Does anybody know what the features are?

there is no upcoming civilian  IAR

you may be confusing it with the  901  7.62  gun

Link and/or reference?

It would be pretty nonsensical to offer a civilian IAR... it would just be a monsterously heavy semi... but it would be cool to have!

Maybe I have spoken too soon and will have to wait for the SHOT Show for more info. It will be an exclusive for XXXXXXX for $X,XXX.XX wholesale.

No, the documentation I've seen is for 5.56.

There is going to be a limited run (750) of semi auto Colt IAR 5.56 rifles built.  Soon.

I'd rather have the Colt SCW in a semi auto sbr variant.

The newest MGE Wholesale catalog is offering an IAR. From the add I saw, it looks like the model may be exclusive to them.

You mean the Infantry Automatic Rifle semi version like the one we received about an hour ago!?!?

[#10]
That's pretty damn cool!

Still kinda non-sensical, but I want one!

Don't know what I would do with it or how I would justify the cost - but "want"'s different than "buy."

Too bad it's not the FDE version.

It will be a good gun to own from a collector standpoint.  I also think quite a few guys that own M16's will buy them for the upper.

Looks like it is on an LE6920 lower? Weird.

It would make more sense if they just sold the upper for those with registered receivers.

IAR6940CK?

We can always hope.

The heat sink is pretty heavy. Basically it's a 6940 upper with a special barrel "thicker" in the chamber area (around 2" long) that the heat sink clamps to. 2 screws help hold it in place to the upper near the front.

And yes, it was on an LEO 6920 lower... Actually kind of odd.

You can see a factory FDE 6920 at the top of the 3rd picture if you are into that!

whats so weird about the 6920 lower?

if its a special run,  its a helluva lot easier to just sell the uppers you already have that have 16 inch barrels anyway, and pop them on common lowers you  already have adn not tie anything up

what is weird to me is making a smei auto version on a gun meant for full auto

but i damn sure want one,     Im thinking  bipod   nightforce scope and using it like the Mexican military i.e.  DMR role

The Mexican Marines have been using the Colt IAR for a little while now.  Could would only need to slap their current production IAR upper on some of their lowers they have laying around.

Ours struck me odd because it has the large pin FCG. Thought they had moved away from that.

Aside from collector's value I'm not sure why anyone would want this in semi...it's a heavy pig of a carbine.

There are legal open bolt semi auto MAC 10s out there.

Maybe someone will come along and clarify.  From what I have read the IAR is closed bolt on semi and open on auto.  Let finger off trigger on auto and bolt stays open.  Switch back to semi and bolt closes again.

ETA The above means a semi IAR would only fire from a closed bolt, so my post that you quoted is wrong.  Apologies.

A semi auto IAR would not be an IAR then obviously and kind of a retarded thing to have.  I kick ass with the IAR in BF3 so there's that though.

Actually the main reason for the huge heat sink is for closed bolt operation. The heat sink is there to prevent or at least cut down the possibility of cook off. Not sure why an open bolt would need the heat sink.

You might be thinking of the LWRC IAR entry. That one was the open bolt auto, closed bolt semi.

They did move away from the .170 FCGs - but this kind of "special run" may be their way of dumping them now that they've changed the standard on their regular production line.  Colt's been known to do similar things when they have remaining inventory.  Sucks that they're simply re-using the LE6920 lowers "stock" though, all the photos I've seen of the IARs have been using Norgon ambi-catches and ambi-selectors.

Agree again that as a semi it's about as useful as a tits on a bull - it wasn't even adopted by the military, so it lacks even that attraction - but damn, they're still really cool.  Would be great for someone who had a registered lower or RDIAS - or maybe even make a great LL host.

Slap a SU-230 on there and go to town!

Once more - price?

will a standard  6940 bottom rail attach to the IAR ? it kinda looks liek the  upper mono rail is wider then a 6940 in the pics

the barrel profile isnt that differnt from a 6721  profile HBAR   in that pic

The IAR lower rail will fit a 6940, but the IAR has 2 screws that go in the side that a standard 6940 does not have. Instead the standard 6940 has the swivel mounts. You should be able to see this in the pictures.

Eh, I'm not.

This is still a little too close to the M4A1 - someone in procurement had to justify the cost of all these trials and development by purchasing something "significantly different" from the Colt LSW that's been available since the sixites.  A gas-piston operation system would fit that bill.

Otherwise, some smart accountant would ask - "why didn't we just issue M4A1s COTS, or just order a HBAR M4A1?"

The modern AR market is making a pretty good case for the fact that Colt's been way ahead of the game since before Woodstock made poor hygiene cool.

Off the top of my head:

Midlength gas systems
Piston operation
LSW
Triangle handguards
"Dissaptors"

And I'm sure there's more.
