New question that Goggle could not answer.  Does anyone make a three way gas block (regular, suppressed, and shut off completely for single shot fire) for a gas (DI) system?

I was looking at the LWRCI REPR and it has the multi position valve for the piston.  It seems like I good idea.  Anyone have any insight into the multiple position idea?  But based on an earlier post concerning piston and DI systems, I am wondering if such a set up exists for the DI system.

Noveske Switch Block is one I'm sure there are others

Depends on what you are wanting to do?  run supersonics un-suppressed and suppressed....or.....supersonics un-suppressed and heavy subsonics suppressed.  both require a little different set-up.

run supersonics un-suppressed and suppressed:  check out the Noveske Switchblock  I have seen them adapted to run the other way also.

supersonics un-suppressed and heavy subsonics suppressed: Paladin machine makes one that is pretty popular.  again, I've seen the switchblock adapted to run this way also.

Caliber, barrel length, and gas port position make a difference.  Tell us more about the set-up you are wanting to use and maybe get a nailed down answer.

I want a 20 inch 308 that can fire traditional rounds as well as be suppressed.  I had not considered (and did not know it existed) subsonic 308 rounds.  However, I do like the idea of being able to turn off the cycling mechanism and have a semi auto that can become a single shot (and guess for that feature the subsonic would be nice).

I have looked and seriously considered the:
DPMS SASS (DI)
LWRCI REPR (piston)
Having American Spirit build one (DI)
Larue OCR
Armalite

I would like to get a surefire quick detach 308 suppressor for it as I have good luck with their products, but am not committed to this brand.

I would like whatever suppressor I get to be compatable with my Rem. 700 setup in 308.

308 winchester is a horse of a different color with subs, they do exsist, not near as easy as in the smaller platform.....here is a sub-sonic .308 win. thread that has been running for quite a while on Quarterbore.

In the larger frame 20" barrels most of which you are going to find is rifle length gas systems, a 220 SMK only requires 8 to 10 grains of powder to hit 1,050fps, with that little gas it is more on the difficult side to get the rifle length system to cycle and with that little powder in the .308 case there are powder lay and volume problems, unless some of the suggested info in the thread above is used.....most of the ARs you will see around here running dedicated subs are going to be on the smaller frame and use carbine or pistol length gas systems.....there are dedicated subs for the larger .308 frame, like the .302 Whisper, but are shorter than a standard .308 win.

Firing supersonics through a suppressor increases the back pressure and dwell on the system, the adjustable systems I've seen for the .308 rifle use a smaller port when using a suppressor to reduce the back pressure on the system......when using dedicated subs you usually need the opposite, a larger port to increase the gas to get the system to run...

Of the rifles you listed I've been looking hard at the Larue base rifle, but ending up with something a little different.

Firing supersonics through a suppressor you will still have the sonic crack ( louder than a 22LR ) but the rifle length system will run, and not be over gassed with the adjustable gas block. and you always have the option of the pull bolt.

good luck on your tough decision

Great information, so lets not worry about subsonics as it appears they will not perform reliably in the 308 I want.

What about the idea of being able to make the system not cycle so you have to hand charge the round each time?

And what do you think about the side chargers v. the traditional charging handle?

ssk uses an adjustable gas tube, paladin machine makes a 3 way gasblock and its very well made and less than half the cost of the noveske unit and he will make them to order for any barrel diameter, in stainless or chromoly.

They use an adjustable gas block not tube.

Thanks, I was going to go back and check both of mine to see if I missed something.       The SSK block is really neat, and works perfect....a little propietary though.

Of the three being discussed ( SSK, Paladin, and Noveske )  I use all three plus a variaty of set-screw type from PRI, JP, etc....., the Noveske by far is my favoriate, can set it up for supers or dedicated subs, it is limited to being mounted in front of the handguard.  For mounting under the handguard ( in a pistol length gas system ) I go with the Paladin or PRI, the Paladin does have to use custom length gas tubes, also had to tweak the bend a good bit after install so it wouldn't bind the carrier key, but I do that with any build.

Paladin is difficult to get under most HG's.  I have two and I like the function, but they are bulky.  I can turn off the gas to shoot subsonic 6.8, then flip it and shoot the 85 TSX at 3050 FPS.   Makes a 6.8 versatile (and if 320 pf or Crenca come here to tell me that "versatile is overstating things and you're just a promoter", then we  can go with just plain fun )

I also have a JET adjustable, but it is not a switch.  It is more like the PRI with set screw, so it can't be changed on the fly.  It is made of Ti, is very light, and very compact.

The Noveske is one of my favorites ( don't have one yet) as it has the knob, which is easy to access, but the only compromise there, is that it cannot go under a GB.  They will pin it to the barrel, but I wonder what could happen if you smashed the knob on something?

Paladin's block for the Whisper is very well made and quite precise.  It easily fit under free floating handguards with 1 3/4" ID such as the YHM light rail and the DPMS tubes.

You'd have to contact them to understand if they provide port sizes appropriate to things other than 300 Whisper (300/221 Fireball).

My Paladin's are made for 6.8 SPC, so the port sizes were given to Thomas before he made them. I am currently using a VLTOR CASV-EL, and the "cutout" for the FSB works very well, to allow access to the flip lever.  I like the slimmer handguards, like the Troy TRX, and you can't get the Paladin anywhere near that HG, because the rearward portion (into which the gas tube goes) sticks back from the gas port by almost an inch.

I ordered a Paladin for my .556 10.5" upper today.  I hope it fits easily under the guards like he claims because I have a specter length rail.

AAR pending.

They're pretty tough....I think if the knob got hit hard enough to prevent operation you might want to check your scope for a cracked lense.....the other gas blocks discussed in the thread ( PRI, SSK, JP, Paladin, etc....) are "soft" compared to the Noveske.....the Noveskes are treated, hardness akin to that of a reloading die.....one reason they operate so smooth.....the ones we modified had to be ground, a drill bit will barely scratch them...

Nothing against the others, I own and use all of them.....the Switchblock works very well for me, starting a couple large frame builds with them, we'll see how they work out....

Switchblocks we've set up:

carbine, mid, and rifle length gas systems
supersonics / unsuppressed.....using the large port
off
supersonics / suppressed.....using the small port

carbine length gas system
supersonics / unsuppressed....using the small port
off
heavy subsonics / suppressed.....using the large port

two gas block system, pistol and mid length
supersonics / unsuppressed.....using the mid position large port
heavy subsonics / suppressed....using the pistol position large port
supersonics / suppressed....using the mid position small port

as can be seen in the pic, the switchblock will work with handguards like the TRX in the pistol position with a little mill work.....working on a through / under the handguard pistol position switchblock with a remote operating rod.....

I am using the Paladin 3-way gas block with the short arm.  I had to put the arm in the closed position, then radius the valve head so the round hand guard would screw on.  Then measured distance of gas block, cut opening in round hand guard to operate lever.  The gas valve touched the inside of the tube on the other side, so I removed and took some metal from ID of Tube.  I have a opening on right side of gas block to operate and still have top of tube to install full rail if needed.  I mounted a 3"rail on right side for sure -fire to hunt hogs.  A little work and a $40 Tube will function and easier on my hands than my Quad-Rails.
