Can anyone who can do this, try it?

Load a mag with a few rounds and chamber them, and manually eject them(carefully). Then look for any deformation or damage to the bullet case or bullet tips.

Obviously do it in a safe place

I got some noticeable damage to the ELD and the Berger. Did this using a LaRue mag.

I saw an adjustment to the straw technique. Can't remember what he used but effectively it was a plastic spring shape, where the grains could be pushed like a screw or auger.

I just picked up the Area 419 funnel set it’s on sale. Great piece of hardware.

I hate fight spinners but those are pretty rad.

For 10k you  should attempt a trick long range shot dude perfect like

I ordered a sleeve off of eBay that supposedly solves the clumping issue at the end of the drop tube that leads to overcharges.  I have no skin in the game, but they can be found here:

Of all the stuff I waste money on, I just couldn’t bring myself to order some of the 419 stuff.  It’s crazy great, but I feel “bad” as I ordered another Gen II HD Vortex, so I’m “saving” money right now.

I didn’t even know the fidget thing was a thing until I saw one of the ARFCOM spinners in a post.  I ordered some and will probably be giving a couple away to a group of little birds.

As to the trick shot thing, I’ve analyzed all my shot groups and data and I’m going to call the mothership.  The rifle isn’t shooting as tight as it was, or as it should;  two shots touching and a third a MOA off.  Best to speak with the pros and see what advice they may have to offer.

Great range report and shooting!

I have a consolidated MV chart from my 260 that I’ll post below so people can see how the barrel has progressed since new.

I have the factory ELDs, and Bergers that are loaded deep into the Gorilla I could test, but I can’t do it until I get off work tonight.  Can you post pics?

Break, break…

Here’s a consolidated MV chart for the 260.  There are some anomalies, for example the May 26th Prime numbers that are not consistent with other sessions.  I’ll let you guys review it and see what you think and only comment if needed.

Tried three rounds of factory Hornady 130 ELD-M. Each round was fed from a Lancer L7, and chambered by releasing the bolt from lock-back with the bolt stop. I don't see anything abnormal.

I was hoping to be able to hit the range this morning, but because UPS decided to deliver my 130 Berger AR Hybrids at 22:00 last night, I did not have a chance to load up some test ammo for this morning. Tomorrow will be my first PRS match with the LaRue .260, and I'm hoping that afterwards, if I'm not too tired, I will be able to shoot up the Bergers.

Loaded up 35 rounds, powder charges from 41.7-42.9 in .2 increments of Reloder 16. They measure 2.184 to the ogive in 1x fired Hornady brass. Brass shoulder was bumped back to 1.621 and trimmed to 2.026. CCI 200 primers. I'll put up some photos of the test target as soon as I'm able to shoot it. It's over 110 here in Las Vegas, so I'll be looking for pressure signs due to temp even though those loads should be under max for that caliber/bullet/powder combo.

Also need to test fire the ammo I loaded in Lake City LR 308 brass necked down to 260. Lots of stuff to do this weekend.

Currently at 169 rounds down the first 22" barrel, I'm thinking after this weekend it will be close to 350 total, so I'll probably break the rifle down and clean out the barrel Sunday evening.

Those look fine, on my bergers that I chambered, the tip is deformed enough to the point I would think it would effect bullet flight.

With the ELD-Ms I saw chipping...

I took out three of the ELDs and three of the Gorilla 130 Bergers and chambered them with no issues but some very small surface scratches on the bullet body.  I repeated the test as I saw rings around the ogive as if there was contact with the lands.  The first and second pictures shows surface scratching but no deformations and the third is the round after two chamberings where you can see the ring on the bullet.

Break, break...

I received my TBR today and installed it on the tOBR.  I bought the 8.25" version and it just fit to the last rail section.  Lew at TBR actually recommends the long version for the tOBR but the 8.25 does fit. I used it to catch the rounds (above) with no issues although the design of the upper has the TBR extending out just a tad further than I suspect was designed.  The front "stop" is the culprit contacting the upper and leaving just a smidge of a gap back at the deflector.  I'm sure it will work just find and will give it a try this weekend (hopefully).

Getting close to 10,000 and I have no good ideas so I might just blow by and say sayonara to 10K.

@D3

Make sure you rotate this little tab. That should allow the catcher to fit flush against the receiver. Took me a while to figure that out. Just lift the front part of the tab (closest to the muzzle) off the nut and rotate it 180 degrees.

Don't know if that will fix your problem on the tOBR, but it fixed it on my pTAR.

I cycled some more rounds and this time they came out fine. Super strange that I cycled several rounds right in a row and they were damaged, I'll have to watch for it to happen.

I'm going to go send some rounds tomorrow as long as it isn't 120 again.

Just thinking out loud early in the morning, but the feed angle of the LaRue mags isn't severe as if the round is striking the top of the extension and being forced into the chamber by the bolt.  If you look at my pictures where there were surface scratches, I assume those were from the chambering process indicating that area of the bullet is making contact during chambering, which is far from the tip of the round.

You said the ELDs were chipping which sort of rules out any flattening from being in the mags. Is there any issue where the extension meets the receiver?  Take a look at the picture of my 260.  You can see the transition between the receiver and extension and where the anodizing on the receiver is wearing from contact as a round is chambered.  I assume that wear is the place the bullet body is making contact and causing the surface scratching, but it could just as easily be contact from the tip of the round. I would also suspect that if anything is happening to your tips, it's happening there at the extension so take a close look and see if it tells you anything.

I'll play around with some dummy rounds when I have a chance to see if my tips are making contact, but even if they were at that point on the receiver, I would think it would be a flattening of the round, not a chip.

D3 that is good info. I inspected the extension area when I noticed. I am wondering if some of these rounds were previously handled. The boxes looked to have been on a shelf at a gun store with people opening them.

Not sure if they were dropped or what but the tips on the ELD were easily chipped. I grabbed a new box and hand cycled all 20 of them, and ejected them on to carpet, no damage from this box. Also, I did not see any other markings or issue.

With the Berger/Gorilla combo I saw some tip deformation on the two rounds I tried after the ELDs.

Looks like a high of 115 degrees today, not sure I am gonna shoot in that, but who knows

Okay, I'm back from a short range trip that turned into three hours when I spent about an hour and a half discussing the 260 and LabRadar with the folks on the line.

Let's start with dinner.  Being officially old now, the wife and I have pretty much dropped bread from the burger menu and just go nekid!  Unofficial dinner pic included.

On the technical side, I decided to do the McDonalds straw hack for the Chargemaster. You simply cut a McDonalds straw to about an inch and shove it in the drop tube to stop the clumping that causes overthrows.  If you really want to overachieve, you splay the straw.    And of course, when I got home from the range my insert arrived so out with the straw, a single pass with Teflon tape and it slides right in and you're in business.

On the range side of this post, we have "Is it live or is it Memorex?"  Which group was the bolt gun and which gun was the L260 with TQ?

As a report on the Tactical Brass Catcher, I used it exclusively with the L260 and probably fired 60 rounds with no issues, no weight issues and I really didn't even know it was attached.  Not having to scurry around picking up brass was kind of nice!

Took the 260 out 200-800 yards again in about a 20 mph crosswind and it only took a touch over 1.5 mils hold to hit the 800. The 223's were having to hold 3.5 mils at 500. Only missed a couple shots in those intense wind conditions. Can't wait to really stretch its legs to 1000+

Range report:  I was able to get another 49 rounds down range today.  2 boxes of Hornady ELD-M and a partial box of prime (9 rounds).  Unfortunately I did not realize an NRA match was going to be going on, and was able to only get a permanent bench spot; disappointing as I prefer to shot prone.

Rifle performed great as expected, but there were time where I did not do my part.  The Hornady rounds did have cratering on the primer like the Prime.  I ran a sets of 5-shot groups at 100yds x4, 5-shot groups at 200yds, and a 9-shot group at 100yds.  Was not my best shooting as I had a couple fliers, I'm in particularly proud of the upper right 5-shot group at 100yds.

All taken from a benchtop while seated, bipod, rear bag, and Vortex Razor HD Gen II.

So is the general consensus Hornady 130gr ELD-M factory loads are the best bang for your buck right now?

I'm a little late on the range report from yesterday having so many chores to knock out once I got home.  Same ROE as before - 0715 arrival at R4 at Quantico to place targets - then back to the 800 yard line to drop gear for the first phase.  I was shooting the M5 and L260 and started with the M5 and the H130 to validate the range card.  It was actually a bit faster than the range card (probably temp) so I came down 3/4MOA.  We had a 3-5MPH cross wind so I started at L7, but as we continued the wind picked up to 5-10MPH with a headwind at the line and a 9 o'clock crosswind at the target line.  The M5 shot well and it was simply an exercise in wind as elevation was spot on.

I was also using the LabRadar to chrono some rounds, including a group of Lapua and Barnes hand loads.  I found the M5 really liked 42grs of H4350 with both projectiles so I shot some test loads on Saturday at 0.02 off the lands, which did not shot as well as ones seated at 0.03-0.04 off the lands. So, I loaded up 20 of each and took them out to test.  I'll say the Lapuas performed better at range, but the Barnes were right there with them, I just need to tweak the load a bit.

I shot the L260 at 800 yards and again, it was an exercise in wind vs elevation.  The range card was within 1/2MOA so it was two three round strings and I was on target.  I shot both unsuppressed and suppressed and collected more data.    I got sidetracked, as I always seem to do, with people interrupting to discuss the LabRadar, the L260, and to again get stuck calling shots for the inept.  Yes, I'm pissed as I lost about 2hrs of range time dicking around with folks that shouldn't have been on the line considering their skills and equipment.  Note to self, don't bring shit except a gun, ammo and a bottle of water and people leave you alone!  [/rant off]  I didn't get a chance to shoot the L260 at 1000 but I have all summer to get the rifle out to Quantico and will probably be out almost every weekend.

Looking from 1000 to the 800 yard line.

Setup at 800; a few more shooters than usual as it was a couple of weeks since the range was open.

Safety brief.

Guy next to me shooting a 338Lapua across my firing line (I was on 30 and he was shooting 25 - see note above).  @freakinout for the ass picture.

The L260 with TQ at 800 and getting blasted by that 338's muzzle brake.

Here's the L260's steel at 800 (with TQ) and shooting three-shot strings.  I fired the bottom right with two hits, then dialed in a 1/4MOA left for the hits at the center bottom.  I dialed in a 1/2MOA up and shot the center left, then another 1/4MOA with a slightly high hold for the top three. These were shot with Hornady 130 ELD-Ms.

Here's a three-shot string from the M5 using the Lapua 139 hand loads.  I only shot one paper target for the day and here it is - elevation is spot on at 800 but that darn wind!

Here's the M5 steel (2/3 IPSC) from 1000 - elevation is right on, but that darn wind!  Hornady 130s, what a consistent round.

I'll give my weekend update too, as I had lots of issues and frustrations. I went out Friday afternoon to test my Berger 130 AR Hybrid loads in 1x Hornady brass and my 140 Nosler CC loads that I made using necked-down .308 brass. My results were less than spectacular. The Berger loads were all over 1MOA, some getting close to 2MOA. Frustrated, I ran a few rounds of Hornady 130 ELD-M factory ammo through the gun, and it shot like garbage too. I was puzzled, because the Hornady ammo had consistently been 1/2" at 100 yards prior to that session. I pulled out a KAC SR-25 I had with me a put 3 rounds into .286" just to make sure that I didn't suddenly forget how to pull a trigger. Frustrated, I packed my stuff up and went home.

At that point I had 209 rounds down the tube, so I took the gun apart and cleaned the barrel pretty thoroughly. While cleaning it I remembered that I had installed a H3 buffer in it since the last range session, so I am unsure if that had any impact in my huge loss of accuracy. With the gun shooting well over 1MOA at that point I was a little stressed out since I had a precision rifle match on Saturday morning at 07:30. I cleaned the gun, reinstalled the factory H2 buffer, and packed all my gear for the following day. I also packed a SR-25 in .308 just in case....

I arrived at the range at 06:00 in order to put a few rounds through the tube to see if cleaning it out and/or going back to the H2 buffer brought the rifle back in line with how it should be shooting. Sure enough, the rifle went back to putting the factory ELD-M into nice little 1/2MOA groups. I also shot another series of Berger loads, and they looked a lot better than they did the day before, but they still aren't where I want them. 42.9gr of Reloder 16 put me right at 2820fps with an SD of 10 and they hovered around 3/4". I'm hoping I can tighten that up just a tad once I play with seating depth.

I shot the match with the LaRue, and I ended up taking 5th. I made a few mental mistakes and had one gear issue that kept me out of the top 3, which is what I was hoping for. The rifle shot well though, and I'm very excited to run it again next weekend at our yearly night PRS match. There are multiple advantages to running a gasser in PRS-type matches, and the LaRue .260 sure kicks the shit out of my .308 gas guns that I'm used to running. I'll be engaging targets out to 1700+ yards, so I'm really hoping I can nail down a load with the Berger 130 AR Hybrids, as they outperform every other 130-class bullet significantly out at distance. I did decide after shooting the match Saturday morning that I'll be ordering a TriggerTech "Adaptable" 2-stage trigger with the flat trigger shoe. I really like their triggers, and have them in both of my match bolt guns. Nothing against the LaRue trigger, but it's hard to run a 4.5lb trigger when you're used to shooting triggers in the 1.5-2lb range.

No pictures from the weekend, my normal shooting/photography buddy didn't make it out to the range with me, but he should be out snapping photos and taking video next weekend. I'll update again later this week on how the Bergers are doing. I also loaded a set of ammo using IMR 4451, which I've had great success in using for my 6.5Creedmoor bolt gun.

Buffer weight made that much difference? Shouldn't the bullet be long gone before the bolt unlocks?

At the price point, I would say yes.

Just ordered some Prime 130 OTM, almost 30 seconds elapsed and I had a call from Jim the owner of Prime. Its 10:30pm here, pretty cool that he does that. I will shoot him a message in the am.

Same boat.  Won't start reloading for the 260 until fall.  Between work and too much stuff to do during the limited summer months, I'll pay the premium for high quality factory ammo.

Don't judge them until you get about 40 down the tube to season the barrel.

Over / Under when we see D3 post again in this thread since it's number 10,000?  I'm saying we won't hear from him again until Friday late afternoon; but you know he is lurking.

I'm working up some loads with them now for my 260 bolt gun, word is they like a jump of .060 or more. I am working up loads at .050 and up currently, I'll know more this weekend.

I hope they shoot because they are cheap for being a high bc bullet and they are readily available for the most part. I have a box of 500, I'll stock up on them if they perform as good or better than the 140 Hybrids.

I picked up two boxes of 100 because they were priced pretty well.

My old go to 130gr 6.5 round is over $.40 a bullet but has a BC over .6 as well. That's gonna hurt picking up a case or two of 500.

I'm not sure if it was the buffer or the clean barrel that made a difference. I may throw the H3 back in at a later date.
