[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Noveske NSR - Coming Soon! (Page 1 of 3)

The NSR handguard was designed with the goal of being the lightest and smallest free floating forend option to the M16 family of weapons. The width of the NSR handguard before accessories have been installed is only 1.48" The NSR handguard will be available for sale as standard equipment on our rifles and upper assemblies, as well as a separate component for sale to the public. On rifles and upper assemblies including the Vltor MUR upper receiver, the NSR handguard comes pinned to the upper receiver for perfect alignment of the 1913 top rails, and creates an anti-rotation interface with the upper receiver the same as our existing Lo-Pro offerings. We plan to offer this in 7", 9", 11", 13", and 16" lengths.

The KeyMod inter-locking rail system is a collaboration between Vltor Weapon Systems and Noveske Rifleworks. Separately, both companies were in development of their own systems, but later realizing that both systems were similar, a standardization of the KeyMod system came to be.

The KeyMod system offers a mounting platform for a variety of (future) accessories and components. The days of the Picatinny Rail (MIL-STD-1913) are numbered. The future of the direct mountable accessory is here and now. The KeyMod self-contained components/mounting hardware index and V-block onto the platform, achieving a secured and accurate hold to the system, while separate lugs take the recoil force off the fasteners. The pass through attachment method eliminates the need for loose screws and backing plates that can easily be lost, or difficult to install. Another advantage of the KeyMod system over the 1913 system is the direct attach eliminates the need for the 1913 system as a "middle Man" thereby reducing weight and accessory off-set from the center of the handguard.

Finally, in the near future, the direct-mount KeyMod components will include items such as, 1913 rail sections, polymer covers (in various lengths and colors), hand stops, QD-Sling Mounts, bipods, K9 barricade supports and more. Also, the NSR handguard system will have an optional heat shield which installs through the front and does not occupy any KeyMod holes. Please follow our website for future KeyMod developments.

How does the rail interface with the upper receiver to facilitate the Anti-Rotation design?

I prefer FF tubes/handguards(i.e. DD Lite, Larue, EVO rails, etc) which do not "allow" rotation(not like it happens anyways if properly installed).

It's just my OCD'ness.

Check the gear scout link I think it may tell you.  It has a pin that is above the gas tube that needs a hole drilled in the upper receiver to fit into.

I know this is Noveske we are talking about here, but, I would hope it would be on price point with other similar rails. By similar rails I mean the Troy TRX, VTAC Extreme, Midwests new Gen II's etc. Other tubular type modular rails that is.

If this is in the price range of the troys and sampsons, then it will be my new rail.

For anyone who is comparing, this rail is a quarter inch narrower than the troys and over a quarter narrower than the sampsons.

Stupid question: What advantage is there to a modular system that lets me attach rails? Aren't rails themselves modular?

Seems a bit like having to hammer a large nail into a wall so you can put a metal screw in the nail.

Having asked that, I like this thing as a forend. Let us know when it goes on sale!

Lighter means less to schlep.

Smaller diameter means easier to grip.

Flexibility means you to make it like YOU want it.

My understanding is that the rails will help you attach current accessories, but future ones will attach directly to the keyholes, without the rail intermediary.  Having the attachable rails makes the system backwards compatible with current accessories.

Did I miss where the rail's (and barrel nut's) weight were listed?

Agreed. Thin is good, but at some point there is such a thing as thin enough. I have Noveske marked VLTOR VIS uppers that I think feel just right with low profile ladder type rail covers. I have a Samson/Rainier Evo handguard on another rifle, which I also like the feel of...on that particular gun.  Not sure I'd care for one that's over 1/4" thinner than the Samson. It might feel ok with the covers they're going to offer, but I'm not really seeing the point of making a rail ultra thin, and then adding covers to thicken it back up.

That said....it looks cool as shit and knowing me, I'll probably end up buying one.

Man this looks like a really nice rail setup.  Just in time also, I was getting ready to by the JP rail but looks like I will be waiting.  Any chance do we have a date of when they will be available or when they will have the longer sizes available either?

Thank you

A Gen II K-9.  The Noveske Shooting Team designed and developed the first K-9 back in 2009 during 3 gun competition.  They work well for certain situations in competitive shooting off barricades and unstable positions.  A compliance device was not something considered but I suppose that would work too!

Good thinking.  I'd rather get shot than skewered with a bayonet...and I'd rather be skewered with a bayonet than tenderized with the K-9.

"***Edit 1/27 @ 8:20PM - NSR 11" Retail is $245***"

Well there goes that. I guess when they said "in the range of the higher end rails" they meant quad rails since the higher end tube rails all cost about 180$. There is no way I'm going to pay the same amount of money for a simple tubular extruded forend as I would a quad rail. That's just stupid. Noveske continues their practice of pricing (granted high quality) products way out of their worth. I'll just go with the Rainier/Sampson tube or maybe the apex since they both look better anyway.
1/30/2012 7:32:59 PM EDT
[#41]
I wonder what 13" cost then.

Seems on little high side for non-quad rail. Maybe because it's a Noveske. :)

A slave pin locks the upper receiver and rail together in the same way the current Noveske rails do.

Not a stupid question at all.  The NSR-11 wasn't developed to be just a tube rail with bolt on rail sections, it was designed with a keyhole interface to incorporate entirely new pieces negating the need for the 1913 sections.  The keyholes are also beveled on the back which permit a use to install, remove, and reinstall an item with it retaining zero.  If you are running a light/ laser combo, or offset optic, that will be a nice feature.

This is obviously more than just a simple extrusion, and with the above in mind, the price doesn't seem out of sorts to me.  I know people will not like it, or wish it was cheaper, but that is part of life.  There are lots of things I can't afford, I feel their pain, but still manage to sleep at night.

I think I covered most of the questions, if I missed something, let me know and I'll answer it if I can.

1/30/2012 8:25:51 PM EDT
[#45]
Maybe a stupid question, but wouldn't it make sense to have the smaller part of the keyhole face back towards the user?  Most everything we mount on there, from barricade teeth to fore-grips get pulled (or pushed) back towards the rifleman to snug the rifle into your shoulder, having the large slot back there would be where it comes loose to remove the accessory.  Or am I missing something totally obvious?

And with the TRX, Daniel Defense MFR, and any other modular freefloat, you can't have rail XTM or KAC panels unless you start buying 2, 3, or 4" rail sections and start bolting them on.  This is a seamless integration and will give many shooters an opportunity to put a protective panel right where it belongs and not worry about adding weight to the gun.  I see why it's 1.48" to allow for those polymer panels to go in without making it feel like a paper towel roll.

I'll admit, this will be my first Noveske piece outside of a QD plate under the RE.

And I look forward to having my gun run very very hard and not have to wear a set of gloves.  Unless someone provides a polymer panel attachment method that keeps the slim contour of the TRX VTAC or Daniel Defense MFR without screws, this whole system is a great idea.  Responding to another posters statement of thinner foreends––-it's like having an adjustable backstrap on a MIAD, Glock, S&W M&P, XD, etc.  You can fatten it up should you choose to.

The only thing I'm going to ask John Noveske to consider: an American flag on either 3 or 9 o'clock.

Stick––Do you have any photos of the installation procedures for this rail?

IIRC correctly, its using a new barrel nut which is easier to install.  The tubular section is a very snug fit, but not enough that you need to tap it onto place.  The screws lock the unit to the barrel nut, and the slave pin between the receiver and NSR maintain a mechanical antirotation.

No photos shot of it at this point showing the process.
