Continuance of Brownell's 1-12 retro barrel testing. Put approximately 600 rds shooting various ammo under various conditions in last 6 months or so. This is from last session in Oct 2015. Fired 110 reloads at 100 yds prone off a sand bag. Pic of rifle and targets is from a previous shooting session but same less than $500 budget rifle build as it sits.
Not quite retro but mostly surplus M-16 parts less the receivers, optic/mount and barrel. Shot decent without any wind for a change and a little better quality bullet than last session. Used Hornady 2267 (FMJ) and 2266 (SP) bullets that I put a little more effort into than previous outing using Remington bulk bullets. Targets with rifle pic are using the Remington bulk 55 grain FMJ bullets that I wasn't really impressed with for bullet dimension consistency.

Whose 55 gr soft points were you using?
Hornady H-2266 baggie packed 10 cent each retail around here. Nothing great but they are fairly consistent. I took the Remington bullets I used previously in trade and they were about as inconsistent as any I've ever measured. No rhyme or reason but I wouldn't recommend them unless the only thing available. Appears the targets showed the same results my calipers showed. Only variables changed was a little wind, a couple minor scope adjustments and a different day. The Hornady bullets also have their flaws but probably the best out there for the coins if one wants to sort them. This time of year in the past I've seen the approximate 6K bulk packs on sale for as low as $365 with shipping included. We shall see what this year brings very shortly. |

What scope mount are you using?
It's a Colt marked B-Square off a match target rifle. Picked up off GB auction for $16 delivered and was collecting dust. Mount had survived Katrina down in Alabama and looked a little rough in auction pics, hence no bids. Still has a little surface rust on the screws but cleaned up decent. Not the best mount but price was right and it works. |
