The reduced reciprocating mass is a great benefit for keeping the barrel on target. My main plan is for my super lightweight build. Imagine this carrier coupled with a extremely lightweight barrel, magnesium upper and lower, Aimpoint T1, JP Silent Buffer and a BCM KMR13. This should push the rifle weight down to the low 5 pound range easily.

Sweetness!!

Any plans to have the uppers & lowers available as stripped units?

I like that even better.  If you drill too much, start again with a new screw.  Or have several sizes made up in advance, and swap em out to find what size works rather quickly.

I drilled one of my gas blocks for a set screw and then drilled the set screw out in kind of the same way. Like a jet in a carbeurator.

If you like that then just use our regular, patented Govnah which is modular:
Below are liniks to a new two part article that came out last week on our patented, tool less modular adjustable gas block:
Part 1: http://www.recoilweb.com/micromoas-govnah-adjustable-gas-block-38489.html
Part 2: http://www.recoilweb.com/micromoas-govnah-adjustable-gas-block-pt-2-of-2-38639.html

You can see that the Govnah is based on actual port sizes from NO port
to whatever you want to drill.  In the event that your barrel is
overgassed and you don't want to run suppressed, I personally would have
1 port match your barrel's gas port which would be your adverse
position (for use when dirty or using weak ammo) and you would also use
that to install/align the block for installation then work your way up
like you would on the baby Govnah to a port size that locks your bolt
back on the other port.
Or go with a 3 position if you want a position for a suppressor as well.

Nice! What length SAR3 will they have? And any ETA on will they will be shipped?

That is pretty much what I was planning on building when you were showing us pics of the team barrels. This way I don't have to collect up all the parts

I would imagine titanium would benifet a bolt more than carrier since titanium should be a stronger steel than C-158.  As for the carrier, it would make it lighter which would increase cycling rate and decrease dwell time.  One could just buy a semi steel carrier and lighter buffer if decreased dwell is what you're looking for.
View Quote

It's lighter, but not stronger than steel, a Ti bolt wouldn't last long.  Pure Ti is too soft, alloy is too hard/brittle, and will not take the abuse like steel will, also, it will not take high heat, it has a low ignition point, high heat will set it off, it sparks up quickly, which can ignite it, a Ti muzzle device would ignite with a shot or two, the high heat and direct flame would light it off.  I have dealt with almost 30 Ti fires, all of them due to minor sparking, or high heat exposure.  High heat will also cause the Ti to draw in more oxygen, and become even harder/more brittle.  I work in the Ti industry, and do prep alloys for melting.  Ti flexes under certain forces, but the locking lugs will not take the beating when the bolt goes into battery, and it is expensive material to use.  There is also a reason Spikes carriers have a steel liner...keep the steel bolt from tearing up the Ti.

I like the idea of the steel liner, BUT neither my Progressive Machine & Tool Titanium carrier nor any of my THREE DECADES OLD aluminum carriers have worn out the bore in the carrier.

I also agree Titanium is not well suited as a AR-15 Bolt material, that is why I'm glad Spike's is offering a S7 bolt

That's pretty badass. I was looking for something like this for my lightweight build, but I am going SBR, so I might pull by muzzle device into the 10" BCM mag handguard. If I do I need something linear and light weight. Looking at the Simple Threaded Device at 2.2oz for that, unless I can find a better option.

This unit makes me rethink that. Have to look into this.

EDIT: Do you know the OAL on this unit, by chance?

2.87” long, .996” diameter 1/2x28 tpi, .276” exit hole diameter, 3.9 oz in steel 2.2 oz in Titanium.
Some of the performance is over-hyped, but it is a good brake. Your ears will bleed without ear protection though.

I personally think that the main problem with an aluminum carrier is going to be the cam pin slot and the hammer ramp on the bottom. I think it would destroy itself over time, I don't think they will hold up for very long even with hard anodized finish. Even 7075 aluminum is just to soft. It would basically be a throw away, even with the tool steel sleeve in it. I don't know if the carrier face would hold up either beating into the 8620 tool steel barrel extension over and over again. Honestly in this application I think aluminum is a very bad idea. They would be even lighter than Ti and much cheaper to produce though.

Have you considered sleeving an Al carrier, and possibly some sort of coating or inserted rail for the bottom track that the hammer rides along?

As long as it was clear in the literature that it was to be used in semi only and is a disposable item, I bet you could sell at least one production run of them.  I am sure you would torture test them in your Compressor to get a feel for how long they will last.
And not that they are great hammers, but a poly hammer would eliminate the chattering damage.  Could a steel sleeve in the front be cut for the cam track?

I'm not sure actually. I have my LMT MRP Piston gas block guncoated and it never had an issue with burning off. Also, Cerakote offers a high heat version for exhaust systems and such that would far exceed the requirements. They have some pretty awesome coatings available.

Interested in the weight and expected price point for the Ti castle nut.  I'm getting a Spikes or the V7 Weaponry version for my LW build.  Which one I purchase will be decided on those two factors (weight/cost).

This is an exciting time for the LW craving crowd and it looks like some real R&D getting done out there for LW parts.

Considering that ALUMINUM carriers are still around after three decades of being out of production and being used. I would think that Titanium will last a hell of a lot longer

AND, Tom's S7 Bolt should outlast every damn 158C or every 9310 bolt by MANY times the round count!

Our new 6AL4V Titanium carrier has some awesome features which we are in the process of getting a patent on. So I can't say much right now, but with this new carrier you don't need to use an adjustable gas system, heavier buffer, or a heavier buffer spring, even with the reduced weight. Just drop it in place and start shooting. Also our carrier has a Tool Steel sleeve inside the bore for added durability. It's done the same exact way that steel sleeves are put into Aluminum race engine blocks. They are also Hard Anodized Grey and infused with Teflon for wear resistance.

Here's the prototypes (made for our shooting team) these don't have the patented features shown. :-)

Why all the holes? I understand it makes it lighter, but isn't it already lighter than a standard BCG?

If or gonna go up to river, you go all th e way

If production weight stays the same, the V7 alloy castle nut will still be 2.1 grams lighter. Still the Spikes titanium version looks custom and hopefully can come in at a cheaper - price point.  Maybe need a new thread for LW castle nuts!

I have a few of these Ti coated heavy m16 style bcgs... they are not light but have coolness features like being gold! and the retain a good amont of oil like nickel boron ones. I can throw one of these on the scale if anyone wants to know.

Ok, it's been over a month since thread was started, anyone heard an update from spikes as to when/if they are doing pre-orders or when they will start selling?

I thought that a lighter weight BCG could result in "carrier bounce" from the slight elasticity of the BCG slamming forward and bouncing back out of battery partially, let me see if I can find the video. dang it cant

Lighter weight carriers were meant to be used with reduced gas in gamer guns. Less gas to compensate for this and to prevent over accelerating the carrier.

Tom said that this doesn't need it--I can think of a few ways to not need to reduce the gas with a lighter carrier.

You could put a restriction in the Carrier itself or open up the vent ports.

It would reduce the gas but it would be a fixed reduction.

That BCG weighs .488lbs = 7.808 oz = 221.36g
minus Bolt, cam pin, firing pin and retainer pin (60g) = 161.36g, compared to Spikes stripped carrier with key at 142g.
All of those holes and dimpling is worth 20 grams.  I would have expected a little more reduction than 2/3 of an ounce.

Ti is already a light metal, so removing a little bit of light metal means a little bit of weight reduction.

Will these bolt carriers be available in nickel boron or just the matte grey. I like NIB!!!!!!

Sent them an email with questions and went to call them today. Got a messsge to send an email............ but they havent responded yet. I was going to buy one but until i get a response from them i am going to hold off.

Is there any concern if a titanium bcg is the same demensions as the regular bcg?

It seems that spikes and boomfab have changed the carrier some

All of the critical dimensions are the same.

There have been NUMEROUS manufacturers who have modified carriers in the non-critical areas...

Colt (sear block carrier)
Spike's
J.P. Enterprises
Young's
Progressive Machine & Tool
etc.

Spikes I like your products, but I also don't want to wait forever.... Any update on yours? Or I will most likely be going with one of these.
