronics problems, but I'm no engineer. All our attempted trouble shoots for those didn't work. We were in the middle of Iraq so we couldn't send them back to L3. They are now tossed in a box in the Arms Room until DRMO. |

551.A65 manufacture date of July '08.
No issues aside from having to replace the batteries every four to six months. Replaced it with the SWFA M2 Aimpoint AAFES package. It's looking for a new job now. |

i used to use any eotech512 before i switched to an acog but i used it for over a year and never had a single problem with it. ive heard and read about the problems many people have had with their eotechs but i never had a single issue with mine. the sight worked great and it worked so good for me that im about to buy another one to put on my new 6.8 build. |
| 512, Rev. F. I bought it in late 2007 new from a seller that used to be here on ARFcom. I had two issues: One, after about 2 years, one of the little battery springs and "pad" came out along with the battery when I swapped them. I put it back in and it worked fine. The second also occurred at about the same time...the reticle seemed to wash out during bright sunlight (especially when the sunlight was bearing on the target). I'm not sure if this was normal or not. I sold it last year (after informing the buyer about the issues), and I replaced it with an Aimpoint ML3. |

I've had 3, two 512' rev F's and an XPS-2-2. The 512's both had bad battery boxes which EoTech replaced. The XPS 2-2 had no problems. I took one of the 512's and the XPS to Afghanistan, the 512 rode on an M4 and the XPS on a 249 SAW. They worked like a charm and gave me no problems. I replaced the battery box on the 512 right before I deployed.

552 rev F... a verrrrrrrry long time.. put on multiple calibers.. about 10,000+ rnds..
only recently had to put a new rubber battery contact in it... that's it.. damn thing won't die...  knockin on wood
XPS3-0... 3 mnths old.. no rnds.. reciever is apart at the moment.. sent back due to fading on the top and right edges.. looks good now.. and back off i go to pray she holds up like her brother.. knockin.. knockin.. knockin..

512 Rev? - Received as part of a trade, older model in older packaging, worked well. Sold about a year ago.
516 A651 - Bought a month ago, has build date of Nov 2010. Have only used it twice, both times worked flawless. Civilian owned, range use. |

I have a 512 that I've owned for six years, it been to a week long carbine class, used in subzero weather, in the rain etc. I have NEVER had a problem with it, no batteries exploding, no fading reticle, nothing. ETA not sure of the revision, but six years ago is definite. (I'm at work, EOTech is at home, 600 m.i difference) |

Rev F bought in late 2007 No problems to date, does not drain batteries even sitting in the safe. I had 2 511's Both rev F bought early 2007 Traded for weapons lights. Didn't have any issues except nobody around me stocked "N" batteries. |

I have owned 2 EOTech 512.A65 Rev F's. I bought them in mid 2008. Item 1: I have had CONSTANT problems. Needed a new battery box (kept shutting off under recoil, replaced under warranty). Then needed servicing for a broken intensity button. Finally, the reticle went wonky last year. EOTECH would NOT replace it, but offered to service it for a fee. I still have it on my ST-22.... but will shitcan it later this year. Total shots fired under it: 1536 rnds of .223/5.56 and about 2000 rds of 22LR. Item 2: Operated without trouble. Sold late last year becuase item 1 convinced me not to trust EOTech. Total rds fired under it: 1894 rds of .223/5/56 |

Eotech 552 Rev F - Purchased 2004 for use on deployment. Used on issue M16A2, M240 and later M16A4 in AOR. Also used on personal AR's. No problems to date.
Eotech XPS - Purchased Mid 2010 - No problems to date. |

I had a problem and sold it. The advertised battery life was well exaggerated and when it did die, the light didn't blink like it was supposed to when you turn it on to notify you that your battery was going to die soon. IT just up and died while shooting. Maybe they've improved, but I wasn't willing to preemptively swap batteries every month or so. |

1 made in 07 rev. F 1 made in 08 rev. F 1 made in 2010 No problems at all I did have a 511 dated 09, Sold it off. Poor battery life I also have a 511 version of a Bushnell Holosight N battery version, Same battery life problems, but I have it on a seldom used AK47. |

I have had two 552s.
One was a Revision F. It functioned perfectly but I sold it after a few years. The other one was made in 2002. I sold it to a friend and bought it back from him a couple of years later when he was having some financial problems. He had not changed the battery and it had leaked all over. The scope still worked, but I sent it back to EoTech and they charged me $25 for a new battery compartment. They also upgraded the buttons to Rev F standards gratis. The scope has always functioned fine and I still have it. Neither scope drained batteries that I noticed. |

552-D1 Rev F. 555 Rev F. 552 Rev F. 552 Rev F. 511 Rev F. 553 Rev F. (SU-231/PEQ) XPS2-2 ETA, as other posters have said, I'm a civie. No jumping out of helicopters and stuff like that. However, I did have the 552 Rev F's mounted on uppers that I used with my M16 lower when I had it. I went through quite a few cases of ammo via mag dumps with those two Eotechs. ETA again: Ran standard Energizers until switching to Energizer Lithiums in the AA models this year. Have Surefire CR123's in the 123 versions. The battery life in the 511 does suck though. I'll probably trade it for an XPS at some point. Update-I did sell the 511 and picked up another ACOG (TA-33). Just got tired of the battery life. Still have the other Eotechs and still love 'em. |

I have a 512 I purchased in July 2010. It has had no problems. It holds zero just fine, and the batteries do not drain when the unit is off. I have not taken it through battle, or dropped it or anything like that, but as far as a civilian AR sight it has given me no trouble.

Reticle fuzzy. battery drain (almost every time I turn it on, the low battery indication blinks.) Random failure to operate....hit all the buttons, nothing. Remove batteries for 5 minutes, try again, works. contacts are all cleaned multiple times, new batteries, etc. |

Sorry, to post this without Eotech usage Data, but thought it might be important. It might give a more accurate feedback of real issues if those with battery drain and/or compartment issues stated if they were using quality Lithium Batteries or not. This could also be important info from those NOT having battery issues too. May help other Eotech owners chose the best battery for better reliability.. Battery brand and type from everyone posting could be very informative and could possibly reveal a pattern and certainly give you a better detailed analysis of Eotech reliability and possible causes/remedies. Again sorry for breaking the "rules" and if you want me to delete this post(or the contents) just send me a PM etc. and i will be happy to do that. |

It's OK - I see what you're saying, BUT: Battery type should NOT be an issue. While I agree that lithium batteries are the best choice, there's no reason why the sight shouldn't work with decent alkalines - EOTech doesn't state you have to use lithium batteries, so I can't use that as an excuse. It might make a difference in run time and how quickly the battery needs to be replaced, but it should not affect excessive battery drain. In my case with the 511, it caused the batteries to die within weeks, if not days, of just sitting in the safe. |
